Stratified distributional analysis: A novel perspective on RT distributions

We present a novel statistical methodology called Stratified Distributional Analysis (SDA) to quantitatively assess how key determinants of response times (word frequency and length) shape their distributions. Taking advantage of the availability of millions of lexical decision response times in the English Lexicon Project and the British Lexicon Project, we made important advances into the theoretical issue of linking response times and word frequency by analysing RT distributions as a function of word frequency and word length. We tested these distributions against the lognormal, Wald, and Gamma distributions and three measures of word occurrence (word form frequencies obtained from subtitles and contextual diversity as operationalized as discourse contextual diversity and user contextual diversity). We found that the RT distributions were best described by a lnorm distribution across both megastudies when word occurrence was quantified by a contextual diversity measure. The link between the lnorm distribution and its generative process highlights the power of SDA in elucidating mechanisms that govern the generation of RTs through the fitting of probability distributions. Using a hierarchical Bayesian framework, SDA yielded posterior distributions for the distributional parameters at the single-participant level, enabling probabilistic predictions of response times as a function of word frequency and word length, which has the potential to serve as a diagnostic tool to uncover idiosyncratic features of word processing. Crucially, while we applied our parsimonious methodology to lexical decision response times, it is applicable to a variety of tasks such as word-naming and eye-tracking data.17 p
Practicing theory building in a many modelers hackathon: A proof of concept

The best theories motivate us to search for discoveries, guide us towards successful interventions, and help us to explain and organize knowledge. Such theories require a high degree of specificity, which in turn requires formal modeling. Yet, in psychological science, many theories are not precise and psychological scientists often lack the technical skills to formally specify existing theories. This problem raises the question: How can we promote formal theory development in psychology, where there are many content experts but few modelers? In this paper, we discuss one strategy for addressing this issue: a Many Modelers approach. Many Modelers consists of mixed teams of modelers and non-modelers that collaborate to create a formal theory of a phenomenon. Here, we report a proof of concept of this approach, which we piloted as a three-hour hackathon at the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science conference in 2021. After surveying the participants, results suggest that (a) psychologists who have never developed a formal model can become (more) excited about formal modeling + and theorizing; (b) a division of labor in formal theorizing is possible where only one or a few team members possess the prerequisite modeling expertise; and (c) first working prototypes of a theoretical model can be created in a short period of time. These results show some promise for the many modelers approach as a team science tool for theory development.19 p
Biallelic variants in GTF3C3 result in an autosomal recessive disorder with intellectual disability.

315753.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: This study details a novel syndromic form of autosomal recessive intellectual disability resulting from recessive variants in GTF3C3, encoding a key component of the DNA-binding transcription factor IIIC, which has a conserved role in RNA polymerase III-mediated transcription. METHODS: Exome sequencing, minigene analysis, molecular modeling, RNA polymerase III reporter gene assays, and Drosophila knockdown models were utilized to characterize GTF3C3 variants. RESULTS: Twelve affected individuals from 7 unrelated families were identified with homozygous or compound heterozygous missense variants in GTF3C3 including c.503C>T p.(Ala168Val), c.1268T>C p.(Leu423Pro), c.1436A>G p.(Tyr479Cys), c.2419C>T p.(Arg807Cys), and c.2420G>A p.(Arg807His). The cohort presented with intellectual disability, variable nonfamilial facial features, motor impairments, seizures, and cerebellar/corpus callosum malformations. Consistent with disruptions in intra- and intermolecular interactions observed in molecular modeling, RNA polymerase III reporter assays confirmed that the majority of missense variants resulted in a loss of function. Minigene analysis of the recurrent c.503C>T p.(Ala168Val) variant confirmed the introduction of a cryptic donor site into exon 4, resulting in mRNA missplicing. Consistent with the clinical features of this cohort, neuronal loss of Gtf3c3 in Drosophila induced seizure-like behavior, motor impairment, and learning deficits. CONCLUSION: These findings confirm that GTF3C3 variants result in an autosomal recessive form of syndromic intellectual disability.01 januari 202

The decline of coastal neighborhoods occurs due to not only coastal hazards but also the lack of adaption from the property market. Urban planners and policymakers must thus conceptually and practically understand how to prevent the decline of coastal neighborhoods. However, although the idea of property-based neighborhood change and decline is conceptually well established, it remains unclear how the property market demonstrates the process of neighborhood decline in practice. Thus, this study aims to answer the following research question: To what extent do property markets demonstrate a process of decline in coastal neighborhoods? This study argues that the property market’s response to coastal flood risk can reflect the process of declining coastal neighborhoods in practice.
