Perceptions on mental health and depression by adolescents, a systematic review of qualitative studies

Contains fulltext : 325325.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Background: Mental health issues are on the rise, affecting one in seven adolescents. Depression stands out as the most prevalent mood disorder. Enhancing our understanding of adolescent’ perspectives on mental health can improve prevention and promotion efforts. Reviews on mental health of adolescents mainly relied on studies with questionnaires and diagnostic tools. This qualitative systematic review aims to give an overview of the perspectives on mental health expressed by adolescents aged 13-23 in high-income countries on mental health and depression. Method: We searched in Pubmed and Psychinfo databases using terms including synonyms of adolescent, mental health or depression, perspectives and qualitative methods. A total of 34,074 records were screened for eligibility. Included articles were thematically analyzed in three stages: open coding, development of 'descriptive themes' and the generation of 'analytical themes'. Results: We found 74 articles eligible for the synthesis and identified five themes: (1) Importance of maintaining balance for positive mental health, (2) Need for connection with oneself and others to cope with daily stressors, (3) Personal responsibility for their mental health, (4) Mental (un)health is perceived as a continuum, (5) Losing control is key for depression. Conclusion: This review provides a comprehensive exploration of the literature on adolescent’ perceptions on mental health and depression. Mental health issues are perceived as personal failure. Adolescents shoulder responsibility for their own mental health, while simultaneously expressing the need for social support. Recognizing adolescents’ active role presents opportunities for empowering interventions and support, it also amplifies the perceived burden of responsibility making them susceptible to depression. Our results suggest the need for systemic and collective interventions rather than solely individual-focused interventions. It is necessary to further study adolescents' perceptions of mental health and depression, to promote their mental health, prevent mental health problems and stimulate seeking (professional) help when in need.21 p

Moral Constraints, Social Norm Enforcement and Strategic Default in Weak and Strong Economic Conditions

Contains fulltext : 321310.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)We study the behavioral mechanisms which contribute to increased strategic defaults during an economic crisis. In our laboratory experiment, subjects can default on an outstanding loan, but moral constraints and social norm enforcement may provide incentives to repay. We exogenously vary the state of the economy: In the weak economy, more borrowers are forced to default than in the strong. We identify two main effects of weak economic conditions: First, moral constraints are softened: Solvent debtors default more often. Second, under informational uncertainty about the reason for default, social norm enforcement is undermined: Peers are more reluctant to sanction defaulters.40 p

The effects of low-dose colchicine on the progression of aortic valve stenosis: Rationale, design, and baseline characteristics of the Colchicine and Inflammation in Aortic Stenosis (CHIANTI) trial.

    No full text
Contains fulltext : 322518.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Aortic valve stenosis (AS) is one of the most common valvular heart diseases worldwide. Its prevalence increases with age and is expected to rise further as the population ages. Untreated severe AS carries a 2-year mortality rate exceeding 50%. Furthermore, surveillance and management of AS impose a significant burden on healthcare systems. Therefore, effective pharmacological strategies are urgently needed to slow or halt the progression of AS. RATIONALE AND DESIGN: Inflammation plays a central role in the pathogenesis of both atherosclerosis and AS. Anti-inflammatory therapy with low-dose colchicine reduces cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease, but its efficacy has not been tested in AS. Colchicine and Inflammation in Aortic Stenosis (CHIANTI) is an investigator-initiated, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicenter, randomized trial involving 150 patients with moderate AS. After confirming tolerance during a two-week run-in phase, eligible participants underwent coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography, (18)F-sodium fluoride ((18)F-NaF) positron emission tomography (PET)-CT, and echocardiography. Thereafter, participants were randomized 1:1 to colchicine 0.5 mg once daily or a matching placebo. All baseline imaging is repeated after 24 months. The primary endpoint is the change in aortic valve calcium score on CT. Secondary endpoints are (1) the change in aortic valve (18)F-NaF uptake on PET-CT and corrected for target-to-background ratio, and (2) the change in peak aortic jet velocity on echocardiography. CONCLUSION: The CHIANTI trial evaluates whether anti-inflammatory therapy with low-dose colchicine can slow or halt the progression of moderate AS. If successful, it would offer the first effective pharmacological treatment for AS.
