BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: TIMOTHY MO'S SOUR SWEET
Get PDFTimothy Mo is an Anglochinese writer who writes much about the experiences that immigrants face in their new country, and how they overcome the problems and culture shocks that come up, as well as how they define their identity. In his novel, Sour Sweet, Mo describes how three characters who come from Hong Kong, Chen, Lily, and Mui, with their all character traits live their lives in the United Kingdom. This paper discusses how the three characters respond to their new environment. Because of different character traits and ability to cope with changes, they respond to the culture and society of the UK differently. There is one who holds the old culture tightly without trying to understand the new culture in the new place, there is one who rejects the old culture and adapts the life in the UK in an uncritical manner, yet there is one who tries to find the equilibrium between the old and the new. By showing the flexibility towards the changes and the influence of foreign culture, Mo emphasizes in the need of accommodative attitude and tolerance towards the multicultural reality in this modern world

Get PDFDespite the increasing research in second language acquisition, a gap seems to exist between researchers' technical knowledge and teachers' practical knowledge. This is evident from a review of research studies in form-focused instruction summarized in this article. Additional review of articles in the teaching of writing also leads to a similar conclusion. The theoretical development of the writing process does not seem to provide many insights for teachers to apply the process approach to the teaching of writing. The results of the two reviews then indicate that an attempt is required to relate second language research to teaching. Theoretical-pedagogical research, action research, and participatory research are referred to as models of research that can bridge the gap. Get PDFIn this study, I investigate cross-linguistic differences and similarities in the speech associated gesture in the NS (Native Speaker) - NS and NNS (Nonnative Speaker) - NS dyads when they are telling a narrative. The gesture production between Indonesian native speakers when communicating in Indonesian (L1) and in English (L2) was coded and assessed based on Mc.Neill's model of overall gesture units. The Indonesian speakers' gesture modification when interacting in English was measured by the size of the gestures. The results indicate that Indonesian native speakers gesture more when they communicate in English and modify their gestures by making them bigger and therefore more noticeable to their interlocutors. Well's Ann Veronica structurally seems to be divided into two parts; the first deals with Ann Veronica's struggle to get equality with men and freedom in most aspects of life, such as in politics, economics, education, and sexuality; the second describes much the other side of her individuality which she cannot deny, namely her femininity, such as her crave for love, marriage, maternity, and beauty. H.G. Wells describes vividly the two elements in Ann Veronica, feminism and femininity. As a feminist, Ann Veronica rebelled against her authoritative Victorian father, who regarded women only as men's property to be protected from the harsh world outside. On the other side, Ann could not deny her being a woman after she fell in love with Capes. Her femininity from the second half of the novel then is explored. Although the novel ends with the depiction of the domestic life of Ann Veronica, it does not mean that the feminism is gone altogether. The key point is that the family life Ann chooses as a `submissive' wife and good mother is her choice. It is very different if it is forced on her to do. Thus, this novel depicts both sides of Ann Veronica, her feminism and her femininity
