Leveraging digital technologies and machine learning for climate resilient buildings: modelling the role of dynamic drivers in mitigating critical barriers
Purpose
Digital technologies (DT) and machine learning (ML) offer significant opportunities for the construction industry (CI), particularly in climate resilience (CR) assessment. Despite these potential opportunities, the adoption level of DT and ML remains low in many regions due to the perceived barriers. This study aims to address a critical knowledge gap by investigating the dynamic and dual impact of current drivers on direct adoption and their indirect influence through the mitigation of key barriers towards climate-resilient buildings.
Design/methodology/approach
The current study adopted a mixed-method approach. Through an expert survey involving 97 construction practitioners, the partial least squares structural equation modelling method was utilised to explore and validate the proposed model.
Findings
Findings confirmed a substantial impact (ß = 0.723, p < 0.000) of the current drivers on the adoption of DT and ML for CR. Additionally, the model demonstrated that the current drivers have a significant positive indirect impact (ß = 0.573, p < 0.000) on adoption by mitigating the critical barriers. This feedback loop suggests the importance of focusing on drivers with dual impact. The analysis indicated that remote sensing applications have the greatest potential for achieving CR. While Building Information Modelling and Digital Twins are significant, their impacts on CR are limited. Interestingly, lack of standardisation is identified as the most critical barrier, as it influences governmental support, which is a primary determinant of adoption.
Originality/value
This study makes a crucial contribution to CR objectives in the CI and identifies the existing gaps in Internet of Things integration for achieving CR.</p

Non-interventionism meets oligopolies: a bad day for the UK’s poorer regions
Non-interventionist attempts to solve the UK’s regional problem have been unsuccessful for 30 years. This article argues that the approach to regional development set out in The UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy is a continuation of this non-interventionism and that it too is unlikely to help the UK’s poorer regions, just like a similar approach has not worked in Germany. This is because it does not take into account the power of large, oligopolistic firms. The article sets out an Alternative Industrial Strategy approach, based on the understanding that, in order to reduce regional disparities, the of these firms needs to be tackled.</p
Geospatial distribution of tuberculosis incidence and determinants of tuberculosis treatment outcomes in Nzema East Municipality, Ghana
Background: Ghana has seen a notable rise in tuberculosis (TB) cases with mired treatment outcomes. However, evidence suggests disparities in the incidence of TB and its treatment outcomes across the country. Nzema East Municipality specifically reported a 62.34% increase in TB incidence in 2023 compared to 2022. The study, therefore, aims to determine the geospatial distribution of TB incidence and predictors of TB treatment outcomes in Nzema East Municipality.Methods: The study used a retrospective cohort with a quantitative approach, utilising health records of 545 TB cases from 2018 to 2023 in Nzema East. Data were processed with Microsoft Excel and analysed using ArcGIS Pro version 3.3.2, Joinpoint Regression Programme 5.2.0 and STATA MP version 17.Results: The Moran's index was 0.03 (p Conclusion: TB incidence in Nzema East was spatially dependent, with statistically significant higher incidence in the highly populated and mining communities. The overall successful treatment outcome is suboptimal, which demands targeted intervention to mitigate these menaces.</p
Exploring the value of near-miss reporting for construction safety
The construction industry is pivotal in driving economic growth and development by transforming conceptual designs into infrastructure such as buildings, roads, and bridges, while generating employment and stimulating various economic sectors. However, the industry is fraught with numerous safety hazards, resulting in injuries, fatalities, and property damage. To address these challenges, effective safety management systems are crucial, with Near-Miss Reporting (NMR) emerging as a proactive approach to hazard identification and prevention. Near-miss incidents, which could have led to harm but were averted, provide critical insights into potential dangers, thereby fostering a safety culture and enabling corrective actions.It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that Near-miss Reporting (NMR) is a common feature of contemporary safety management systems across all industries, including civil engineering and construction. Often considered a leading indicator, and thus evidence of a pro-active approach to safety, companies across the world have eagerly adopted or developed NMR systems and processes for use within their operations, looking to capture near-miss (NM) knowledge and place mitigations in place to avoid any reoccurrence with potentially more serious consequences. However, research has shown there can be problems inherent in NMR, and it can be suggested that any impact on practice has yet to be fully realized.This research investigates the effectiveness, benefits, challenges, and best practices of NMR in UK construction safety. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, the study combines quantitative analysis of data collected from UK civil engineering companies recognized for their exceptional health and safety practices across 27 construction sites and surveys from safety managers, supervisors, and stakeholders, with qualitative insights from review of literature. These companies operate an advanced online NMR system, offering a rich dataset for analysis.This study adopted factor analysis and logistic regression in assessing the value of near-miss incidents in improving safety outcomes. Key objectives include examining existing knowledge about NMR in the UK construction setting, investigating factors influencing workers' willingness to report near-misses, assessing barriers to establishing efficient NMR systems, and identifying successful methods to encourage a proactive safety culture using near-miss data.Analysis revealed issues around labeling and nomenclature, the questions asked to those reporting, and the value generated by the system from the data. This was also evidenced by the lack of 'close out' of any learning generated within it.Factor analysis was adopted to explore the factors contributing to the value of near-miss reporting within the context of the UK construction industry. Towards a model urban design assessment in Aotearoa New Zealand
Urban design assessments are becoming more pivotal in planning across Aotearoa New Zealand, as applicants and local authorities utilise them to communicate the quality of spaces between buildings in medium and high-density developments. Applicants commission private sector urban design consultants to prepare these assessments and councils engage separate urban designers to review them, positioning urban design assessments as a fundamental medium for the urban design sector. However, the existing literature does not contain sufficient guidance for how these documents are to be structured and international guidance operates in distinct statutory planning environments. Therefore, this article presents evidence of the current industry model for urban design assessments across five cities in Aotearoa New Zealand and comments on how further guidance regarding forming a model document structure may benefit the sector. It follows the recent establishment of the Urban Designers Institute Aotearoa that seeks to establish educational and professional standards for urban designers in the country.</p

Circular economy platforms: a systematic review
Digital platforms enable circular business models that can provide both economic and environmental benefits. However, the literature on platforms in the context of the circular economy has remained descriptive and fragmented across fields, posing challenges for synthesizing accumulated knowledge. This systematic review of 134 articles (2016–2025) describes the current state of circular economy–oriented platform research (conceptualized here as “CE platform” research) in the field of business and management. It identifies six key themes: (1) platform-related consumer behavior, (2) platform strategies, (3) platform-enabled systems, (4) environmental impacts of platforms, (5) platform-based supply chains, and (6) circular business models. Based on our analysis of the literature, we have a research agenda that outlines four key areas (conceptual frameworks, research designs, theoretical perspectives, and new themes) and suggests research questions that lay a foundation for future inquiry. The study contributes to CE-oriented platform research, consolidating diverse insights that support theory development by providing an actionable direction in this rapidly evolving field.</p
