    Redeveloping expertise in the transition from coach to coach education tutor

    The role of the tutor in delivering formal coach education is critical in understanding the professional preparation of sport coaches. The recruitment, development, and retention of tutors with expertise is crucial to organisational success and has personal and professional implications for career transitions in coaching. This study focuses on teaching and learning experiences during the initial tutor training of novice coach education tutors from a national sport governing body in the United Kingdom. Grenier and Kehrhahn’s Model of Expertise Redevelopment is utilised as a theoretical tool to aid understanding of the transition from coaching to tutoring. Data were collected through document analysis, observations during and after initial tutor training and subsequent live delivery of courses, and follow-up semistructured interviews with nine tutors. The themes highlighted the need to acquire specific knowledge of the content, the role of others in the development of expertise, the use of situated learning as a catalyst for redevelopment, and the eagerness to establish their future learning pathway. The findings suggest that each territory of expertise (i.e., content, constituency and environment) did not remain stable when transitioning to the new domain of coach education tutoring and implications for future tutor training are provided.</p

    Booster effect of inactivated <i>Parapoxvirus ovis</i> on EHV‐1 neutralising antibodies when co‐injected with equine herpesvirus 1/4 vaccine

    Background: Equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is regularly responsible for outbreaks in many parts of the world, with a significant impact on the equine industry. Protection against EHV-1 relies on sanitary measures including vaccination, but the efficacy and duration of protection offered by existing vaccines is often limited and vaccines do not show protection against all forms of the disease. Objectives: The aim of this study is to improve the vaccine efficacy and the benefit of immune stimulation with inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO1), a substance already marketed as an immunostimulant. Study design: Experimental challenge. Methods: Antibody response was measured after a semi-annual boost of EHV-1/-4 vaccine with or without iPPVO added. Carbopol-adjuvanted inactivated EHV-1/-4 vaccine was administered alone (n = 9) or combined with iPPVO injections at D0, D2 and D4 after vaccination (n = 10) to adult horses as a booster vaccination (i.e., 6 months after the last immunisation). EHV-1 neutralising antibody titres were measured by classical serum neutralisation and by a real-time neutralising assay 1, 3 and 6 months after vaccination. Results: The results showed that iPPVO was safe and the horses had higher antibody levels than the control group injected with EHV-1/-4 vaccine alone. In contrast to horses that received the vaccine alone, antibody titres increased or were at least maintained up to 3 months after immunisation in horses that received the vaccine plus iPPVO. Main limitations: It should be noted that in this experimental protocol, iPPVO was not mixed and co-injected with the vaccine, but administered near the injection site of the vaccine. Conclusions iPPVO could be used to improve vaccination protocols against EHV-1 in horses.     Energy storage systems impact on Egypt's future energy mix with high renewable energy penetration: A long-term analysis

    High renewable energy penetration targets cannot be achieved without more reliance on energy storage technologies. This study provides a long-term techno-economic analysis for the energy mix of Egypt until 2050. That is with considering various types of energy storage including pumped hydropower, electro-chemical (Redox flow battery) and (Li-Ion battery), and hydrogen energy. Since 80 % renewable energy generation from all primary energy sources was targeted by 2050, six different scenarios were studied by using the PLEXOS energy model. The results showed that the capacity of pumped storage hydropower (PSHP) is expected to reach 21.0 GW, contributing to almost 3.7 % from total energy supply by 2050. The electrolyzers' capacity for Hydrogen Energy Storage System (HESS) is expected to reach 15.0 GW, producing 20.69 TWh of Hydrogen energy by 2050. Besides that, the Levelized Cost of Energy storage (LCOS) of (PSHP) is expected to reach 189.8 (US/MWh)comparedwith60.83(US/MWh) compared with 60.83 (US/MWh) in case of (HESS) by 2050. On the other hand, it is anticipated that the capacity of both redox flow and Lithium-Ion batteries will be 5.1 GW and 3.0 GW, respectively by 2050.</p

    “The non-combatant on the ‘front line’: British servicewomen during the Troubles in Northern Ireland”

    Critical scholarship recognises women’s longstanding but unacknowledged presence on the “front line” but tends to explore what it means for the individual rather than why the military institution is invested in this myth. This paper draws on 20 interviews with female veterans of the Troubles and extensive archival material. It examines how servicewomen’s war labour was controlled by the British Army, by policy that kept them unarmed and wearing skirts, labelled as “non-combatants.” Building on scholarly recognition of women’s unacknowledged presence in “front line combat,” this paper considers the implications of control over servicewomen for how we understand military power.</p

    Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    Purpose of Review: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common inherited cardiac condition with potential for severe complications including sudden cardiac death. Early diagnosis allows appropriate risk stratification and prompt intervention to minimise the potential for adverse outcomes. The implications of poorly coordinated screening are significant, either missing relatives at high-risk or burdening low-risk individuals with a diagnosis associated with reduced life expectancy. We aim to guide clinicians through the diagnostic pathway through to novel treatment options. Several conditions mimic the condition, and we discuss the phenocopies and how to differentiate from HCM. Recent Findings: We summarise the latest developments informing clinical decision making in the modern era of myosin inhibitors and future gene editing therapies. Early identification will enable prompt referral to specialist centres. Summary: A diagnostic flowchart is included, to guide the general cardiology and heart failure clinician in important decision making regarding the care of the HCM patient and importantly their relatives at risk. We have highlighted the importance of screening because genotype-positive/phenotype-negative patients are likely to have the most to gain from novel therapies.</p

    Role of GP trainees in improving patient care

    GP training in the UK is associated with improved patient outcomes and high GP trainee satisfaction with their training experience. These positives contrast with the degree of unhappiness expressed by junior doctors (and reflected in their recent campaign for better terms and conditions of work), and recent challenges to assessment processes by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). It is often acknowledged that GP training produces better patient care in training practices. However, the role of GP trainees in improved patient outcomes is rarely considered. In this article we review the current empirical evidence (such as it is) and discuss the potential contribution of GP trainees to patient care.</p

    Antibiotic Eluting Bone Void Filler Versus Systemic Antibiotics For Pedal Osteomyelitis

    Osteomyelitis complicates 20% of patients with infected diabetic foot ulcers. In this study, 2 strategies for treating pedal osteomyelitis were compared in a pilot study. This was a retrospective, non-randomized, single center 2 arm cohort study, conducted between 2020 and 2022 involving 53 patients at a tertiary limb salvage unit. All patients were managed with debridement and proximal bone biopsy. Group A was treated with systemic antibiotics for up to 6 weeks. Group B had vancomycin or gentamycin eluting bone void filler implanted into the diseased bone medullary cavity(s) and 1 week of oral antibiotics. Patients were followed independently for the primary endpoint of osteomyelitis treatment failure and secondary endpoints of amputation free survival, wound healing, minor amputation, and treatment-limiting side-effects. Survival analysis demonstrated no significant difference in treatment failure (p = .35) or amputation free survival (p = .46). Limb salvage rates were 88% in Group A and 89% in Group B. Wounds healed in 85% in Group A and 89% in Group B. Minor amputations occurred in 21% in Group A and 11% in Group B. Treatment limiting side effects occurred in 6% in Group A and were absent in Group B. In conclusion, the use of antibiotic eluting bone void filler appeared safe without extended systemic antibiotics in this study. Group B had fewer intravenous lines, requirement for home nursing, and treatment limiting side effects. A larger randomized controlled trial examining longer term clinical and radiological efficacy, treatment costs and side effects is warranted.</p

    Latent Structure-Aware View Recovery for Incomplete Multi-View Clustering

    Incomplete multi-view clustering (IMVC) presents a significant challenge  due to the need for effectively exploring complementary and consistent  information within the context of missing views. One promising strategy  to tackle this challenge is to recover missing views by inferring the  missing samples. However, such approaches often fail to fully utilize  discriminative structural information or adequately address consistency,  as it requires such information to be known or learnable in advance,  which contradicts the incomplete data setting. In this study, we propose  a novel approach called Latent Structure-Aware view recovery (LaSA) for  the IMVC task. Our objective is to recover missing views through  discriminative latent representations by leveraging structural  information. Specifically, our method offers a unified closed-form  formulation that simultaneously performs missing data inference and  latent representation learning, using a learned intrinsic graph as  structural information. This formulation, incorporating graph structure  information, enhances the inference of missing data while facilitating  discriminative feature learning. Even when intrinsic graph is initially  unknown due to incomplete data, our formulation allows for effective  view recovery and intrinsic graph learning through an iterative  optimization process. To further enhance performance, we introduce an  iterative consistency diffusion process, which effectively leverages the  consistency and complementary information across multiple views.  Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed  method compared to state-of-the-art approaches. </p

    Robust mixed-order graph learning for incomplete multi-view clustering

    Incomplete multi-view clustering (IMVC) aims to address the clustering problem of multi-view data with partially missing samples and has received widespread attention in recent years. Most existing IMVC methods still have the following issues that require to be further addressed. They focus solely on the first-order correlation information among samples, neglecting the more intricate high-order connections. Additionally, these methods always overlook the noise or inaccuracies in the similarity matrix. To address above issues, a novel method named Robust Mixed-order Graph Learning (RMoGL) is proposed for IMVC. Specifically, to enhance the robustness to noise, the similarity matrices are separated into clean graphs and noise graphs. To capture complex high-order relationships among samples, the dynamic high-order similarity graphs are innovatively constructed from the recovered data. The clean graphs are endowed with mixed-order information and tend towards to obtain a consensus graph via a self-weighted manner. An efficient algorithm based on Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is designed to solve the proposed RMoGL, and superior performance is demonstrated by compared with nine state-of-the-art methods across eight datasets. </p
