de l’artiste
Les œuvres de Geneviève Thibault ques-
tionnent - à travers une réflexion sur l’habiter - 
les soi-disant frontières entre l’espace public et 
l’espace privé, l’identité et l’altérité, le territoire 
intime et le tissu social, ainsi que les forces à 
l’œuvre dans l’acte d’habiter. Elle utilise la pho-
tographie, la vidéo, l’installation et l’écriture 
pour donner forme à ses questionnements dans 
différents espaces, qu’ils soient réels ou vir-
tuels. Ainsi, sa pratique se déploie au contact 
de l’altérité, dans les environnements domes-
tiques qu’elle aime visiter à l’improviste. Les 
confinements des dernières années ont trans-
formé ses méthodes et l’ont amenée à réfléchir 
à l’espace intérieur depuis l’intérieur. Au corps 
et à la maison. Non pas dans une perspective 
de repli, mais plutôt dans un mouvement cir-
culatoire entre le soi et son contexte. Vers une 
écriture du dehors.
Ses projets photographiques ont été diffusés 
au Québec, en Ontario et en Europe. Elle en-
seigne la photographie au Cégep de Matane 
tout en poursuivant une maîtrise en Pratiques 
des arts à l’Université du Québec en Ou-
taouais. Geneviève Thibault est boursière au 
Conseil des arts du Canada et au Conseil des 
arts et des lettres du Québec, lauréate 2019 
du Prix international des Nouvelles Écritures 
(Freelens, France) pour la petite œuvre multi-
média L’amour, la mort… et lauréate 2020 du 
Prix à la relève artistique au Bas-Saint-Laurent. 
 
About  
the artist
By reflecting on the meaning of inhabiting, 
Geneviève Thibault’s work examines the 
so-called borders between public and private 
space, identity and alterity, intimate terrain and 
social fabric, as well as the forces at work in the 
act of inhabiting. She uses photography, video, 
installation, and text to give form to her critical 
questions in a variety of real and virtual spaces. 
Her art practice develops through contact with 
alterity in domestic environments, which she 
likes to visit unexpectedly. The lockdowns in re-
cent years have transformed her methods and 
led her to reflect on interior spaces from inside 
the body and the home. Not from the perspec-
tive of withdrawal but rather through a circular 
movement between self and context. Towards 
writing from the exterior. 
Her photography projects have been presented 
in Quebec, Ontario, and Europe. She teaches 
photography at Cégep de Matane and is pur-
suing a master’s degree in art practices at the 
Université du Québec en Outaouais. Thibault 
has received support from the Canada Coun-
cil for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des 
lettres du Québec, and has won the 2019 Nou-
velles Écritures international prize (Freelens, 
France) for her short multimedia work L’amour, 
la mort… and the 2020 Prix à la relève artis-
tique of Bas-Saint-Laurent.

Corps habité réunit une sélection d’œuvres de 
Geneviève Thibault, issues de conversations 
menées depuis quelques années entre l’artiste 
et les Ursulines de Québec. Faisant face 
au vieillissement de leur congrégation, ces 
dernières ont annoncé en 2017 que la grande 
majorité de leurs membres devrait quitter le 
couvent du Vieux-Québec, érigé sur le terrain 
qu’elles occupent depuis l’arrivée de Marie 
de l’Incarnation en 1639, pour déménager 
dans une résidence pour personnes âgées 
de Beauport. Seul un petit comité de quatre 
religieuses allait demeurer sur le site1, afin 
de réfléchir à de nouvelles vocations pour 
ce lieu patrimonial. Soucieuse de la charge 
émotionnelle qu’allait représenter un tel 
déménagement au sein de cette communauté, 
et réalisant l’importance historique de ce 
moment de transition, Thibault emploiera 
différentes stratégies documentaires pour 
conserver des traces de cet événement. Ces 
captations photographiques, vidéographiques 
et sonores sont mobilisées dans l’exposition 
présentée à DRAC, remaniées dans un 
parcours qui permet d’aller à la rencontre 
de quelques-unes des dernières religieuses 
ayant habité le lieu. 
Cet important processus documentaire a 
aussi permis à l’artiste d’offrir un cadeau aux 
Ursulines, qui a mené à la création d’une 
œuvre vidéo placée en plein cœur de Corps 
habité. Après la pandémie, Thibault a organisé 
pour les religieuses la présentation d’une 
reconstitution de la chapelle intérieure du 
monastère, qu’elles ont découvert en portant 
un casque de réalité virtuelle. Toutefois, cette 
expérience de réalité virtuelle n’est jamais 
accessible aux publics de l’exposition, qui 
observe plutôt les différentes réactions que 
suscite la réapparition évanescente de ce lieu 
qu’elles ont quitté. À défaut de voir l’image, les 
visiteurs ont accès au travail de conception 
sonore de l’artiste Thibaut Quinchon, réalisé 
à partir d’un mélange des archives sonores 
de l’artiste et de prises de son obtenues lors 
du tournage.
 
Dans ce corpus d’œuvres empreint d’une 
certaine mélancolie, Geneviève Thibault 
nous offre ainsi un accès privilégié, bien que 
limité, au cœur du quotidien des Ursulines de 
Québec. Une attention particulière est portée 
au jardin des Mères, que l’artiste photographie 
au gré des saisons en accompagnant les 
religieuses qui s’y promènent, et à la chapelle 
intérieure, qui est réservée aux religieuses. Le 
Corps habité qui donne son titre à l’exposition 
représente d’une part ces parcelles du 
couvent inaccessibles puisqu’elles relèvent 
de la sphère privée et qu’elles ne peuvent 
être révélées que sous condition. D’autre 
part, il est aussi la présence physique 
des religieuses, captée avec sensibilité et 
discrétion par l’artiste. L’exposition permet 
ainsi de réfléchir la tension entre la mission 
commune d’un ordre religieux de même 
que la dévotion intime de chacune de ses 
membres. 
Le titre de l’exposition fait aussi un clin d’œil au 
rituel de l’eucharistie, dans lequel le corps du 
Christ est consommé symboliquement sous 
la forme d’une hostie : un acte de foi répété 
qui rappelle la constance des soins qu’ont 
apportés les religieuses à la conservation de 
ce bâtiment, autre preuve de leur engagement 
envers l’ordre des Ursulines. 
Corps habité est rempli de parallèles 
entre dispositif d’exposition et dispositif 
religieux, qui tous deux oscillent entre effets 
d’ensemble et effets de fragmentation, entre 
les registres de l’intime et du collectif. Mais 
l’exposition évite justement de transformer 
l’important processus de documentation de 
Thibault en une expérience immersive pour 
tous, dans laquelle il s’agirait de faire croire 
à une réincarnation de l’édifice dans sa 
vocation originelle. Dans un ouvrage de 1997, 
la chercheure Janet Murray décrit d’ailleurs 
la sensation d’une expérience immersive 
comme «un plongeon dans l’océan ou dans 
une piscine : la sensation d’être entouré d’une 
réalité complètement autre, aussi différente 
que l’eau l’est de l’air, qui accapare toute notre 
attention, tout notre appareil perceptif2 ». 
La métaphore est faite pour le Christianisme, 
qui compte souvent sur cet effet 
d’immersion : pensons au baptême, dans 
lequel un corps est plongé dans une source 
d’eau, ou encore à la décoration des Églises 
conçue comme un programme total, destiné 
à raviver la foi des personnes croyantes. Si, 
suivant la formule de Murray, les expériences 
immersives sont comme des plongeons en 
eau profonde, Corps habité est un ruisseau 
qui serpente, se glisse sous terre et apparaît 
momentanément ; un cours d’eau discret dont 
on prend conscience par moments. 
La pratique photographique de Thibault agit 
doublement dans ce projet. Elle y est d’abord 
un médium en soi, avec des spécificités et 
des conditions qui s’opposent à l’expérience 
proprement immersive : la coupe, la fixité, le 
fragment, la sérialité, le statut changeant entre 
l’œuvre et le document. On y constate l’image 
comme un objet incarné, qui existe parce qu’en 
« contingence3» avec ce qu’il représente, et 
qui témoigne tout aussi efficacement d’une 
présence que d’une absence. Ces conditions 
photographiques fournissent aussi à l’artiste 
un protocole observé au-delà de l’image : 
dans ce désir de substituer à l’image 
immersive une série de fragments dans 
lesquels l’absence de représentation, les 
silences, l’impossibilité d’accès sont aussi 
évocateurs que l’accès, la parole, l’image. 
Ces spécificités photographiques semblaient 
pourtant évacuées étant donné la mer 
d’images dans laquelle nous nous retrouvons 
plongé·e·s chaque jour, et qui donnent cette 
fausse impression qu’une immersion dans 
l’image est inévitable. En constatant les 
possibilités et les limites d’une immersion 
à tout prix, et en privilégiant donc le mode 
d’adresse proprement photographique du 
fragment, le travail de Thibault installe une 
posture spectatorielle près de celle évoquée 
par Jacques Rancière et mise en exergue de 
cet essai : si l’œuvre n’a pas la prétention de 
restituer à une communauté le lieu habité, ou 
de truquer le regard du visiteur d’exposition 
pour faire croire, elle peut néanmoins 
permettre de prendre acte, mais surtout de 
ressentir.

Corps habité assembles a selection of works 
by Geneviève Thibault that have come out of 
conversations carried out between the artist 
and the Ursulines of Quebec over several 
years. In 2017, the Ursulines announced 
that in view of their aging congregation most 
of their members would have to leave the 
convent in Old Quebec, where the order had 
lived since Marie de l’Incarnation arrived in 
1639, and relocate to a seniors’ residence 
in Beauport. Only a small committee of four 
sisters would remain in the convent4,  in order 
to reflect on new vocations for this heritage 
site. Mindful of the emotional toll that such 
a move would represent for the community 
and aware of the historical importance of this 
transitional moment, Thibault used different 
documentary strategies to record traces 
of the event. This photographic, video, and 
sound documentation is mobilized in the 
exhibition at DRAC, reworked in a trajectory 
that introduces us to some of the last nuns to 
inhabit the place.
This important documentary process also 
allowed the artist to offer a gift to the Ursulines, 
which led to the creation of a video work that 
is at the centre of Corps habité. After the 
pandemic, Thibault presented the nuns with a 
reconstitution of the convent’s chapel, which 
they could discover through VR headsets. 
However, instead of having access to the 
virtual reality experience, exhibition visitors 
get to observe the nuns’ different reactions 
to the fleeting reappearance of the place that 
they have left. For want of an image, visitors 
have access to a sound work created by artist 
Thibaut Quinchon, which combines Thibault’s 
sound archives with sound recordings made 
during the video shoot.
 
Through this somewhat melancholic body 
of works, Thibault gives us a privileged 
though limited access to the daily life of the 
Ursulines of Quebec. A particular attention 
is paid to the Mothers’ garden, which the 
artist photographs in different seasons in the 
company of the nuns strolling there, and to 
the interior chapel, which is reserved for the 
sisters’ use. The inhabited body that gives 
its name to the exhibition in part represents 
sections of the convent that are not accessible 
to the public because they are part of the 
private sphere and can only be shown under 
certain conditions. It also represents the 
physical presence of the nuns, captured with 
sensitivity and discretion by the artist. The 
exhibition allows us, therefore, to reflect on 
the tension between the common purpose of 
a religious order and the personal devotion of 
each of its members. The exhibition’s title also 
nods to the ritual of the Eucharist, in which 
Christ’s body is symbolically consumed in the 
form of sacramental bread: a repeated act of 
faith that evokes the nuns’ constant care to 
preserve the building, another proof of their 
commitment to the Order of the Ursulines. 
Corps habité is full of parallels between 
the exhibition apparatus and the religious 
apparatus, both of which move between 
the effects of the whole and the effects 
of fragmentation, between intimate and 
collective registers. Yet the exhibition 
avoids transforming Thibault’s important 
documentation process into an immersive 
experience for everyone, making people 
believe in the reincarnation of a building’s 
original vocation. In a book from 1997, scholar 
Janet H. Murray describes the experience 
of immersion as “a plunge in the ocean 
or swimming pool: the sensation of being 
surrounded by a completely other reality, as 
different as water is from air, that takes over 
all of our attention, our whole perceptual 
apparatus5”. 
The metaphor befits Christianity, which 
often relies on this effect of immersion: 
consider baptism, for example, in which a 
body is plunged in a body of water, or the 
decoration of churches, which is conceived of 
as a complete program designed to rekindle 
believers’ faith. If immersive experiences, 
according to Murray, are like plunges in 
deep water, Corps habité is a meandering 
creek that slips underground and reappears 
momentarily; an unobtrusive stream of which 
we become aware from time to time. 
Thibault’s photography practice functions in 
two ways in this project. It is a medium in 
itself with distinctive features and conditions 
that are contrary to a strictly immersive 
experience: the view, the stillness, the 
fragment, the seriality, the fluid status 
between work and document. We see the 
image as an embodied object, which is 
“contingent”6  on what it represents and which 
is equally effective at showing presence as it 
is at showing absence. 
These photographic conditions also provide 
the artist with a protocol that goes beyond 
the image: a desire to replace the immersive 
image with a series of fragments in which 
the absence of representation, silence, and 
impossibility of access are as evocative 
as access, speech, and image. Yet these 
distinctive photographic features seem to 
be eliminated given the sea of images in 
which we plunge every day and which give 
us the false impression that an immersion 
in the image is inevitable. By observing the 
possibilities and limitations of immersion at 
all cost and by focusing on the fragment’s 
strictly photographic mode of address, 
Thibault’s work sets up a spectator position 
similar to the one evoked by Jacques Rancière 
and highlighted in this essay: although the 
work does not claim to restore an inhabited 
place to a community or to trick the eyes of 
visitors in order to make them believe, it can 
nevertheless allow us to take cognizance of 
and actually feel something.

To dismiss the fantasies of the word made flesh and the spectator 
rendered active, to know what words are merely words and spectacles 
merely spectacles, can help us arrive at a better understanding of how 
words and images, stories and performances, can change something of 
the world we live in.
