Inemuri : dormir présent.e
" The book inemuri 居眠り dormir présent.e (sleeping while present) is the result of research conducted as part of a CALQ residency at the Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) in the summer of 2023 in Tokyo, Japan. The project explores the ethical, sociological and economic dimensions of inemuri, the Japanese practice of sleeping in public places in response to widespread overwork. Both functional and fictional, a portable resting cell is imagined to delimit a personal space for sleepers, right in public places. Photographs taken in collaboration with Japanese participants document the various activations in specific contexts.
Created in collaboration with graphic designer Étienne Murphy, this artist book presents two photographic series shot in Tokyo (2017, 2023). Experimental design and materials explore different aspects of the project. An essay by Japanese author and artist Mieko Matsumoto offers insight into her relationship with the phenomenon of inemuri and her experience using the resting cell in the Tokyo subway. By juxtaposing these different viewpoints, this artist book takes the form of a visual, material, and textual essay. In a poetic and anthropological way, the essay traces the many manifestations and dimensions of inemuri, a uniquely Japanese phenomenon. " -- Artist's websit
Sydney Frances Pascal : We Raised Ourselves, Together and Alone
“We raised ourselves, together and alone is a new iteration of an ongoing work that has focused on three generations: my Grandmother, my Mother, and I. This work is comprised of hides in different forms, from raw hide, through smoked raw hide to buckskin. Hide-tanning is one of the traditional material practices that determine my connection to land, to my Lil’wat identity, and to family. This ancient process is also integral in telling my story and asserting my culture in public spaces through its presence as a medium and its natural smoky emanation. My thinking throughout the creation of this installation has involved acknowledging the ancestors and family from the previous generations that have led to me being here today; it is equally dedicated to imagining the future generations, holding onto hope, as we live in a world that is in a state of uncertainty.” -- page 2 of documen
