PE-VINS: Accurate Monocular Visual-Inertial SLAM With Point-Edge Features
Visual-Inertial Navigation Systems (VINS) is a significant undertaking in computer vision, robotics, and autonomous driving. Currently, point-line VINS have attracted significant attention due to their increased robustness and accuracy compared to point-only VINS. However, their effectiveness relies on the existence of clear line structures within the scene. Point-line VINS may become inaccurate or fail when scenes contain scattered lines or other features like arcs. Moreover, extracting and matching line features can bring computational overheads due to complex geometric models. In order to address VINS challenges without the overheads related to lines, we propose a novel approach, denoted as PE-VINS, which adds edge features to point-based VINS. Our proposed employs edge features in scenes to establish extra correspondences between views and then enhance its accuracy and robustness. Our method identifies edge features using image gradients and selects the most informative ones in the front end. We leverage sparse optical flow to track selected edge features and triangulate them using the initial pose predicted by the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). In the back end, we present a novel edge feature residual formulation that differs from the traditional reprojection residual. We tightly couple the new edge residual with the reprojection and IMU preintegration residual to better refine camera poses. We test our PE-VINS on public datasets, and our results show that it outperforms existing point-line-based methods and achieves state-of-the-art VINS performance. The code will be released at https://github.com/BlueAkoasm/PE-VINS
Semblanzas de senectud: Luis Cernuda y Vicente Aleixandre retratados por Jorge Guillén en Final
This work studies two poetic portraits published by Jorge Guillén in Final: those of Luis Cernuda and Vicente Aleixandre. They are a caricature and a eulogy. The analysis leads to a reflection on their meaning in Aire Nuestro, together with certain weaknesses and some incoherence on the part of the author. The differences between the texts, very visible in the elements reiterated in both, such as the use of questions or the way of capturing the voice of the other, end up outlining a sort of mirror in which the portraitist glimpses himself and which highlights the facet of self-portrait that every portrait entails, or what it supposes as a means of expression of the subjectivity underlying the protagonist’s gaze
CDK4/6 inhibitors for metastatic breast cancer in routine clinical practice in Spain: survey of patterns of use and oncologists’ perceptions
Purpose
To assess the use of cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors in routine clinical practice in Spain, as well as the perceptions from oncologists.
Methods
A survey was developed by nine oncologists, experts in breast cancer, practising in Spain. Survey responses were collected between July 2022 and April 2023.
Results
Fifty-one survey responses were obtained. Most oncologists used CDK4/6 inhibitors in the first line. The first-line endocrine therapy most frequently used was an aromatase inhibitor (endocrine-sensitive disease) and fulvestrant (endocrine-resistant disease). CDK4/6 inhibitors were used for primary or secondary resistance, or visceral disease without visceral crisis. A lower-than-standard starting dose was considered (57% of respondents) for specific profiles. Strategies to manage toxicity included switching to another CDK4/6 inhibitor or delaying the next dose. CDK4/6 inhibitors were mostly considered to improve quality of life.
Conclusions
Use of CDK4/6 inhibitors in Spain follows current recommendations and aligns with the evidence
Post-vaccination evaluation of an erysipelas/parvovirus bivalent vaccine administered to sows during lactation on follicular development and piglet growth
Vaccines against Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (ER) and porcine parvovirus (PPV) are employed in sow farms worldwide. This study evaluated the impact of administering a bivalent ER/PPV vaccine during lactation. Multiparous sows (n = 83) of two different farms (A (herd size 900 sows) and B (1000 sows)) were allocated in two different groups: 1) sows inoculated with saline solution (non-vaccinated group); 2) sows inoculated with the bivalent vaccine against ER/PPV (vaccinated group). The injections were administered at ∼11 days of lactation. The study was conducted in four different experiments: the first experiment, evaluating the female genital tract (uterus and ovary) and follicle development, was performed in culled sows (n = 19) of Farm A the day after weaning (∼24 days). The remaining experiments, which examined internal temperature, offspring growth, and sow feed intake, were conducted at Farm B (n = 64). The results of follicle populations, showed a greater frequency of large follicles in non-vaccinated compared to vaccinated sows was observed (p < 0.001). The final weight of the piglets and their weight gain were higher in the non-vaccinated group (p ≤ 0.05). A statistical trend was also observed in the average weight gain of piglets. No differences were observed regarding sow´s rectal temperature between groups around the period of injection but the vaccinated group consumed less sow feed on the day of injection (p = 0.016). In conclusion, the administration of this vaccine against ER/PPV during the lactation period had a negative impact on follicle development, sow feed intake, and offspring weight gain and final weight
In situ Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence of gold nanoclusters for enzymatic biosensors
A fluorescent enzymatic biosensor based on the in-situ observation of the MEF (Metal- Enhanced Fluorescence) effect has been developed for the first time. It has been demonstrated that during the enzymatic reaction of cadaverine with Diamine Oxidase (DAO) (used as proof of concept) in the presence of Au (III), the product can reduce the gold precursor to form AuNPs. When the reaction takes place in the presence of silica-coated gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@Si), an increase in the fluorescence signal is observed, which can also be related to the concentration of cadaverine. To understand the mechanism, the interaction between the AuNCs@Si and the enzymatic reaction, as well as their interaction with Au (III), has been studied. Under optimal conditions, the method shows a linear response range up to 250 μM Cadaverine, a limit of quantification of 52 μM and a limit of detection of 16 μM, which is about two orders of magnitude lower than the method without MEF (DAO/cadaverine/Au (III). It has been applied to the determination of cadaverine in spiked oily fish with a recovery of 95 ± 8 % (n = 3) and no significant differences (P = 0.05) were observed compared to a reference method. This MEF effect was also observed for the enzymatic determination of both xanthine with xanthine oxidase and tyramine with tyramine oxidase
The evolutionary political economy of dichotomized societies
Referendum practices and other forms of antagonistic political participation have become more commonplace in the last two decades. These practices have significant social and economic consequences and, as such, economic theory must study their development. In this work, we study the cases of binary political choices, encompassed in what we call the evolutionary political economy of dichotomized societies. We see the origins of these phenomena in certain streams of socio-political thought and analyze the conditions of their evolution. We also link our study with contributions to polarization research in socio-physics and mathematical sociology. Drawing on these fields, we present a new model that allows us to analyze these processes and obtain scenarios with different implications. Drawing on the model, we ask questions such as: can we determine specific conditions under which a referendum may end up truly reflecting the structural trend of public opinion? Are there situations in which dichotomized political processes may lead to surprising results? Can we characterize polarization as an emergent property of evolving political economies? Depending on specific parametric regimes, very different answers to these questions emerge
