Which Hermeneutical Method Is Suggested by the New Historiography of Science
Whereas “Science does not think" (Heidegger), the "new historiography of science" - mainly Koyré's and Kuhn's ones - has addressed our minds to think about science in a new way. Recently Heelan suggested taking this new viewpoint for conceiving hermeneutic method in a more adequate way to present scientific practice. By an interpretative analysis of the categories of the above two historians, the present paper suggests a new way to conceive the foundations of science. Two basic dichotomies result: on the kind of logic and on the kind of mathematics. They generate four models of scientific theory, sharply severed by the radical differences in their respective choices; that offers an accurate definition of incommensurability and even of an alternative scientific theory to a dominant one, which can be properly called a paradigm. In the past hermeneutic scholars gave negative appraisals on Western science; according to the new viewpoint recognising pluralism in the foundations of science, these appraisals concern the dominant paradigm only. In the light of the basic dichotomies a new way to define hermeneutics is suggested; it can be qualified in short by the following words: ‘The understanding of science is the science of understanding’

Gaspara a Venezia, Gaspara e Venezia
Gaspara Stampa lived in the heyday of Venetian publishing, when books and culture were also spreading to social groups previously excluded from direct ownership of books. Highlighting this phenomenon, the article focuses on the Venetian frequentations of Gaspara Stampa, who enjoyed a reputation as an excellent singer and was praised for this ability by numerous musicians and literati of her time. Leaving out Collaltino di Collalto, article talks about the personalities in Venice who had relations with her. Finally, mention is made of the church in which she was buried and the impossibility of finding her tomb.
The article focuses on investigating, through two stories dedicated to the authors, the inner world of Gaspara Stampa and Isabella Morra, their affinities and differences, the places and atmospheres in which their poetry germinated, the difficulties of their era to accept that a woman could express herself autonomously and poetically, expressing her needs and desires. Both born in the first half of the sixteenth century and despite belonging to different worlds and conditions, they express themselves autonomously with respect to the dominant canons. Their mastery in the use of the sonnet, combined with the originality of language, reveal the complexity of their cultural and intellectual formation.
Shells and feeding bottles: continuity or breach between Greece and Rome?
The presence of these feeding bottles deposited in graves of Roman Gaul brings forth questions regarding such practice, as the analyses of the contents lead us to link them more to body care. The presence of shells in some of the feeding bottle graves also brings us to consider these assemblages from a gender perspective, due to the attribution of shells to mundus muliebris.
In the history of modern illustration, that is in the modernist years 1910-1930, Banalité by Léon-Paul Fargue (texte), with « compositions » by Fabien Loris and Roger Parry, is a truly innovative volume, which maintains however certain aspects of the traditional illustrated book. What is new in this publication is the merger of a classic format, well-known by bibliophile readers, and a new medium, photography, still discarded from the market of rare and expensive books. The authors’ attempt to introduce the new into the old is quite similar to what one finds in French modernist typography, as represented by the magazine Arts et métiers graphiques, which adapts the Bauhaus revolution to a broader French audience. At first sight, the book limits itself to conventionally adding images to text, yet these illustrations are complemented by a collective work on the work’s layout, which transforms the fundamentally nostalgic text by Fargue into a crucial step in experimental book design in French.
Drawing the (Un)finished Line in The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Studies devoted to The Mystery of Edwin Drood have tended, in some cases, to dismiss it as a great albeit incomplete novel, whereas others have pushed forward, rather than backward, the speculations raised by this text, with a series of hypotheses regarding the disclosure of the mystery, and its possible epilogue. Notwithstanding the status of Dickens’s last novel as an unfinished text, The Mystery of Edwin Drood features a closed narrative structure and may be studied as a finished text. Charles Allston Collins’s sketched wrapper design and Luke Fildes’s wrapper and illustrations reflect the novel’s mixture of symbolic and realistic elements and feature a complete visualisation of its main themes. In this respect, these visual texts may be also analysed and “read” as original and independent, rather than derivative, works. Finally, the mystery the title alludes to suggests the actual impossibility of disclosing all of the novel’s (and illustrations’) enigmas and encapsulates a paradigm of unsolvability that is central to The Mystery of Edwin Drood
The simultaneous publication of two illustrated novels in Italy (Cento anni by Giuseppe Rovani in 1868-1869 and The Last Days of Pompeii by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1870) highlights that a large part of the public of the time still preferred past-time stories duly documented, also from the visual point of view. However, the timing was not the only convergence between the two books. Rovani had read Bulwer-Lytton in the translation by the admired Francesco Cèusani and had appreciated the British writer so much that not only did he redeem him in the Preludio to his most important novel. From him, he also draws ideas and narrative formulas for his own work. This article intends to investigate the inter-iconic relationship that arises from both books in their illustrated version, focusing, in particular, on the question of their historical setting. Finally, two different ideas of catastrophe distinguish both books. However, the conviction that the past exerts its influence on the present remains.
