Critical Theory and Psychoanalysis in Leo Löwenthal

    Get PDF
This article explores the role of the psychoanalytic component in Leo Lowenthal's analysis of domination, in order to understand the architecture of the subject that disintegrates and is configured within the capitalist organization of existence, whose contemporary deployments show not only the validity of Löwenthal's approaches, as a Frankfurtian thinker, but also the imperative need, from a Latin American perspective, to establish constructive links with his legacy. This study aims to analyse psychoanalysis as a basic component of Leo Löwenthal’s critical theory. It focuses on the configuration of subjectivity within late capitalism. Bearing in mind Löwenthal's idea that the culture industry is psychoanalysis in reverse, it also explores the actuality of some problematic components of the sociability that the cultural industry promotes and reproduces. They deserve to be psychoanalytically addressed. &nbsp

Pratiche di cantiere e continuità funzionali: osservazioni sulle modalità di rinnovamento in alcune fabbriche veronesi di epoca romanica

The need to ensure the continuity of liturgical practice during the adaptation of the architectural body sometimes required the adoption of construction site management methods that were highly attentive to pre-existing structures. This is particularly evident in cases involving significant sites that had to keep the sacred space operational even during the complex renovation work. If the replacement of the entire structure was planned, every action had to be carefully coordinated, and the project had to take into account the old structure, preserving it as long as possible. The essay identifies some cases in Verona where a clear strategy of succession seems to have influenced the new icnography. The monastery of San Fermo Maggiore (1065) and the cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare (first half of the 12th century), through the evaluation of certain archaeological indicators, suggest the adoption of a deliberate intention to preserve the pre-existing structure until the new one could fully accommodate ritual actions. In both cases, the ancient buildings were entirely replaced while maintaining their integrity until the most advanced phase of construction on the new Romanesque structures.

The thought of P.A. Florensky is a peculiar expression of Russian philosophy and, more generally, of Russian cultural identity. At the same time, it can nevertheless be regarded as a legitimate heir to the cultural tradition which from its powerful Ionian roots unfolds through the peaks and abysses of Western philosophy stricto sensu, up to the ultimate crises of contemporary thought..

    The Unconscious as the Alien

    Get PDF
Through a comparison of the phenomenological motif of the alien and the psychoanalytic motif of the unconscious, a critique is advanced against Cartesian dualism, which recurs today in the natural sciences and in the split of the contemporary individual, divided between spirit and nature, the proper world and the alien world, the inner sphere and the outer sphere. It is a matter of thinking of an original subtraction, an absent presence that begins with ourselves, in a slippage that achieves no synthesis.Through a comparison of the phenomenological motif of the alien and the psychoanalytic motif of the unconscious, a critique is advanced against Cartesian dualism, which recurs today in the natural sciences and in the split of the contemporary individual, divided between spirit and nature, the proper world and the alien world, the inner sphere and the outer sphere. Beyond the Primacy of Representation

The primacy of representation, to which – at least according to Paul Ricoeur – Edmund Husserl would have remained faithful, is radically questioned in Emmanuel Levinas’ famous essay on the "ruin of representation" (1959). The phenomenological structure of intentionality, in which “something appears as something”, confirms the need to “break out of the magic circle of representation”. Indeed, it is precisely by means of a detailed analysis of “intentionality”, insofar as the latter appears as characterized by an essential Mehrmeinun. Levinas brings out the overcoming of representation, that is, the abandonment of the latter's claim to subordinate thought to the objective necessity of presence. Within the horizon of presence, the necessity of being-thus-and-not-otherwise overwhelms the sense of the possible, and the actual evidence annihilates the being-able-to-be-otherwise of human experience. Through the analysis of intentionality and its potentiality, it is possible to bring out the transition from a philosophy of the necessary constraints of evidence, linked to the primacy of representation, to a philosophy of the power-able-to-be-otherwise. After all, the ruin of representation is the ruin of the instant or eternity of evidence, relegated into the actuality of consciousness. By subtracting itself from the self-referential necessity of evidence, the ethical Sinngebung evocated by Levinas at the end of his 1959 article connects intentionality to the sense of the possible, making explicit its openness to the future in radical form. The primacy of representation, to which – at least according to Paul Ricoeur – Edmund Husserl would have remained faithful, is radically questioned in Emmanuel Levinas’ famous essay on the "ruin of representation" (1959). Into Horror with Walpole

This article highlights some of the key aspects that laid the ground for the new literary genre of the Gothic novel. Drawing from different interests and traditions, Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto (1764) defied rules, critics, and philosophies of the times deliberately, through a prolific tension between past and present, word and image, “fancy” and reality.

This paper aims to explore the intertwining of utopia, reality, and politics in the construction of a more socially just, free, and inclusive world through 21st-century Chilean working-class literature. Utopia understood as a means of expressing desires and hopes, finds its generative core in thorough reflections on the problems of the present. Diamela Eltit’s novel Sumar, which explores the pressing issues of the Chilean working world and the utopian collective reorganization of marginal, dissident, and liminal subjectivities, is an example of this dialogical relationship between the factual and the fictional. Sociosemiotic analysis will provide the methodological and speculative basis for presenting, on the one hand, the wasting relationships that shape the world of the neo-working class; on the other, Gramscian political action of the subaltern classes, understood as class alliances for mobilization against capitalism and the bourgeois state.
