This article proposes an exam of the novel Los ojos vacíos, published in 2000 by the Spanish novelist Fernando Aramburu. The novel inaugurates the trilogy set in the imagined town of Antíbula and, in spite of presenting date and events which apparently belong to the historical reality, it is actually an alienating reproposition of a “possible world”, set in an imaginary time and a space. With a retrotopian, or dystopian approach developed in this kind of fiction, the author shows a deep idea of the human being, committed in deciphering, interpreting and understanding History, his destiny, the present time and his future.
The article investigates the literary anthropocene scenarios proposed by José María Merino in the short stories collection Noticias del Antropoceno (2021). This politically committed work reframes the narrative on the human-nature relationship in a realist perspective, a novelty in comparison with the author’s previous writings of fantastic genre. Starting from theoretical reflections on the concept of “Anthropocene”, a number of short stories from the volume are examined, thereby ascribing the collection the category of literary ecology. The analysis of extreme but real settings in the stories, such as the plastic island or ‘Pacific trash vortex’, shows how literature can make environmental catastrophe visible, in order to promote ecological ethics and awaken the dormant consciences of readers.L’articolo indaga gli scenari dell’antropocene letterario proposto da José María Merino nella raccolta narrativa Noticias del Antropoceno (2021), opera impegnata che riformula il racconto della relazione uomo-natura mediante una prospettiva realista, segnando uno scarto con la produzione precedente dell’autore, di taglio fantastico.

This article takes as its starting point the representation of narcotic substances in César Vallejo's Trilce with the intention of problematizing the articulation between the formal and thematic ruptures that the avant-garde exposes and the disruptive potential of sensory alteration as a fundamental procedure that makes drug a literary technique. To this end, we analyze in particular the poem LVII, with the intention of highlighting the particular diction of the poetic self as a direct inheritance from Valdelomar and the Colónidas. The poem shows how the presence of the pharmacon and its double meaning sustain the structure of the poem. In this way, the literary uses of sensory alteration are exposed in the context of the emergence of the Latin American avant-garde by recognizing the terminological ambiguity and its potential from the staging of a new (a)ddiction of the poet.
Filmmaking in School as an Educational, Inclusive and Emancipatory Resource in 1960s-1970s Italy
This article explores the value of filmmaking for holistic education. It begins with a brief, inexhaustive summary of how an increasingly “technological” culture has been (and still is) influencing Western educational practices. Framed through a historical-pedagogical perspective, three case studies are offered that relate to Italian experiences in the 1960s and 70s, each pioneering in its peculiarities: 1) the Centro Studi Cinematografici (Cinematographic Studies Center) in schools of all grades; 2) the Mount Olimpino Cooperative's research cinema with children from special schools and differential classes; and 3) an integrated three-year proposal by Ulisse Adorni with Giovanni Martinelli in one of Parma's elementary schools. Data include archival material, unpublished documentation, and interviews to advocate the high educational value of filmmaking in preventing and counteracting youth educational deprivation and adult pedagogical poverty. This article explores the value of filmmaking for holistic education.
The article aims to analyse the way in which the novelistic production of the late seventeenth century deals with astrology. In particular, it examines Engaños de mujeres y desengaños de los hombres (1698) by Miguel de Montreal, in relation both to the coeval prose of ideas – especially El hombre práctico (1686) by Francisco Gutiérrez de los Ríos, Count of Fernán Núñez – and to the discourse Astrología judiciaria y almanaques, published in the first volume of the Teatro crítico universal (1726) by Benito Jerónimo Feijoo. The objective is to illustrate how the arguments adopted by Montreal – even those of classical origins – are used in accordance with the new epistemological orientation which emerged between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, during which the value of experience and of empirical data played a central role.
This paper discusses the representation of spaces in the novel Affinity (1999) by Sarah Waters. Specifically, it investigates the representation of a public space (the prison) and a private space (the house), and the ways in which they intertwine and mirror each other. By adopting the critical tools of Carla Freccero’s queer spectrality, this paper explores the representation of the homosexual relationship between the two female protagonists, and how it is connected to the representation of the spaces of the novel. Waters creates a series of dichotomies (visible/invisible, public/private, confinement/liberation) that end up being different faces of the same oppression imposed on the protagonists.

Collective Forms of Storytelling in Suburban Novels
This article explores the public dimension of dwelling in two American suburban novels that employ collective forms of storytelling and exemplify the deep entanglement between narrative form and sense of place. Drawing on research at the intersection of narratology and new formalism, the article will demonstrate the inextricable relationship between narrative form and spatiality. While sociocultural representations of suburban space have typically understood it as a static backdrop, the analysis focuses on four strategies displayed by the we-narrative in Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Virgin Suicides to convey a deeper understanding of the collective experience of the suburbs. The article then discusses the spatial forms underlying Eugenides’s novel and Rick Moody’s The Ice Storm. While the former builds on the spatial form of the whole as a site for negotiating individual and collective experience, The Ice Storm relies on the form of the hierarchical network to represent the spatial and sexual entanglement of dysfunctional suburban families while formally disrupting it through pseudo-multiperspectivity.
The Art of Dwelling in Public. Domestic and Public Space in Milena Jesenská’s Fashion Reportages of 1920-22 Vienna
Drawing on feminist urban studies (Stratigakos 2015, 2008; Blau 2015, 1999; Fitz-Krasny 2019), I revisit the early journalistic work of Milena Jesenská: the fourteen pieces that report from Vienna under siege in the aftermath of WWI for the Czech-language Prague-based periodical Tribuna, and yet, in a fashion column. As I argue, these texts illustrate new spaces of dwelling, namely how it is possible to dwell “in public”. Jesenská’s narratives capture eating habits according to wealth, occupation, class, personal expectations, ideology, and gender. Her literary ethnography of 1920s Vienna blurs the public/private divide. Specifically, her texts render the coffeehouse as a site of “fashionable poverty” that allows for the emergence of a new flaneuse, bohemian (and Bohemian), lifestyle. In Jesenská’s literary practices, the café becomes an icon of a libertine and decadent life for all, with a radical aesthetic: the obsession with a single idea (self-branding), expensive meals on credit (financial credibility and gift economy), and allegedly promiscuous sexual bonds connotes the coffeehouse as the most liminal of the spatial negotiations
The Kai kai is an ancestral practice of Rapa Nui culture that involves the creation of one or several figures made with a thread while narrating a story through singing or recitation called Patau’tau, all of the above accompanied by specific body movements. This practice comprises various languages that, as repertoires, contribute to the creation of the figure or landscape, which serves as a record or archive of the Kai kai narrative. Ultimately, the body supports a tradition restored through these acts of information transfer across generations. It is possible to consider that both dimensions, archive, and repertoires, are intrinsically linked to each other, forming part of a whole, and they allow for maintaining fundamental pieces of tradition and oral literature in the memory of the Rapa Nui people.
