No full textIn this article we investigate experiences of loneliness in radicalization processes. The main aim is to develop an empirically grounded theory of loneliness in contemporary forms of radicalization. Starting from Hannah Arendt’s political theory, which posits loneliness as a breeding ground for terror, the analysis extends to a critical phenomenological approach that takes the viewpoint of subjective experience while asking how these experiences are embedded in specific social structures in contemporary societies. The article thus bridges the gap between theoretical debates on (the politics of) loneliness and empirical research on processes of radicalization, extremism, and terrorism. We focus specifically on two sets of cases: lone-actor terrorists and female Western affiliates of ISIS. Our analysis reveals that whereas in right-wing long-actor terrorists, the fear of one’s individual and collective extinction plays an important role, in the case of Islamist radicalization in Western countries, experiences of discrimination and marginalization are crucial

No full textIn dit paper is onderzocht hoe deelnemers van een pensioenfonds bij een referendum zouden stemmen over de keuze tussen invaren van hun pensioen (oude en nieuwe pensioenrechten samenvoegen onder de nieuwe regels) en het ingroeien van hun pensioen (scheiding van oude en nieuwe rechten op basis van de bijbehorende regels). Via een online enquête is nagegaan hoe verschillende antwoordopties deze keuzes beïnvloeden.Bij alle geteste varianten van het referendum hebben de pensioendeelnemers een voorkeur voor het ingroeien van hun pensioenrechten. Toch hebben veel deelnemers weinig vertrouwen in hun eigen oordeel over de aanstaande pensioentransitie. Zij vinden het pensioenstelsel te ingewikkeld om er een gefundeerde mening over te vormen. Een referendum vinden ze daarom niet zinvol. Ongeveer de helft van de deelnemers is voorstander van het nemen van beslissingen door deskundigen, terwijl slechts 17 procent hier tegen is

No full textResearch SummaryThis article analyzes how innovation country-of-origin impacts the decisions of multinational corporations (MNCs) to defend their patents against infringement in foreign countries. We argue that MNCs have stronger incentives to defend their locally generated innovations (in foreign countries) than their home- or third-country generated innovations (that have been transferred to foreign countries) because of the higher risk for knowledge spillovers for locally generated innovations. We also explore whether a higher level of multimarket overlap in knowledge activities with industry rivals increases MNC decisions to defend their best innovations. We examine data on infringement cases brought by foreign firms operating in the United States and find results consistent with our expectations. Additionally, when split by patents' country-of-origin, our findings reveal several interesting differences.Managerial SummaryThis article examines how several characteristics of firm innovations influence knowledge spillover risks and the decisions of MNCs to defend their patents against infringement in foreign countries. We argue that locally generated patents and those patents that are more important (in terms of value and usage) or more exposed to rivals are more likely to be defended against infringement in foreign countries. Using data on firms in high tech industries and their patent infringement cases, we show support for our arguments while also revealing several interesting differences across the litigation decisions of MNCs when considering the patents' country-of-orign
Stochastic approaches for production-inventory planning:Applications to high-tech supply chains
No full textGrowing uncertainty in both demand and supply, fast-paced technologicaldevelopments, and increasingly stringent customer requirements progressivelycomplicate supply chain management across numerous industries. To improveefficiency and foster resilience, companies focus on optimizing their productioninventory planning processes, addressing the fundamental trade-off between inventory investments and customer service levels under uncertain conditions. This thesis develops stochastic mathematical models and solution approaches to optimize production-inventory systems with diverse characteristics. It examines centralized and decentralized decision-making structures, single- and multiperiod planning, and various supply chain configurations, including singleechelon and capacitated multi-echelon systems. The models address key sources of uncertainty, such as demand, lead times and new product introduction dynamics, while exploring both risk-neutral and risk-averse decision-making perspectives. In collaboration with ASML, a leader in the high-tech sector, the first part of the thesis introduces methods tailored to complex industry-driven settings. These include a rolling horizon decision framework for integrated production and buffer planning, multi-stage stochastic programming models for risk-averse service level management and product rollover planning, and a deep reinforcement learning-based inventory policy for handling non-stationary demand and capacity constraints. The second part emphasizes theoretical contributions, offering insights into decision making under demand correlation, risk aversion and contractual agreements through analytical models. By integrating practical and theoretical advancements, this thesis aims to contribute to the broader field of productioninventory planning and supply chain management, providing structural insights to guide and complement the development of general approaches to practical problems

No full textThis paper provides new evidence on the effect of job loss on health. Using unique micro level panel data from the Netherlands with detailed information on health measures, employment, and job loss expectations, we estimate the immediate effect of unexpected job loss on health. We find no evidence for decreases in health, either physical or mental, upon job loss, but clear evidence for immediate reductions in headaches and fatigue. Our results suggest that the immediate effects of reduced work stress are larger than the immediate increase in financial stress from job loss
