    Nudging forward:A novel strategy of shifting responsibility for beneficiaries of international protection

    Since 2020, tens of thousands of beneficiaries of international protection (BIPs) have used the refugee passports issued to them by the Greek authorities to travel to other European Union and Schengen countries, where they apply anew for asylum. Our qualitative analysis of data from various sources shows that these secondary movements are prompted by ‘nudging forward’: a novel responsibility-shifting strategy put forward by the Greek government. We argue that this strategy is based on a selective mix of targeted governmental action and inaction, which facilitates BIPs’ onward mobility and simultaneously obstructs BIPs settlement in Greece or return thereto

    When do employees perceive technology as stressful?:A meta-analysis of work-related technostress antecedents

    Workplace technostress, a consequence of technology use at work, has garnered significant attention in recent scientific investigations. However, existing findings on technostress are often dispersed and contradictory, necessitating a systematic exploration of its contributing factors. In this study, we build on transactional stress theory to consolidate information on potential antecedents of technostressor perceptions at work: techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, techno-invasion, techno-overload, and techno-uncertainty. Our random-effects meta-analysis of 84 relevant studies, covering 44,576 employees, illustrates a distinct pattern of antecedents for different technostressors, shedding light on the diverse influences shaping employees' perceptions of technostress

    Conditions of project knowledge transfer events:A qualitative exploration of configurations

    Transferring project knowledge is challenging due to the temporary nature of projects and the intense focus on meeting technical demands and milestones. Therefore, project participants must carefully determine which circumstances support or obstruct the transfer. This exploratory study aims to advance our understanding of whether specific conditions exist that hinder or facilitate project knowledge transfer, and whether different configurations of these conditions can support the project knowledge transfer event. From the analysis, a range of conditions could be identified. Furthermore, three configurations, labelled as formalistic, authoritative, and interactive configurations, were observed that supported the project knowledge transfer events. Each configuration combines specific features of actor relationships, transfer tools and techniques, and facilitators such as co-location in distinct ways, all leading to the acceptance of the transferred knowledge.The paper contributes to the further development of configurational thinking on project-level knowledge transfer and learning. It concludes with several implications for practitioners and policymakers

    In deze eerste kroniek in Milieu & Recht over mondiale waardeketens en duurzaamheidgeven geven wij een overzicht van de actuele stand van zaken rondom deze thematiek, met nadruk op de juridische vraagstukken en recente ontwikkelingen in Nederland, de Europese Unie (EU) en daarbuiten. Daarbij nemen wij de actualiteit als vertrekpunt en geven wij waar nodig een korte terugblik. Na een inleidende beschouwing over het begrip ‘mondiale waardeketen’ (par. 2), behandelen wij vijf pijlers die samen het juridische speelveld bepalen: duurzaamheidsrapportage (par. 3), passende zorgvuldigheid (par. 4), duurzame corporate governance (par. 5), handelspraktijkenrecht (par. 6) en rechtspraak over aansprakelijkheid in de keten (par. 7). Afgesloten wordt met enkele beschouwende opmerkingen (par. 8)

    "Small data": Inference with occasionally observed states

    We study the estimation of dynamic economic models for which some of the state variables are observed only occasionally by the econometrician—a common problem in many fields, ranging from marketing to finance to industrial organization. If those occasional state observations are serially correlated, the likelihood function of the model becomes a high-dimensional integral over a nonstandard domain. We generalize the recursive likelihood function integration procedure (RLI; Reich, 2018) to incorporate the occasional observations, enabling likelihood-based inference in such estimation problems. In extensive Monte Carlo studies, we demonstrate the favorable properties of the proposed method for identifying all model parameters and compare it to alternative methods

    Over the past three decades, Italian thought has emerged as a major field within continental philosophy. But what are the latest developments since Italian theory rose to a peak of popularity in the 2000s? This book offers an accessible and incisive introduction to contemporary Italian thought, revealing above all its continued relevance to some of the most pressing political, social and ethical conflicts today.Broadening the idea of Italian thought beyond biopolitics, An Introduction to Contemporary Italian Thought engages with a number of leading and upcoming philosophers, including Silvia Federici, Rosi Braidotti, Donatella di Cesare, Emanuele Coccia, Sandro Mezzadra, Franco 'Bifo' Berardi and Federico Luisetti. It demonstrates how Italian theory resonates in a wide variety of current debates, from digital technology, pandemics and populism to cyberfascism, environmentalism and decolonization. This not only uncovers the fruitfulness of Italian philosophy but further allows for fresh perspectives on debates dominated by well-trodden and often dated arguments. In consideration of populism, for instance, this book does not so much examine Donald Trump but rather turns to Silvio Berlusconi and Giorgia Meloni, just as its discussions of the digitization of work look beyond Silicon Valley to working conditions in EU and Global South from the perspective of Italian (post)workerism, and the Anthropocene is considered in light of radical zoological egalitarianism as it emerges in contemporary Italian thought.Tackling head-on the complex and porous notion of what constitutes 'Italian thought', Christiaens, De Bloois and De Cauwer bring new understanding to contemporary Italian theory and, with it, novel perspectives on current critical issues

    In this paper a generic computational architecture for social interaction adaptivity and attunement is presented that was developed based on unification of a number of specific case studies addressed earlier. This architecture describes a generic multilevel multi-timescale adaptive dynamical system and is formalised and represented as a multi-order self-modeling network. It is shown how this architecture covers different earlier case studies addressing social interaction adaptivity and attunement subsuming synchrony- or homophily-induced adaptivity. Moreover, it is shown how based on it a new application to the design of bonding bots is realised that supports interpersonal emotion regulation via adaptive human-bot interaction and attunement

    Scheduling bidirectional battery charging with minimum (dis)charging thresholds

    Devices capable of bidirectional charging, such as electric vehicles and home batteries, play a crucial role in decentralized energy management (DEM) to help balance loads locally. Most methods for scheduling such assets assume that they can charge and discharge at any rate between given maximum rates. However, in practice (dis)charging at low rates close to zero is undesirable or even impossible due to technical limitations. Therefore, this paper presents a heuristic algorithm for scheduling bidirectional charging of batteries that takes into account minimum (dis)charging thresholds. We show that the resulting schedules generally have only a few time intervals where (dis)charging happens below the thresholds, which greatly improves upon common approaches for battery scheduling that ignore the thresholds. In particular, our approach computes optimal schedules satisfying the minimum threshold constraints for more than 70% of the considered problem instances
