The pain of suspecting and the comforts of knowing the worst
No full textWillful ignorance is often framed as a strategy for avoiding moral responsibility in social decision making. We propose a broader view: individuals also avoid or seek information in purely individual contexts as a way to regulate emotions. People may delay confronting themselves to useful, yet painful, truths, or, paradoxically, pursue distressing but useless information to relieve uncertainty. This duality reflects a strategic balance between the emotional costs of knowing and the psychological discomfort of not knowing. We review recent research illustrating how information avoidance and search serve both self-protection and moral regulation. Ultimately, willful ignorance is reframed as a dynamic emotion-regulation strategy that helps individuals navigate the tension between uncertainty, truth, and emotional endurance in both social and personal domains

No full textDe vennootschapsrechtelijke redelijkheid en billijkheid vervult een prominente rol in rechtspraak. Van deze norm maken rechters de afgelopen decennia op gevarieerde wijze stelselmatig gebruik om ondernemingsrechtelijkegeschillen te beslechten. Gezien het een open norm betreft, kan dit op uiteenlopende wijze geschieden. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat het voor partijen meteen ondernemingsrechtelijk geschil geen uitgemaakte zaak is of zij in overeenstemming met dan wel in strijd met de redelijkheid en billijkheid handelen. No full textReclamebureaus spelen als tussenschakel een belangrijke rol in de vormgeving en distributie van reclame-uitingen. Journalistiek werk van Follow the Money naar de rol van reclamebureaus in campagnes van leveranciers en grootverbruikers van fossiele brandstoffen heeft de vraag naar de juridische verantwoordelijkheden van deze bureaus in de reclameketen actueel gemaakt. Zowel handelaren als media kunnen onder omstandigheden verantwoordelijk zijn voor misleidende, oneerlijke of ongepaste reclame. Maar draagt ook het reclamebureau als tussenschakel een juridische verantwoordelijkheid voor de ongeoorloofde inhoud van reclames die zij maken en distribueren? Wat houdt die verantwoordelijkheid in? Leidt schending daarvan tot buitencontractuele aansprakelijkheid jegens de consumenten of handelaren tot wie de reclame gericht is? Zo ja, op basis waarvan en in welke mate precies? In dit artikel beantwoorden wij deze vragen en brengen wij de juridische verantwoordelijkheden van reclamebureaus in de reclameketen in kaart
Exploring the links between dissociative experiences, schemas, modes, and coping
No full textThis study explored the relationships between dissociative experiences, childhood trauma, maladaptive schemas, schema modes, and schema coping in a nonclinical sample. Three theoretical models were tested: (1) dissociative experiences resulting from schema mode activation, (2) dissociative experiences as an innate trait shaping schema coping, and (3) dissociative experiences arising from childhood trauma that influence coping strategies. Data from 401 Dutch psychology students were analyzed using path analyses to compare model fit. While all models showed good fit, Model 2 emerged as the best based on AIC and BIC values. This model linked dissociative experiences to avoidance and surrender coping styles and specific schema modes, such as the punitive parent and detached self-soother. Findings suggest dissociative experiences shape responses to schema-related stress through disengagement or immersion. Future research in clinical populations is recommended to further explore these dynamics and their therapeutic relevance.</p
Changes in psychological well-being across the transition to motherhood:Combining longitudinal and experience sampling methods
No full textBecoming a parent is a major life event associated with changes in psychological well-being. Existing research has often focused on the long-term development of trait well-being, leaving several gaps unaddressed. The current preregistered study employed three waves of intensive longitudinal data, including 7-day experience sampling data per wave, to investigate psychological well-being trajectories across the transition to motherhood. This approach provides novel, detailed insights into the timing of well-being changes (beyond traditional annual assessments), explores developments in different change indicators (mean-level, intraindividual variability, and individual differences), and various well-being components (affective, cognitive, and meaning in life) during this critical life transition. Following 161 first-time Dutch mothers from 20 weeks of pregnancy to 6 months postpartum, we observed increases in positive affect and meaning in life, along with decreases in life and relationship satisfaction that occurred between pregnancy and 2-3 months postpartum, with no significant changes afterward. In contrast, no significant changes in intraindividual variability in well-being (i.e., well-being fluctuations from moment to moment and day to day) were observed throughout the transition. There were both similarities and differences between the trajectories of trait and mean-state measures of different well-being outcomes, and additional exploratory analyses highlighted how various daily predictors (e.g., sleep quality, infant crying) became more (or less) important for mothers' well-being as they moved across the transition. The present study contributed to a better understanding of how the changes in a broad range of well-being components and other parameters unfold across the transition to motherhood.
