    Rattan is one of non timber product forest which is very famous in Indonesia. Indonesia has 350 from  the total of 600 rattan species in the world.  Indonesia rattan potential is getting more significant when it is known that among 350 species, only 53 species have been traded in both local and international market. Recently, Indonesia rattan industry facing some serious conditions, such as decreasing raw rattan production, dropping export volume and value of rattan product, and popping out the  imitation rattan.  Improper policy of government, by closing and opening the export the half-finished product of rattan without comprehensive consideration and analyzing become active catalyst of falling down for Indonesia rattan industry. Whereas in “Porter’s Five Forces” concept which was written by Michael Porter (1980), it was stated that the material component is one of five industrial environmental conditions. This concept can be used to analyze industry and company strategy development for looking at market interest.  Based on this concept, Indonesia has potential advantage as world’s main rattan supplier, because rattan can not be found in other place, except a little one.  In application stage, there are some steps can be done to return the glory of rattan, namely: assuring the market of round-semi finished rattan product is opened widely, guarantying the rattan product which has strong competitive value through design development and production cost efficiency, and national campaign to increase the usage of rattan product.Keywords: rattan, raw material, supplier, Porter’s five forces, marke

    Determining the stem volume of a tree, both a standing or felled tree, has long been a chronic problem for foresters, whereas, the need for an accurate estimate of wood volume is becoming more important. The use of Brereton’s formula in Indonesia, nowadays, was based solely on practical consideration in obtaining the data which comprise diameter of the large and small ends of logs; and logs length. However, the relative accuracy of this formula in comparison with other formulae still needs to be tested.  The result of this study by using 499 logs in PT Siak Raya Timber (Riau Province) showed that Centroid and Newton’s formulae have the best performance (seen from bias, accuracy and precision) for estimating the log volume of meranti in Sumatera. Bias of both formulae is around zero and very small, therefore it could be neglected. Huber’s formula tends to underestimate the volume, but it has still better performance than Brereton’s, Smalian’s and Bruce’s formulae. Brereton’s and Smalian’s formulae tend to overestimate the volume, whereas Bruce’s formula tends to underestimate. Deviation of errors for Brereton’s is consistently smaller than Smalian’s, and for Bruce’s is the largest one. But, precision for Brereton’s, Smalian’s and Bruce’s formulae are nearly the same

    This study describes a proper methode of seed storage to ensure merbau seeds remain viable after being separated from their host plant, and enable to germinate satisfactory by after planting. The aim of this research is to find out a proper methode of seed storage of merbau seeds. In implementing proper storage methode, three types of factors were tested, i.e : storage container (plastic, can, cloth bags, sack bags and bamboo box), storage room (air conditioned and room/ambient temperature); and storage durations (0, 2,4 and 6 months). The results showed that the most proper seed storage of merbau seeds was by using plastic bag container in an air conditioned room

    The study departs from the fact that the most difficult activity in constructing tree volume table is measurement of diameter and length of section of standing sample trees. Besides, the number of sample trees to represent the population is also another problem. This study examines the construction of the volume equation through taper function by reducing the quantity of sample trees. Validation was also conducted for testing the accuracy of such volume equation. The study found that the best taper function was the third order polynomial model i.e., d/D=f{(h/H),(h/H)2,(h/H)3. The volume equation, constructed using only three sample trees by such taper function (V=0.3573337D2H), has almost the same good performance to equivalent the best model (V=6.14 10-5D1.8249H1.0342), that was constructed using 30 sample tree.Key words: taper function, tree volume equation, validation, accuracy, precisio

    Private owned forest in Java already exists for decades. It was initially targeted for their own consumption. Studies by Faculty of Forestry of IPB in 1976 and UGM in 1977 revealed that70% of construction timber and 90% of fuelwood was supplied by private owned forest. Since then, much attention has been paid to private owned forests in terms of forestry policy, and those privateowned forests started growing into private owned timber business (POTB) along with the growth ofits market. The POTB involved many parties, where the private owned forest farmers is the main player in the business system but has not got optimum benefit. Beside that, in the whole, theperformance of POTB system has not yet been optimal, hence strategic bussiness need to be developed. The main objective of this study was to determine POTB structural model as component in developing the business. Hence, the study used Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM) method.The structure of POTB development system consisted of 9 elements and 86 sub elements where most of the sub elements is included in sector III, meaning there is structural problem on the whole elements. Hence, the problem will need to be solved simultaneously to develop healthy business system. In the implementation of POTB development system, it was suggested that government has to make priority of development target, based on the analysis result of the systemstructure

    The objective of this research is to find out the early information of optimum light intensity and highest mycorrhizal colonization on natural Ramin seedling which it includes in semitolerant plant. The research was conducted in Ramin Natural Forest of Sungai Pelunjung Labai, Sanggau District, West Kalimantan for a year. The results of the research show that there are correlations between light intensity with mycorrhizal colonization. Ramin seedling which grown under the light intensity 3190 – 9500 lux have high mycorrhizal colonization and their growth better than the other treatment. Meanwhile Ramin seedling which grown in closed area or in open area with light intensity less than 1670 lux and more than 10840 lux respectively have lower mycorrhizal colonization and their growth was lower.Key words: Ramón seedling  (G. bancnus), Light intensity and Mycorrhizal Fung

    Tanjung (Mimusops elengi) is a multipurpose tree species, besides the use of its wood for bridge, boat, floor, door, and furnitures, other parts of this tree such as root, leaves and bark, can be used for medicine. This species is one of tree species that potential be developed in planting programme. Tanjung seed has variation in weight and size that need information in how the variation will influence the germination and the seedling growth. The seed has been collected in Padang, West Sumatera. Research was done to examine the influence of seed size to the germination and physical quality of seedling by using the extracted seed. The seeds were divided into three parts in size including large, medium and small. The experiment design was completely ramdomized design. Every unit of the experiment consist of 3 replications that contain 100 seeds each replication for germination and 25 seedlings each replication for the growth of seedling. Sterilized medium for germination and the growth of seedling was mixed of soil and sand (v/v 1:1). The parameters to be observed were germination percentage and speed of germination, and height and diameter of seedling. The results indicated that for collection of tanjung (M. elengi) seeds should be done only at the large and medium size caused by the capability of the seed to grow to be seedling within 3 months in the nursery higher compared to the small size.

    Habitat Suitability of Javan Gibbon in Gunung Salak, West Java (Kesesuaian Habitat Owa Jawa di Gunung Salak, Jawa Barat)

    Objective of this study was to provide spatial information of Javan gibbon habitat suitability and distribution in Gunung (Mt.) Salak area for Management Authority of Mt. Halimun-Salak National Park. Informations on Javan gibbon distribution was collected through a number of survey during December 2005–June 2006 in Kawah Ratu (Parakan Salak, Sukabumi), Pondok Wisata Cangkuang (Cidahu, Sukabumi), and Bobojong Village (Bogor). Twenty two groups were identified using direct count and triangle count method from over 47 identified positions. Habitat suitability was formulated based on10 ecogeographical variables (criteria), consisting of forest type (primary forest, secondary forest, low-land forest, and submontane forest), slope (0–15%, 15–45%, >45%), and distance to non-forested land, river/water body, and road/tracks. The result showed that Mt. Salak consisted of 13.20% (17.53 km2), 26.25% (34.86 km2), 19.40% (25.77 km2), 4.16% (5.53 km2), and 20.17% (26.78 km2) of high-suitable, suitable, moderate suitable, less and low suitable level subsequently, and 12.69 km2 or 9.56% was not suitable for Javan gibbon habitat. It was also revealed that that 3 and 9 groups were living in high suitable and suitable habitat respectively; 13 groups in moderate suitable, while for each less and low suitable habitat, 2 Javan gibbon groups lived in
