Offline : Finding Yourself In The Age Of Distractions

    No full text
This collection of reflections is to remind us of some of the things we can turn our distracted minds to, when we can direct our attention to what are in front of us, above us, and more importantly, within us, using all the senses that we were all born with. They are a rediscovery of some of the things we have forgotten how to do or have put aside in favour of our allconsuming electronic toys, and an attempt to help us reconnect once more with our senses and our natural gifts. So, why not put your smart phones, tablets, games, gadgets and anything with a screen, down for a few minutes. Take a deep breath and look up. Because at the end of the day, it is not just any journey we are making, but a journey to discover and appreciate who we are and what makes us human

    Ambient Assisted Living

    No full text
This book documents the state of the art in the field of ambient assisted living (AAL), highlighting the impressive potential of novel methodologies and technologies to enhance well-being and promote active ageing. It covers a broad range of topics, with sections on technological sensors and platforms, social robotics for assistance, assistance and care applications, health and medical support methodologies and technologies, as well as the analysis, modelling and design of AAL services. The book comprises a selection of the best papers presented at the 8th Italian Forum on Ambient Assisted Living (ForitAAL 2017), which was held in Genoa, Italy, in June 2017 and brought together researchers, technology teams and professional associations, as well as representatives of the Italian regions and advisors to the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, with the goal of developing a consensus on how to improve provisions for the elderly and impaired. The respective contributions offer valuable insights into how the latest advances can help address the needs of the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. They also underscore the need for AAL to continue moving toward multidisciplinary integration, so as to embrace the various disciplines that place the user of services at the centre of the design process

Drones as Cyber-Physical Systems: Concepts and Applications for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

    No full text
This book introduces the concept of using drones as a teaching tool to explore the fundamental principles, technology and applications of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). A short introduction sets CPS in the context of the 4th industrial revolution, and describes various CPS technologies including self-driving cars, commercial intelligent drones and mobile robots, in which artificial intelligence routinely supports smarter decision-making. The core of the book then focuses on commercially available drones, the only available system offering the advantage of cyber-physical bridging through 3D autonomous dynamic flying in classroom conditions. Chapters describe drone technology, including location sensors and imaging systems. CPS theory is explained through typical drone flying procedures and do-it-yourself (DIY) aerial photography in which communication between sensors, actuators and controllers occurs through cyber-physical bi-directional bridging. This book opens new possibilities in fostering 4th industrial revolution literacy, introducing relevant examples from readily available equipment, making core elements of cyber-physical bridging accessible. It is aimed primarily at those students who have an interest in CPS, drones and those from disciplines that are concerned with spatial information

    Work-Life Balance in Construction

    No full text
The book presents the latest studies on the work–life balance of millennial (also known as Generation Y) building professionals in Singapore and South Korea. Its main goal is to compare and contrast the workplace attitudes of millennials, and to provide guidelines that help supervisors in the construction industry manage their employees’ expectations regarding work–life balance. Accordingly, it explains and links various principles regarding work–life conflicts, work–life enrichments and the work–life interface. Furthermore, the book introduces readers to coping strategies, a dimension that has not yet been explored substantially and has the potential to contribute significantly to the study and understanding of work–life balance. The book makes recommendations for the top management on assigning a capable leader to drive the changes in the organization, and on empowering the leader to implement effective strategies for promoting work–life balance, especially for the millennials who are now playing an increasing central role in the global construction sector

    No full text
This book gathers the proceedings of the I-ESA’18 Conference, which was organised by the Fraunhofer IPK, on behalf of the European Virtual Laboratory for Enterprise Interoperability (INTEROP-VLab) and the DFI, and was held in Berlin, Germany in March 2018. It presents contributions ranging from academic research and case studies, to industrial and administrative experiences with interoperability that show how, in a globalised market scenario – where the ability to cooperate with other organisations efficiently is essential in order to remain economically, socially and environmentally cost-effective – the most innovative digitised and networked enterprises ensure that their systems and applications can interoperate across heterogeneous collaborative networks of independent organisations. Furthermore, the content addresses smart services, and the business impact of enterprise interoperability on organisations. Many of the papers in this ninth volume of the I-ESA Conference proceedings include examples and illustrations to help deepen readers’ understanding and generate new ideas. Offering a detailed guide to the state of the art in systems interoperability, the book will be of great value to all engineers and computer scientists working in manufacturing and other process industries, and to software engineers and electronic and manufacturing engineers working in academic settings
