    Floating photovoltaic solar energy decreases water temperature and near-surface dissolved oxygen

    Climate change and urbanization disrupt water body hydrothermal dynamics, altering aquatic ecosystems, water quality, and availability. Floating solar photovoltaic energy installations (FPVs) offer benefits by providing shade and generating renewable energy, supporting decarbonization goals. Despite limited studies on FPV impacts, we observed and analyzed three US water bodies with FPV installations. Results indicate an overall water cooling effect, on average, of 0.53 °C when FPV covers the majority of the water body, with maximum cooling reaching 2 °C during warmer summer months. Diel temperature ranges beneath the FPV were also lower, especially during high-temperature summer months. However, average dissolved oxygen levels were substantially lower (0.33–1.2 mg l−1) under FPV than in open water, possibly posing challenges to maintaining a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Our results reveal FPV’s potential as a passive mitigation measure against warming waters

    Factors determining susceptibility to temporary threshold shift in humans : insights from concert attendance

    Noise exposure can induce temporary threshold shifts (TTS), typically assessed using pure-tone audiometry (PTA). The magnitude of TTS is influenced by noise attributes such as duration and intensity, but likely also by a number of personal factors influencing individual susceptibility. Most research on such factors has relied on experimentally induced TTS, which enables controlled exposures but cannot generate substantial TTS without raising ethical concerns. This study explored an alternative paradigm, measuring TTS in 51 young adults immediately after attending a noisy concert. Potential predictors included self-reported noise exposure in the weeks preceding the event, hypothesized to have a “conditioning” effect that mitigates TTS, as well as sex and skin tone, since female sex hormones and higher melanin levels may have otoprotective effects. Temporary auditory shifts were measured primarily using PTA at 3–6 kHz, with supplementary assessments via distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), extended high-frequency (EHF) audiometry, and self-reported tinnitus. Pre-registered hypotheses predicted reduced TTS with higher prior noise exposure, female sex, and darker skin tones. Results revealed robust shifts in PTA, modest shifts in DPOAEs, and increased tinnitus reports, but no shifts in EHF measures. Regression analyses showed non-significant trends aligning with the conditioning noise and sex hypotheses, but not skin tone. The pre-and-post-concert paradigm proved effective, with high participant engagement and compliance during late-night testing. This methodology shows promise for future studies on TTS susceptibility, and recommendations are provided to refine its implementation

    This chapter engages with subtitles and streaming, as it presents a critical consideration of the cultural politics of Welsh-Anglo translation through a reading of the “Tywysog Cymru” episode of the Netflix series The Crown. This sees the chapter go back and forth between Shakespeare’s Richard II and its use in The Crown, and between how discourses of Englishness spanning the reigns of the two Queens Elizabeth have positioned Wales and the Welsh language. In the course of considering issues of translation and access, the author reflects on her own experience of arriving at university in Wales as a monolingual English-speaking student, and The Crown’s rendering of spoken Welsh into English subtitles

    Family business research : The next generation

    The first quarter of the 21st century has seen significant advancements in family business scholarship. While many scholars have sought to develop a singular “theory of the family firm,” most research has instead focused on understanding how salient management and entrepreneurship theories operate within family firms, thereby enriching our knowledge of the heterogeneity of this business type. This introduction to the special collection of papers from the 2024 Theories of Family Enterprise Conference integrates and expands multiple theoretical frameworks examined within family firms, reviews and synthesizes their contributions, and extends their implications for the broader family firm literature, while also offering multiple directions for future research. Further, the seven articles in this special collection help to further unpack the heterogeneity of this business type and shed light on the advances being made from a theoretical perspective for understanding family businesses in this next generation of scholarly inquiry

    Relational Art-Informed Learning in English for Global Communication Education : A Japanese Higher Education Context

    Grounded on Social Practice Theory and employing multi-mixed methods research (MMMR), this study aims to identify essential capacities for global communication (GCCs), effects of relational art-informed learning (RAIL) on student practice of the GCCs, and implications of the above results to an English language education programme at a Top Global University in Japan. Based on a systematic synthesis of English as a global language research, the study identifies seven GCCs in three functional categories: Translanguaging, Knowledge Contribution, Digital Communication, Navigation through Conceptualisation and Application as strategic GCCs, Translingual Identity Development and Relationship Building as comprehensive GCCs, and De/Re-Construction of Symbolic Power as the fundamental GCC. The synthesised quantitative and qualitative data shows that RAIL has strong effects on student practice of Relationship Building and De/ReConstruction of Symbolic Power, with Knowledge Contribution and Navigation through Conceptualisation and Application as key strategic GCC practices. Through RAIL, the students wove their daily, essentially translingual/transmodal relational communication practices into formal English language education, creating a social interstice that is open to both formal education and their communication practice. On the other hand, RAIL is limited in expanding Digital Communication, which needs a specific instructional attention, and Translanguaging, which requires a lingua-culturally diverse learning environment. Implications of this study to the English language education programme is to enact translingua-cultural learning and relational communication across the programme. The enactment will foster student capacities for global communication by dynamically decentring and recentring different lingua-cultures while learning. It will also enable collaboration between programme members to realise the faculty’s fundamental humanistic education principle in English language classrooms beyond the pursuit of management efficiency

    Weakly supervised anomaly detection for resonant new physics in the dijet final state using proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    An anomaly detection search for narrow-width resonances beyond the Standard Model that decay into a pair of jets is presented. The search is based on 139 fb − 1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV recorded during 2015–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is optimized without a particular signal model and aims to be sensitive to a broad range of new physics. It uses two different machine learning strategies to estimate the background in different signal regions. In each region, a weakly supervised classifier is trained to distinguish this background model from data. The analysis focuses on events with high transverse momentum jets reconstructed as large-radius jets. The mass and substructure of these jets are used as inputs to the classifiers. After a classifier-based selection, the distribution of the invariant mass of the two jets is used to search for potential local excesses. The model-independent results of both the anomaly detection methods show no signs of significant local excesses. In addition to model-independent results, a representative set of signal models is injected into the data, and the sensitivity of the methods to these scenarios is reported
