Holding onto the Social Context : Issues of Identity and Power in Personality Disorders
This thesis critically examines how the diagnostic construct of Personality Disorder interacts with the sociocultural context in which they are situated. It comprises three sections: a systematic scoping review, an empirical research paper, and a critical appraisal. The scoping review mapped 61 publications exploring the intersection of personality disorders (PDs) with gender, sexuality, and relationship-diverse identities. Findings revealed a narrow, predominantly US-based methodological landscape focused on prevalence and diagnostic trends, signalling the need for group-specific systematic reviews. Conceptualisations clustered around internal predispositions, sociocultural factors, or diagnostic bias, underscoring the necessity of situating assessment within its sociocultural context and revising diagnostic tools. In many cases, PD diagnoses appeared inappropriate once systemic oppression, discrimination, and trauma were fully considered. Building on these findings, the empirical study employed a constructivist grounded theory-informed approach to investigate how power is enacted and experienced in the care of individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Analysis of nine participants’ accounts produced a conceptual model showing how macro-level discourses and everyday clinical practices intersect to shape identity, access to care, and wellbeing. The diagnosis itself emerged as a form of epistemic power, legitimising stigma, undermining credibility, and constraining therapeutic possibilities. Recommendations include structural reform and a fundamental shift in service responses to those diagnosed with BPD. The critical appraisal reflects on theoretical, methodological, and reflexive considerations underpinning the research. Across all sections, the thesis highlights the entrenched harms of PD diagnoses, exposes the systemic reproduction of stigma and marginalisation, and calls for relational, context-sensitive, and identity-affirming models of care. It further contends that dismantling the PD construct may ultimately be necessary to overcome the inequities it perpetuates
Bayesian model averaging for partial ordering continual reassessment methods
Summary: Phase I clinical trials are essential to bringing novel therapies from chemical development to widespread use. Traditional approaches to dose-finding in Phase I trials, such as the ‘3 + 3’ method and the continual reassessment method (CRM), provide a principled approach for escalating across dose levels. However, these methods lack the ability to incorporate uncertainty regarding the dose-toxicity ordering as found in combination drug trials. Under this setting, dose levels vary across multiple drugs simultaneously, leading to multiple possible dose-toxicity orderings. The CRM for partial ordering (POCRM) extends to these settings by allowing for multiple dose-toxicity orderings. In this work, it is shown that the POCRM is vulnerable to ‘estimation incoherency’ whereby toxicity estimates shift in an illogical way, threatening patient safety and undermining clinician trust in dose-finding models. To this end, the Bayesian model averaged POCRM (BMA-POCRM) is formalized. BMA-POCRM uses Bayesian model averaging to take into account all possible orderings simultaneously, reducing the frequency of estimation incoherencies. We derive novel theoretical guarantees on the estimation coherency of the POCRM and BMA-POCRM. The effectiveness of BMA-POCRM in drug combination settings is demonstrated through a specific instance of estimate incoherency of POCRM and simulation studies. The results highlight the improved safety, accuracy, and reduced occurrence of estimate incoherency in trials applying the BMA-POCRM relative to the POCRM model
Euclid preparation LXXIV. : Euclidised observations of Hubble Frontier Fields and CLASH galaxy clusters
We present HST2EUCLID, a novel Python code to generate Euclid realistic mock images in the HE, JE, YE, and IE photometric bands based on panchromatic Hubble Space Telescope observations. The software was used to create a simulated database of Euclid images for the 27 galaxy clusters observed during the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) and the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program. Since the mock images were generated from real observations, they incorporate, by construction, all the complexity of the observed galaxy clusters. The simulated Euclid data of the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1−2403 were then used to explore the possibility of developing strong lensing models based on the Euclid data. In this context, complementary photometric or spectroscopic follow-up campaigns are required to measure the redshifts of multiple images and cluster member galaxies. By Euclidising six parallel blank fields obtained during the HFF program, we provide an estimate of the number of galaxies detectable in Euclid images per deg2 per magnitude bin (number counts) and the distribution of the galaxy sizes. Finally, we present a preview of the Chandra Deep Field South that will be observed during the Euclid Deep Survey and two examples of galaxy-scale strong lensing systems residing in regions of the sky covered by the Euclid Wide Survey. The methodology developed in this work lends itself to several additional applications, as simulated Euclid fields based on HST (or JWST) imaging with extensive spectroscopic information can be used to validate the feasibility of legacy science cases or to train deep learning techniques in advance, thus preparing for a timely exploitation of the Euclid Survey data
The First Anointing of a Scottish king : The Inauguration and Consecration of David II in 1331
In November 1331, David II became the first Scottish king to be anointed during his inauguration at Scone Abbey, marking a pivotal moment in the history of Scottish kingship. This article offers the first comprehensive analysis of the significance of this ritual, exploring how unction transformed the spiritual and political status of the monarchy in late medieval Scotland. Drawing on contemporary English and Scottish chronicles, governmental records, papal correspondence, and an overlooked anonymous account, it argues that David’s anointing signalled a profound shift in how royal authority was conceptualised and communicated. The rite placed Scottish kingship on equal footing with that of England, redefining internal power dynamics and external perceptions of sovereignty. Employing a constructivist framework rooted in the work of Bruce Kapferer and Edward Schieffelin, the article reconstructs the 1331 inauguration, analysing its structure, performers, and performative elements. The study reveals how ritual innovations—especially the inclusion of liturgy and ecclesiastical celebrants—were used as instruments of political theatre by the Bruce dynasty. In doing so, it underscores the role of ritual in medieval statecraft and highlights how the spectacle of David II’s inauguration asserted Scottish legitimacy and independence in a contested geopolitical landscape
‘Defence Before Beauty’? : Infrastructure and the operational landscape of Fylingdales early warning station
Landscape architecture is frequently the unwitting camouflage in the visual amelioration of infrastructure. Large-scale designed landscapes became commonplace in post-war Britain as society modernised – motorways, power stations, reservoirs, gas and oil terminals, all had landscape architects employed by the state in attempts to mitigate against the disruption of development. Moreover, landscape architecture was used to project an image of responsible landowners. Desirably invisible, RAF Fylingdales, is a British Cold War listening station in a National Park in northern England. The site raises debates around perceived ‘natural’ landscapes, tensions between legislation for beauty and ecology versus demands for militarised security, and the actions of campaign bodies. Fylingdales is one visible, albeit deliberately obscured, cursor of an invisible global network of defence systems. These spaces occupied discrete, remote locations, often in sensitive and iconic landscapes, often assuming similarly iconic forms. The original complex of 1962 was composed of three 40m diameter geodesic domes. It was rebuilt 1989-92 in its current tetrahedron structure. Using archival research concerning the planned landscape at Fylingdales, and wider context of the National Park, this paper explores the ‘operational landscape’ as a ‘technical land’ with entanglements within, and well beyond, its physical borders. Considering the landscape architecture as a real and metaphorical ‘cloaking device’ that attempted to mitigate the protests of various campaign groups, we examine the relationships between the visible and the invisible human and non-human actors in a series of complex networks and question a perceived role of beauty in the context of defence infrastructure
