    No full text
This article aims to analyze the complexity of interactions between Bajo fishermen communities and their sea environment in the form of coral reef resource management in Takabonerate in the past time by application of the paradigm of communalism in human ecology. The question proposed is how to construct the complexity of the interaction between Bajo fishermen communities and their sea environment in the context of belief systems, and socio-economic and political institutions in the early time of their arrival in Takabonerate archipelago up to the of 1940s. The article's material are taken from field research reports in which the data/information was gained by depth interviews and observation according to the focus of study and the chosen approach. The Bajo fishermen communities under study are concentrated in the village of Rajuni Island (as the center of the old Bajo Kingdom). This analysis indicates that the management patterns of sea environment and coral reef resource use applied by Bajo fishernen communities of Takabonerate are based on models of the great Panglima Menteng institution. The management is characterized by strong collective order; the sea resource use management reflects the intersubjective relations between human societies and natural/sea environment spirits; equity of household socio-economic welfare; the constantly controlled condition of environment and the balanced natural resource use. Keywords: management of coral reef resource use, Bajo community, communalism paradigm &nbsp

    No full text
This paper argues that in the era of decentralization of developmental democratization at the local level through forums involving citizens have not yet formally involved strategic roles of women. The author reviews on how women’s strategic role on the local level has not been entirely met by mechanisms of formal channels at the village level. Taking a case study in Indramayu, the author outlines issues of democratization through various citizen forums that show problems of political participation that turn out to limit the role of women. The transformation of the public decision making structure on the local level should collaboratively involve aspirations of women who are still engaged in informal political context. &nbsp

Menyudahi Analogi Antropomorfisme: Mendamaikan Biologi, Sosiologi, dan Psikologi melalui Psikogenealogi Antropologi Kedaulatan Negara

It is quite often, wittingly or unwittingly, that people assume society, even the state, as person. They talk about society in a way as if it shares same attributes with human being: can be sick (as if it has body), can think (as if it has mind), can speak (as if it has mouth), for example. It is quite obvious that this gesture implies a view of society as an agglomeration of individuals. The problem arises around the legitimacy of this gesture: namely, to analogize the society as individuals always implies a logical leap. Things even get murkier when this gesture is applied even more to the way in which people recognize the state: as collectivities, as a “big-person.” This gesture, which has methodological impact, is what the author call ‘anthropomorphism analogy’. By doing what the author call psychogenealogy—a mixture of Lacanian psychoanalysis and Foucauldian genealogy, that is a way at seeing history as constituted by various contestation of materialization of desire—to the history of the modern state, namely, modern sovereign state, the author seeks to remedy this analogy with an objective account. The purpose is not to side with the analogy, but to prove that it is invalid not because it is scientifically inadequate, but that it is a true correspondence: state is person.   Keywords: Anthropomorphism analogy, state, sovereignty, psychogenealogy, desire, anxiet

This paper was written against a background of interest to trace the formation of sociological ways of thinking that tend to legitimize power in Indonesia. During the preparation, I found problems in the perspective commonly used in researching the formation process of knowledge; knowledge is considered a form of power. Such approach is problematic because it denies subjectivity – which includes cognitive activity and experiences that are owned only by the existence of the related – absolute in the process of both producing and reproducing knowledge. Yet this criticism isn’t easy to elaborate because the question is, how do we insert subjectivity when the origins of sociological thinking that we’re talking about is an effort to continue in a non-reflective way of sociology in the U.S. in the Cold War era, who’s way of thinking MENATURALISASI the existing social order and its ideology. Finally, I  placed Selo Soemardjan – a figure that became the center of this analysis because of his irreplaceable role in institutionalizing sociological ways of thinking (U.S.) in Indonesia – as a translator.  Quoting Bruno Latour’s view (1987), only with exploring the process of dissemination of knowledge as an activity of translation can we find energy that has been invisible all this time in a variety of knowledge analysises. For me, this concept helps reveal subjectivity that has been buried by views that place actors as passive mediums in the forming or spreading of knowledge that is more true or beneficial in preserving structure.   Keywords: Selo Soemardjan, knowledge, power, translation, subjectivity, sociological ways of thinkin

This article asks the question how Banda displaced from the Banda Islands due to colonization of Banda by the VOC in 1621, maintain their existence as a sustainable cultural group. Banda communities play an important role in maritime commerce in the eastern part of Indonesia at the beginning of the colonial period. They survive as one cultural group in two villages on the islands of Kei. The traditional songs of the two villages center on the sea voyage. The argument is that Banda people are mobilized by oral traditions that reveal the kinship ties of Banda people with their partners in commerce in distant lands. Key-words: oral poetry, Banda Eli Communities, cultural resistance &nbsp

Various endeavors to quest for ethnographic representation have been conducted to answer questions about authority and relationship between the ethnographer and its subject.  This quest brought about issues of collaboration and reflexivity as important themes in the visual anthropology discourse. This paper is an effort to expose our experiences in doing anthropological research using documentary video. Collaboration, reflexivity and complicity are concepts that become our concern in a research project in Indramayu. What we did is a kind of possibility to create  ethnographic representation through visual medium.   Keywords: collaboration, reflexivity, ethnographic representation, documentary vide
