    Living Networks: re-imagining regional communities and their heritage

    Working from the periphery on Djaara Country, Castlemaine Regional Victoria,140km out of Melbourne, our proposal starts from the centre of this old gold mining town and seeks to document and capture our more-than-architectural endeavour. For this narrative, the architect’s business is as much about observing and taking note, revealing and paying heed to the invisible and often intangible systems of just what’s there now. Drawing from a Kraussian expanded architectural field, we have evolved a design process of building site knowledge and context that uncovers the histories, peripheral stories, forgotten memories and patterns of occupation. In seeking solutions to accommodate a growing community, to house those now homeless and to give more agency to our Indigenous people, we reflect on currently accepted design strategies and propose an alternative model that rethinks property boundaries and ownership, occupancy and vacancy regulations.  Our work has been resisting the additions of new buildings and instead foregrounds what already exists, to recast the accumulations of built fabric and of its interstitial landscapes as inherently value filled. In doing this we reveal an eclectic town fabric, a mix of industrial, Victorian and 20th century material that holds traces of past occupation but also reflects a kind of vibrant eclecticism that speaks more to a possible future than carbon-hungry developer-led solutions. Our essay will build an alternative spatial narrative that makes visible a process that tracks and traces the voices of those invisible and marginalized protagonists as well as the value of existing built fabric. What we aim to construct is not more built stuff, but a more robust future that accepts what is already there; the ordinary, the unremarkable as well as remarkable. Our conclusions and contributions are as much in spatialising and making active – sensible – those forgotten and intangible voices and peripheral built heritages.</p

    Managing and Leveraging Emotions for Teaching and Learning: Gendered Perspectives

    This chapter examines how emotions can be effectively managed (i.e., subdued) and leveraged (i.e., leaning into rather than suppressing emotions) to enhance teaching and learning. Specific consideration is given to gendered emotion management by drawing on research in the sociology of emotions and education. Key topics include conceptualizing emotions as reflexive practices rather than solely individual experiences, moving beyond simplistic dichotomous notions of “positive” and “negative” emotions, the importance of emotional awareness, embracing discomfort as a catalyst for growth, and developing strategies to persist through emotional challenges in teaching and learning. We consider how emotions shape classroom climates and teacher-student relationships. This chapter argues for an approach that views emotions, not as obstacles to be suppressed, but as valuable resources that can be skillfully leveraged to create more engaging, equitable, and transformative learning environments.</p

    Is construction my industry of choice? Examining the factors affecting career choice decision-making of young workers

    Purpose: Work factors affecting the career intentions of young construction workers in structured traineeship programs are not well understood despite the increasing use of such programs as pathways to career entry. To address this gap, work factors affecting the career intentions of participants in a construction-related traineeship program were investigated. Design: A questionnaire comprising of measures of organisational fairness, organisation inclusion, time for life, job characteristics, and intention to pursue a career in construction was administered to 136 Australian trainees. Bivariate and logistic regression analysis explored the relationships and combined effects of work factors on career intention. Findings: Trainees’ perceptions of the needs-supplies component of person-job (P-J) fit were a strong and significant predictor of their intention to pursue a career in construction on completion of the traineeship program. Specifically, the greater the extent to which trainees perceived a job in construction would satisfy their needs, desires or preferences, the more likely they were to indicate they would pursue a career in construction. Originality: The instrument used to measure subjective needs-supplies (P-J) fit enabled a fine-grained analysis of job characteristics considered important by trainees and their perceived availability in construction. Job characteristics relating to having work-life balance and health and wellbeing were of high importance but were perceived to be low in availability in construction jobs. Practical implications: Findings provide new insights that can help to improve the industry’s ability to attract and retain school leavers in employment which is especially critical in light of the skills shortage facing the Australian construction sector.</p

    Authenticating the integration of the SDGs into a higher education fashion program

    Integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into higher education programs, rather than treating them as add-ons, is essential for fostering genuine engagement with sustainability and driving transformational change across industries. However, evaluating whether the SDGs are meaningfully integrated into a program—and validating this integration—remains a challenge. This article presents an approach to authenticate the integration of the SDGs into higher education fashion curricula, using the Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles (Sustainable Innovation) at RMIT University, Australia, as the case study. Through cooperative inquiry, we employed a multi-level mapping approach to validate the SDG integration. This included a university-wide SDG mapping process using Elsevier’s SDG keyword approach, program-level analysis, and a course-specific evaluation based on staff self-assessments. Our findings revealed differences in what the University high-level mapping identified, compared to the program staff self-assessments. This provided a two-way validation for both the SDG mapping exercise and the curriculum. It also became a useful reflective tool for program staff, as it highlighted how courses within a program are interconnected through the SDGs. The approach is not only applicable within fashion education but could be applied to other programs and disciplinary contexts to authenticate SDGs integration and to support ongoing curriculum development.</p

    Exploring trajectories in supply chain integration: a systematic analysis of emerging themes

    The purpose of this research is to holistically examine the development of supply chain integration (SCI) domain over the preceding economic cycle to project emerging themes that will shape the trajectory of future research. We conduct a systematic literature review to explore the trajectories in SCI domain with articles retrieved from aggregating databases. A total of 152 articles, which satisfied the evaluation and selection process, were analysed. The analysis reveals the intricate correlation between SCI and performance and highlights the progressively pivotal role of blockchain, artificial intelligence, and environmental exigency in SCI adoption. Our findings suggest the need for further research into the impact of SCI on corporate social responsibility performance and on SCI adoption practice in specific industries. Tiered sample collection research is encouraged in this field. However, this paper only included high–ranking peer-reviewed publications. Future SLR papers can incorporate wider sources of data to include meaningful information. By identifying and elucidating key themes, this study offers valuable insights that can inform and guide future research directions in the field of SCI.</p

    A short term multistep forecasting model for photovoltaic generation using deep learning model

    Developed countries have substantial investments in renewable energy currently, particularly Photovoltaics (PV), for achieving net-zero emissions. But PV generation is highly volatile and hence achieving supply-demand balance is challenging. Robust forecasting models will help PV integration and penetration into the grid, making sure that there is an adequate supply to match the demand, ensuring reliability and stability of power systems. In this paper, a deep learning model is developed for PV generation multistep forecasting using a small subset of weather variables with a 15-minute resolution, with very low computation time. The forecasts very closely align with the actual generation, with a Normalized Mean Absolute Error (nMAE) of 0.04, much less than 1 kWh in terms of error in forecast generation. Direct and multioutput forecasting are combined here. Comparisons with Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) show performance improvement, by ∼15% compared to LSTM and ∼17% compared to GRU in terms of average nMAE. The model can be used in urban environments for short term forecasting. Also, if an accurate forecast is available, PV asset owners can plan their generation better when they export power back into the grid, make better bids in the energy markets, increase their revenues and eventually increase the share of renewables in the energy market.</p

    Public pathways to influencing pro‐nature decision‐making in government: A case study in southeastern Australia

    The biodiversity crisis calls for more collective effort, and a close examination of the tools available to effect change. We documented insider knowledge into how pro‐nature decision‐making can be influenced in the Australian state of Victoria, focusing on the role of public advocacy targeting government. We interviewed 12 experts who currently or previously held influential roles in government or advocacy‐focused environmental non‐government organizations (ENGOs) and used thematic analysis to explore their responses. Experts described influence from individuals, grassroots groups, or ENGOs, and factors shaping success. These included attributes of the decision‐making context, having resources and commitment to see out long‐term change, having relevant networks, and being able to act when opportunities arise. Barriers described included lack of environmental literacy among the public and some decision‐makers, biodiversity concern being crowded out by climate change concern, and the difficulty of shifting from incremental to systemic change. Understanding these factors can better equip advocates to have impact. Democratic governments recognize that societies make progress where there is two‐way exchange between public and state, so should foster public pathways toward political engagement in conservation.</p

    Exploring the Tourism and Economic Growth Relationship in Vietnam: A Cointegration Analysis with Model-Specific Structural Breaks

    In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis to examine the resilience of tourism in Vietnam since the Doi Moi period. Using an augmented Solow framework, data from 1986 to 2020, and the ARDL approach, we estimate the long-run and short-run effects, whilst accounting for model-specific structural breaks. To provide stronger validation and robustness of the results, we estimate eight models under four cases. We start with the base model, which includes tourism and capital (in per worker terms), and then augment it with factors that are carefully identified from the literature. The additional factors include urbanisation, financial development, trade openness, foreign direct investment (FDI), information and communication technology (ICT), and natural resources. We find that capital accumulation and tourism (in per worker terms) remain positive drivers of growth in all the estimations. Results from alternative models also highlight the pro-growth effects of urbanisation, financial development, and trade openness. A positive association between carbon emissions and economic growth is also noted, indicating the existing production–consumption setup, the pace of environmental harvesting, and the weak decoupling effects that could lead to negative externality in the long run. Factors like technology, natural resource rents, and FDI show negative effects on growth as well. Moreover, by examining the causality dynamics, the study further contributes to broader policy discussion. Hence, policies targeted to promote the growth process, and the advancement of the economy, should continue supporting capital accumulation, tourism development, urbanisation, financial development, and international trade. However, future economic policies should cautiously address emissions, natural resource use, and re-evaluate the gains from foreign direct investment (FDI) to ensure growth remains sustainable. With tourism and capital accumulation at the core of this study, the findings of this study are intended to generate deeper policy discussions on resource allocations and the need to harness and/or rely on contemporary sources of growth to promote the sustainable development of Vietnam.</p

    Changes in physical impairments in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome following arthroscopic surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Abstract Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a motion-related condition causing hip pain in young active adults. Physical impairment measures of body function include objective and reproducible measures of hip mobility, muscle power, and movement coordination. Limited data on physical impairments and the effects of arthroscopic surgery exist. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate changes in physical impairments in those with FAIS, pre- and post-arthroscopic surgery. Six databases were searched for English-language studies reporting on pre- and postoperative physical impairments using physical outcome measures. Reporting quality was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) framework, the Cochrane Risk of Bias tools and Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS); for pooled data [standardized mean difference (SMD), and 95% confidence intervals (CI)]. Seventeen studies were included (two randomized controlled trials; fifteen pre/postintervention studies), varying from low-critical risk of bias, low-moderate on the MINORS, and very low reporting quality using the GRADE tool. Postoperatively, participants with FAIS walked with a higher peak hip flexion moment [SMD 0.5, 95% CI (0.12–0.88); heterogeneity I2 = 0%, P = .82] and reduced external rotation range [SMD −0.68, 95% CI (−1.34 to −0.01); heterogeneity I2 = 61%, P = .05]. Surgery increased participant hip flexion moment and impulse, hip strength and faster gluteus maximus contraction time. Patients demonstrated reduced hip extension, abduction and adduction angles during walking gait, and peak hip extension moments during gait and squatting. While this review found some physical impairments changed postoperatively, further research into specific subgroups of FAIS would enhance understanding and inform rehabilitation programs and optimize patient outcomes.
