Date Labelling and Storage Advice Collective Intelligence Workshops: Position Paper
Food waste is a significant issue, both environmentally and economically. Effective packaging with clear, consistent date labelling and storage advice plays a crucial role in reducing food waste. However, the current systems for storage advice and date labelling in Australia are unclear and contribute significantly to household food waste. There is a clear need for better, more consistent date labels and storage advice to assist consumers in their food management.
This report presents findings from seven Collective Intelligence Workshops conducted with Consumer and Stakeholder groups as part of the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (EFW CRC) Project 1.2.4, National Date Labelling and Storage Advice (Phase 1). This research aimed to explore how date labelling and storage advice systems could be improved to reduce food waste from both consumer and food industry perspectives. Additionally, this research examined barriers and facilitators for change, to better understand the wider changes needed to improve existing labelling systems.</p

An exploratory analysis of forest fine fuel consumption and accumulation using forest inventory data and fire history
Background Estimating changes in fine fuel loads (FFL) is essential for carbon monitoring and fire management. Field measurements of post-fire fuel response are challenging, leading to reliance on generalised fuel types in operational models. Aims This study presents a proof-of-concept for estimating fine fuel consumption and accumulation by integrating forest inventory and fire records, aiming to refine fuel dynamics estimates and enhance current practices. Methods We estimated FFL changes across vertical strata in southeast Australian eucalypt forests, considering burn severity, fire type and forest cover. Fuel consumption was estimated by correlating pre-fire observations with combustion factors defined by burn severity. Fuel accumulation was predicted using modified Olson models with dynamic input parameters. Key results Wildfires typically occurred in forests with higher FFL and consumed more fuels than prescribed burns. Closed forests experienced greater fuel loss compared with open and woodland forests. Increasing fire severity led to lower decomposition rates and a longer time to reach pre-fire FFL, with denser forests showing higher accumulation rates. Conclusions Integrating forest inventory and fire history data offers valuable insights into fuel dynamics, potentially enhancing existing fuel hazard models. Implications The approach is applicable in regions with mature forest inventories and advanced fire severity mapping.</p
Generative AI in Accounting Education: Evaluating ChatGPT's Role in Assessment and Skill Development
This study investigates the use of generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, in designing assessment aligned with the revised Bloom's taxonomy (RBT) for an undergraduate accounting program. Examining six courses across the program, the study evaluates ChatGPT's performance on 18 assessments, revealing its effectiveness in facilitating lower- to mid-order learning tasks but limited utility in higher-order learning contexts. ChatGPT emerges as a valuable tool for reinforcing foundational knowledge and skills essential for advancing to higher-order learning. This study highlights the potential of generative AI in enhancing accounting assessment design and offers strategies for its integration to develop students digital and professional skills.</p
Rain, Heat, Repeat: How Music Fans Are Experiencing Extreme Weather
In 2024-2025, Green Music Australia conducted polling to explore how climate change and extreme weather events are impacting music audiences in Australia. Through surveys at live music events and festivals across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania, we engaged with adiverse sample of 1155 attendees, spanning ages from 18 to over 60.The survey aimed to provide an initial snapshot of how, if at all, audience behaviour is shifting in response to climate impacts. We explored whether concerns about extreme weather are influencing ticket purchasing decisions, event attendance, and perceptions of government action on climate change. Participants were asked about their festival attendance habits, their awareness of climate-related festival cancellations, and how various weather conditions might affect their plans to attend live music events in the future.By centering the voices of music audiences, this data provides early insights into a growing challenge for the music industry and contributes to a broader conversation on its climateresilience. We hope these findings serve as a foundation for deeper investigations and inspire action from artists, event organisers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to safeguard live music in an era of increasing climate uncertainty.</p
Flatpack: Repacked: Research Project Summary Report
RMIT PlaceLab’s Flatpack: Repacked Research Project examined the behaviours and motivations of City of Melbourne residents regarding the acquisition, maintenance, and disposal of furniture. We explored these behaviours and motivations through a circular economy lens to identify current strengths in the circulation of furniture items and materials in the City of Melbourne, and to identify potential areas of improvement and provide relevant insights and reflections. Through an online survey, interviews and a field study of hard rubbish, we engaged with a range of community members to document consumer behaviours and perspectives, and quantify the issue of hard rubbish. We also explored the potential for discarded furniture to have a second life by engaging RMIT students to repair furniture items collected from hard rubbish, and showcased the outcome of these during a Floor Talk with the City of Melbourne.</p
A survey on security and privacy issues in wearable health monitoring devices
Recent developments in mobile computing power and wireless communication speeds have significantly improved the efficiency of medical systems. This paper focuses on passive wearable sensor devices, which are integral to noninvasive monitoring of physiological data in healthcare observation. Beyond data collection, some wearables play an active role in patient treatment, underscoring the critical importance of protecting their security and privacy. Breach in these areas can severely affect patient health. However, the distinctive characteristics of wearable technologies introduce unique security and privacy challenges, including the potential for unauthorized access to sensitive location, medical, and physiological data. This review delves into the security and privacy concerns associated with wearable devices and proposes potential remedies. Its value lies in providing insights for researchers and manufacturers, aiming to advance the development of safer and more effective wearable medical technologies.</p
The ‘Wear & Care’ Summary Report
We considered Brunswick’s future as an existing creative fashion district by exploring methods of fashion “rewilding” accessible to the community.We gathered locals, retailers, makers, creators, and researchers to learn about and encourage practices that mend, repair and share clothing, to build a local response towards a new fashion system.The future for Brunswick’s fashion district has the potential to create more accessible “rewilding” practices. We identified three potential opportunities related to community initiatives and activations, support for community “activators”, and storytelling and experience sharing. This summary also brought forward potential considerations such as funding and support for community repair initiatives.Together, we’re tackling real-world, urban challenges and seeking innovations that improve liveability, community resilience and connection.This summary will be shared with out local government and industry partners.
