Enhanced photoresponsivity in Bi2Se3 decorated GaN nanowall network-based photodetectors
Recently, highly responsive photodetectors which are capable of photodetection in a wide range of wavelength spectra are in great demand. To fulfil this, photodetectors formed using heterojunctions of multiple semiconducting materials gain a lot of interest as they cover a broad range of photodetection, and the built-in electric field developed at their interface helps to enhance photoresponse. Here, we have demonstrated a fascinating broadband metal-semiconductor-metal type photodetector (PD) by integrating sputtered Bi2Se3 with the laser molecular beam epitaxy (LMBE) grown GaN film and porous nanowall network on sapphire (0001) substrates. The fabricated photodetectors using a hybrid Bi2Se3/LMBE-GaN nanowall structure exhibit broadband characteristics with a high responsivity of 51.4 and 1.46 A/W when illuminating with the laser of wavelength 355 nm (UV) and 1064 nm (NIR), respectively. The enhanced UV responsivity and good response in the NIR region using Bi2Se3/GaN heterojunction nanostructures suggest futuristic application in dual-wavelength detector devices
Freeze-thaw stability of Pickering emulsion stabilized by modified soy protein particles and its application in plant-based ice cream
Pickering emulsions are of great interest to the food industry and their freeze-thaw stability important when used in frozen foods. Particles of soybean isolate (SPI) were heat treated and then crosslinked with transglutaminase (TG) enzyme to produce Pickering emulsions. The protein particles produced using unheated and uncrosslinked SPI (NSPI) was used as the benchmark. The mean particle size, absolute zeta potential, and surface hydrophobicity of protein particles produced using heat treatment and TG crosslinking (at 40 U/g) SPI (HSPI-TG-40) were the highest and substantially higher than those produced using NSPI. The thermal treatment of protein particles followed by crosslinking with TG enzyme improved the freeze-thaw stability of Pickering emulsions stabilized by them. The Pickering emulsions produced using HSPI-TG-40 had the lowest temperature for ice crystal formation and they had better freeze-thaw stability. The plant-based ice cream prepared by HSPI-TG-40 particle-stabilized Pickering emulsions had suitable texture and freeze-thaw stability compared to the ice cream produced using NSPI. The Pickering particles produced using heat treatment of SPI followed by crosslinking with TG (at 40 U/g) produced the most freeze-thaw stable Pickering emulsions. These Pickering particles and Pickering emulsions could be used in frozen foods such as ice cream
Effects of internal strategic resources and capabilities on service innovation
This study aims to enrich the extant literature by investigating the predictive ability of IT capability on service innovation in the luxury hotel sector, with the mediating roles of organizational responsiveness and organizational learning capability. The study also examines how the alignments between and among IT capability, organizational responsiveness, and organizational learning capability affect service innovation. Results of structural equation modeling using a sample of 237 luxury hotels indicate that IT capability is positively related to service innovation, and organizational responsiveness has a positive mediating effect in this relationship. In addition, organizational learning capability positively mediates the link between IT capability and organizational responsiveness. Notably, the alignments between and among IT capability, organizational responsiveness, and organizational learning capability all positively influence service innovation. A bootstrap analysis of another sample of 213 luxury hotels confirms the relationships between the variables. Application of antimicrobial nanocomposite film packaging on the postharvest quality and specific spoilage organisms of mushrooms (Russula virescens)
The use of biodegradable packaging films for post-harvest preservation of wild edible mushrooms is an eco-friendly method. In this study, the nanocomposite films were prepared based on poly (lactic acid) and mesoporous silica (2, 4 and 6 wt% based on polylactide) loaded with citral. The effects of nanocomposite film on the postharvest quality and specific spoilage bacteria of Russula virescens wild mushroom were evaluated. The results showed that firmness, weight loss, color, electrolyte leakage for Russula virescens treated with mesoporous silica loaded with citral based on poly (lactic acid) films were maintained compared to the control group. In particular, the 4% mesoporous silica loaded with citral group prolonged the freshness of mushroom by 6 days. Acinetobacter, Lactococcus, Weissella, Serratia, unclassified Enterobacteriaceae, and unclassified Gammaproteobacteria were identified as the main dominant bacteria. After 12 d of storage, the relative abundance of these bacterial for mushrooms packed by 4 wt% mesoporous silica loaded with citral based on poly (lactic acid) film was reduced, except Lactococcus. This revealed that the poly (lactic acid) film prepared by 4 wt% mesoporous silica loaded with citral could be used to extend the shelf life of Russula virescens
Implementation of Social Inclusion to Support Refugee Students’ Well-Being in Victoria, Australia: A Study of School Reports and Policies
This paper explores social inclusion approaches implemented by ten secondary schools in Victoria, Australia, to support refugee students’ well-being, as articulated in their policies, reports, and other published documents. Using an exploratory, qualitative research design, we found that all schools employed a holistic approach to implementing social inclusion programs for refugee students. This paper reports on the best practices and unique examples of social inclusion programs from all schools involved in the study
PANDORA: Deep Graph Learning Based COVID-19 Infection Risk Level Forecasting
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a global pandemic causes a massive disruption to social stability that threatens human life and the economy. An effective forecasting system is arguably important to provide an early signal of the risk of COVID-19 infection so that the authorities are ready to protect the people from the worst. However, making a good forecasting model for infection risks in different cities or regions is not an easy task, because it has a lot of influential factors that are difficult to be identified manually. To address the current limitations, we propose a deep graph learning model, called PANDORA, to predict the infection risks of COVID-19, by considering all essential factors and integrating them into a geographical network. The framework uses geographical position relationships and transportation frequency as higher order structural properties formulated by higher order network structures (i.e., network motifs). Moreover, four significant node attributes (i.e., multiple features of a particular area, including climate, medical condition, economy, and human mobility) are also considered. We propose three different aggregators to better aggregate node attributes and structural features, namely, Hadamard, Summation, and Connection. Experimental results over real data show that PANDORA outperforms the baseline methods with higher accuracy and faster convergence speed, no matter which aggregator is chosen
Mobility-aware and Privacy-protecting QoS Optimization in Mobile Edge Networks
With the rapid development of 5G technologies, the demand of quality of service (QoS) from edge users, including high bandwidth and low latency, has increased dramatically. QoS within a mobile edge network is highly dependent on the allocation of edge users. However, the complexity of user movement greatly challenges edge user allocation, leading to privacy leakage. In addition, updating massive data constantly in a dynamic mobile edge network also crucial to ensure efficiency. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a dynamic QoS optimization strategy () in mobile edge networks based on incremental learning and federated learning. optimizes service cache in edge regions and allocates edge servers to edge users according to the locations of edge servers accessed by edge users in mobile scenarios. While optimizing regional service quality, the system can effectively protect user privacy. In addition, for dynamic incremental data, trains updated data based on the strategy of incremental learning hence significantly improves optimization speed. Experimental results on an edge QoS dataset show that the proposed strategy achieves global optimization in both multi-variable and multi-peak user allocation scenarios and notably enhances the training efficiency of the regional invocation model
Opening the black box of the sport event volunteer’s journey: from candidate to volunteer
Research question: This paper investigates candidates’ journey to being selected as a volunteer for the Rio2016 Games. Drawing on Actor–Network Theory, the research tracked the sociomaterial practices undertaken by candidates to become volunteers and sought to identify the actors that participate in these practices and the role the latter played in facilitating a positive (or negative) experience. Research method: A postmodern ethnography provided the basis to critically analyse candidates’ experiences in applying for a volunteer role at the Games. Data were collected via internet sites, email communications, a volunteer Facebook page, interviews with volunteers (N = 17) and official Rio 2016 documents. Results and Findings: The journey to volunteering at Rio 2016 comprised sociomaterial practices that impacted the volunteer candidate’s progression (or lack thereof) through the journey to volunteering. These were qualifying as a candidate, Waiting for ‘Godot’, Being rejected and Getting the ‘passport’ to the Games. Implications: This research presents a practice-based conceptualisation of volunteer candidates’ journey to selection. The findings demonstrate the centrality of sociomaterial practices in volunteer recruitment and the importance of an effective human and non-human interface. Flexible approaches to volunteer recruitment and selection that consider the diversity of interactions of actors involved can be profitably deployed to facilitate a good candidate experience and minimise the stress, tension and communication issues that potential volunteers face
Curating In-Between
The purpose of this practice research PhD, titled Curating In-Between, is to explore how collective creativity can transform curatorial practice through the making of contemporary art exhibitions. This research led to the development of a new method called Curating Ensemble, which combines Devised Theatre techniques with curatorial practices. It draws inspiration from Chinese philosophy and is applied within intercultural contexts in Asia and Australia.
The motivation for this research arises from a curiosity about how effective and impactful Devised Theatre methods can be when applied within curatorial practice. This study is a practice-led exploration that crosses the boundaries of performance, visual art, curatorial practice, and cultural theory, examining the connections between artist and curator, collaborator and collective, and various cultural narratives.
This practice research PhD is guided by two key questions:
(1) How can the techniques of Devised Theatre enhance curatorial practice in the making of contemporary art exhibitions? and
(2) What are the implications of adopting an ‘in-between’ collective creation approach in curatorial practice? Through artistic inquiry and collaborative efforts, I explore these questions, which have led to the development of Curating Ensemble.
The shift from single-curator methods to a collaborative and collective approach is influenced by my bicultural experience and professional background in both Asia (Hong Kong) and Australia (Melbourne). Through various curatorial experiments and engagements, the concept of Curating Ensemble has developed as a method that prioritises and values spontaneity, collaboration, and collective creativity in the creation of contemporary art exhibitions.
The Curating Ensemble concept challenges conventional curatorial practices by prioritising collaboration and integrating Devised Theatre with contemporary art curation. This approach introduces new strategies for exhibition-making.
My work centres on bringing together the energy, ideas, and practices that exist at the intersections between art and curating, individuals and groups, and Asia and Australia. Curating Ensemble is dedicated to exploring and integrating diverse areas, stories, and methods, emphasising the significance of these transitional spaces for fostering creative and curatorial innovation.
The title Curating In-Between reflects the central focus of this practice research PhD, highlighting the potential of Curatorial Energy in utilising these transitional spaces for creativity and curatorial work. It demonstrates how contemporary curatorial practices can adapt to and support sustainable development within these spaces.</p
