Advancing a Hydrogen Economy in Australia: Public Perceptions and Aspirations
Supporters of hydrogen energy advancement argue that it is time to scale up technologies and reduce costs to make hydrogen more competitive. However, for a technology to be successful, public support and acceptance are necessary. In this paper, we explore how hydrogen energy technologies (HET) are perceived by Australia’s general population and consider the way members of the public imagine their role in the implementation of hydrogen energy now and into the future. We report on a mixed methods study that included a nationally representative survey (n = 403) and semi-structured interviews (n = 30). The results found relationships between age and gender and self-reported hydrogen knowledge and revealed 1 in 2 people obtained their information about hydrogen from televised media. While strong support for hydrogen (produced from renewable energy sources) was evidenced through the findings, participants wanted more information about the practicalities of hydrogen specifically on safety. Overall, participants were uncertain about their ability to influence decisions regarding hydrogen and did not necessarily recognise that they have agency beyond their front fence
Understanding approaches to social partnerships - investigating target audience reactions and non-profit managers’ business practice: a mixed-methods study
If social partnerships can lead to favourable outcomes for not-for-profit organisations (NPOs), what steps are managers taking to achieve such outcomes? We address this question by conducting a mixed-methods study in a professional sports social partnership context in Australia. First, a survey with 4,193 sport team fans–a key target audience for NPOs was conducted to understand the impact of contextual factors (i.e. NPO reputation and perceived fit) on the consumer behaviour process, including donation, volunteer, and advocacy intentions for NPOs involved in a social partnership. Following the confirmation of favourable NPO outcomes, interviews with 11 NPO managers were conducted to explore the business practice inputs of their social partnerships. Interviews showed social partnerships were characterised by a power imbalance in favour of the sports organisation leading to a lack of co-creation of value. Further, despite an expressed intention to formalise the partnerships, formality waned as the partnership moved through the different partnership stages. Results across the two studies demonstrate the need for a more deliberate and strategic approach to social partnerships. Theoretically, we build on the limited work addressing the NPO perspective of social partnerships by adopting a dual stakeholder perspective
Effective affordable housing strategies for the urban poor in Nigeria
Providing affordable housing (AH) in a suitable manner has continued to be a global challenge despite various research attempts and policy interventions, suggesting a need for innovativeness in affordable housing provision. Review of literature exposes a mismatch between AH demand and what is supplied. A pragmatic approach to AH provision warrants an investigation of the urban poor, being targets of AH interventions. To achieve this, this study examined the urban poor to diligently explore their informal housing strategies. 40 randomly selected respondents were interviewed from the 5 strata of largest slums in Lagos, Nigeria. Following a descriptive, content and thematic analyses of data, findings are that there are concealed and untapped resources within the housing strategies of the urban poor that may inform suitable affordable housing provision approaches. Findings are that suitable rent for housing the urban poor should not exceed $9 per month, rental housing is more suitable for the urban poor than homeownership, incremental housing, use of cheaper construction materials, adopting alternative housing approaches such as shared housing, convertible homes and hostels are suitable housing construction strategies. Suitable housing financing strategies will be modifying their existent housing finance means among other essential findings. This study provides insights into informally devised housing strategies of settlers in the slums of Lagos. Data from this study may benefit policymakers and are useful for future studies on pro-poor housing provision. Study recommended that the informal strategies of the urban poor can be improved, institutionalized and incorporated into housing policies to achieve effective and sustainable affordable housing provision for the urban poor in developing economies
Understanding consumer behaviour in evolving subscription markets – lessons from sports season tickets research
Purpose: The purpose is to review literature on sports season ticket subscriptions to distil current knowledge and guide future research and practice. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review is conducted of research on sports season tickets, a long-established and innovative subscription category. Findings: In-depth examination of 28 papers showed a focus on drivers of satisfaction, churn and renewal causes, and product utilisation rates. Subscription markets typically involve many “solely loyal” consumers, most purchasing one or two subscriptions in a category. From reduced barriers to entry and exit to “curated” subscriptions, subscription marketing is changing very quickly. Sports marketers build relationships with subscribers using behavioural data, tier benefits to distinguish between casual and subscribing customers, and create recall and scarcity around key aspects of subscription to combat churn and increase utilisation. Research limitations/implications: Scarce research on subscription marketing practices remains the primary limitation. Existing research suggests that strong connections between subscriber and organisation, heavy product utilisation and/or strong barriers to switching drive customer satisfaction and retention. Practical implications: Rapid expansion of subscription products should reduce “excess loyalty”, meaning that subscription models' main benefit will be limited to reoccurring revenue. Exceptions occur when consumers are heavily connected to the product or have little provider choice, so allocate their category buying exclusively. New subscription products face myriad challenges. Guidance on effective subscription marketing from sports marketing research and practice is outlined. Originality/value: By combining research on market structure, marketing empirical generalisations and subscription marketing, this paper guides future research and practice
Strengthening a Rights-Based Approach to United Nations Peace Operations
During a July 2020 open debate the United Nations (UN) Security Council highlighted the crucial roles human rights play in peace operations, including by providing early warning of issues or problems, supporting good offices, improving the protection of civilians, strengthening national rule-of-law capacities, ensuring due diligence/compliance for military operations, leading a range of protection-related activities and supporting efforts to protect political space in fragile settings. Despite this recognition of the important role of human rights, there has been relatively little research into how human rights support the implementation of the mandates of a range of peace operations, leaving the evidence base for understanding the contribution of human rights to peace operations very thin.
The purpose of this policy brief is to chart out key complexities linked to operationalising a rights-based approach to peace operations. It identifies and introduces critical challenges to mandate implementation through specific themes, including the contribution of human rights to the protection of civilians, stabilisation mandates, smaller-footprint field offices, the political work of special envoys and mission transitions.
The paper examines both theoretical and operational aspects of human rights in peace operations. In line with the High-Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations report (2015), it discusses human rights considerations in relation to a range of UN peace operations, including peacekeeping and special political missions, regional prevention offices, and special envoys. The first section locates human rights components and concerns across a spectrum of UN peace operations, comparing how human rights contribute to a wide range of peace and security engagements. The second section highlights several challenges to realising human rights aims and objectives in field missions. The final section proposes a series of questions that warrant further discussion to elucidate and support a rights-based approach to peace operations that could help to respond to the call in the New Agenda for Peace for a reflection on the limits and future of UN peacekeeping and other ongoing policymaking within the UN system. The paper illustrates that in order to support the UN’s recommitment to its core principles and human rights pillar, there is a need for greater attention to the ways that human rights can support the analysis and strategic positioning of UN peace operations
Weaving Tectonics: Algorithmically Optimised Robotic FRP Weaving of Large Scale Planar Forms
Steel reinforced concrete is a widely used material for constructing large spanning planar building elements due to its strength, durability, and low cost, but its environmental impact, long fabrication time, and relatively low structural performance demonstrate the need for innovation. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel design methodology and fabrication method that integrates robotic Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) woven reinforcement that is optimized using a Multi-Weight Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (MW-BESO) algorithm. The optimized FRP reinforcement is then cast in epoxy resin to produce the large scale planar building element. The methodology is evaluated through a Tabletop prototype and other small-scale rapid prototypes, which demonstrate the successes, challenges, and limitations of this approach. The study outlines the material and methodological testing conducted to assess the effectiveness of using the MW-BESO algorithm with robotic FRP weaving and describes the workflow of transforming the resulting 3D MW-BESO geometry into a 2D robotic winding path for fabrication. The research shows that this methodology has the potential to reduce the environmental impact, stimulate innovative design solutions, and streamline the fabrication of large scale building elements, providing a promising avenue for the development of sustainable and efficient construction techniques
Mapping the character of urban districts: The morphology, land use and visual character of Chinatowns
This paper examines the urban character of Chinatown districts around the world, as a key example of an urban ethnic enclave, focusing on four large Chinatowns in San Francisco, Yokohama, Melbourne and Sydney. It advances knowledge about the spatial elements that define urban districts, a concept pioneered by Kevin Lynch. Existing literature on Chinatowns primarily explores the historically changing relationships between their Chinese migrant communities and their host cities, or the visual and physical character of individual cases. This paper develops new insights into how the built forms of these urban districts are similar to or different from their surroundings and from each other. It employs a methodology that combines space syntax analysis of street networks, morphological analysis of built form, land-use analysis, and mapping of visual character from street level. It examines the Chinatown districts' spatial extents in terms of contrasts between their spatial attributes and their wider urban surroundings. The findings develop a new taxonomy of Chinatowns based on their urban spatial characteristics
The behavior of students in relation to green marketing as green consumers: A reasoned action approach (RAA)
The objective of this study is to examine the extent of awareness, intention, and behavior among university students in relation to green marketing. It is recognized that the present cohort of students, as well as future generations, will have a substantial impact on shaping the course of the world. The respondents for this study consisted of university students, and the collected data was subsequently analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 25 in order to test the stated hypothesis. University students exhibit a comprehensive understanding of green marketing and a conscious inclination toward embracing favorable intentions and behaviors in relation to this domain. The results of this study suggest that there exists a statistically significant and positive correlation between individuals’ level of green awareness and their intention to participate in environmentally friendly consumer practices. Furthermore, it has been observed that the intention of consumers to engage in green practices has a noteworthy influence on their subsequent behavior in terms of adopting environmentally friendly behaviors. The findings obtained from studies on green marketing are of utmost importance in offering valuable guidance and orientation toward a future characterized by heightened environmental awareness and sustainability. The novelty of this study is to provide a lucid comprehension of students’ perceptions about green marketing. Several factors can potentially impact the intention and behavior of environmentally conscious consumers, including personal values, social norms, and economic factors. Additional research is necessary in order to obtain a more thorough comprehension of the complexity of these variables, and how they interact to impact consumer behavior
Time Estimation for a New Block Generation in Blockchain-Enabled Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged with Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to address existing scalability challenges and improve the trustworthiness of machine-to-machine communication. Among the numerous potential benefits of combining IoT and DLT, Blockchain, a subset of DLT, is a crucial enabler to accelerate secure IoT adoption. Appending a new block to a blockchain, especially in a blockchain-based IoT ecosystem, requires more delay than expected. This delay is one of several issues limiting the broader adoption of blockchain within the IoT domain. To assess this delay, we develop a new comprehensive model to estimate the time required to generate a new block in a blockchain-enabled IoT system. To this end, we develop sub-computation models and compare time consumption associated with the block generation process by conducting an extensive analysis of the following selected IoT layers: device layer, cluster head layer, fog/edge layer, and cloud layer. Our study identifies potential time-consuming steps in adding a new block to a network. Our results demonstrate that the type of blockchain framework and data encryption algorithms could affect the block generation time and that Avalanche, Conflux, Algorand, Polkadot Hyperledger Fabric outperforms Ethereum in terms of block generation time in IoT networks. On the other hand, the blockchain framework does not play a significant role in block generation time for smaller data packets. We also observed the benefit of using 256-bit ECC (elliptic curve cryptography) encryption and the fog layer in IoT networks to enhance the scalability of the block generation process. All in all, our results indicate that the total block generation time varies depending on the selected IoT framework, data encryption algorithm, blockchain type, and key functions of the layers. However, we found that time delays associated with queuing or block size are negligible relative to the other key components of block generation time
Spiking Neural Networks for Detecting Satellite Internet-of-Things Signals
With the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) networks, ubiquitous coverage is becoming increasingly necessary. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations for IoT have been proposed to provide coverage to regions where terrestrial systems cannot. However, LEO constellations for uplink communications are severely limited by the high density of user devices, which causes a high level of co-channel interference. This research presents a framework that utilizes spiking neural networks (SNNs) to detect IoT signals in the presence of uplink interference. The key advantage of SNNs is the extremely low power consumption relative to traditional deep learning (DL) networks. The performance of the spiking-based neural network detectors is compared against state-of-the-art DL networks and the conventional matched filter detector. Results indicate that both DL and SNN-based receivers surpass the matched filter detector in interference-heavy scenarios, owing to their capacity to effectively distinguish target signals amidst co-channel interference. Moreover, our work highlights the ultra-low power consumption of SNNs compared to other DL methods for signal detection. The strong detection performance and low power consumption of SNNs make them particularly suitable for onboard signal detection in IoT LEO satellites, especially in high interference conditions
