In this context, flow analysis is very attractive, as they the flow-based procedures are characterized by enhanced analytical figures of merit. Moreover, the flow analysers do not usually require sophisticated and expensive instrumentation, are amenable to full automation and to miniaturization, and are well suited for in situ analyses. The tendency to carry out traditional methods of analysis in the flow analyser has becoming more pronounced, especially in relation to large-scale routine analyses. The technology of solution handling has become more and more improved, leading to enhanced strategies for chemical assays. Consequently, different modalities of flow analysis (e.g. SFA, FIA, SIA) have been conceived, developed and applied to solve real problems. Most of the flow-based analytical procedures presently in use, however, do not exploit the full potential of flow analysis. The main object of the book is then to provide a scientific basis and to familiarise a wide community of researchers, students, technicians, etc with the uses of flow analysis. Emphasis is given to spectrophotometric and luminometric detection, in relation to agronomical, geological, industrial, pharmaceutical and environmental applications. The book includes historical and theoretical aspects, recent achievements in instrumentation, guidelines for methodology implementation, and applications. Cerastes cerastes and Vipera lebetina Snake Venoms Apoptotic – Stimulating Activity to Human Breast Cancer Cells and Related Gene Modulation
Apoptosis occurs normally during development and aging as a homeostatic mechanism to maintain cell populations. Dysregulation of apoptosis can disrupt the equilibrium between cell growth and cell death leading to the development of cancer. Thus, the investigation of new biological apoptotic activators could play an important role in cancer therapy. In the present study, Cerastes cerastes and Vipera lebetina snake venoms were evaluated for their ability to activate apoptosis in cancer cells where test venoms exhibited a concentration and time dependent cytotoxic effect on breast cancer (MCF-7) cells. Typical apoptotic morphological features were demonstrated in venom treated cells detected via transmission electron microscope. In addition, flow cytometric analysis showed an increase in the percentage of apoptotic cells post 24 h treatment relative to venom concentrations. At the molecular level, test venoms induced apoptosis were mediated by up regulation of pro-apoptotic genes (p53 & Bax) and down regulation of anti-apoptotic gene (Bcl-2) in MCF-7 cells, indicating that these venoms could serve as apoptotic stimulators, presenting a novel and potential therapeutic strategy for cancer treatment

Effect of two different abutment designs on implants supporting mandibular distal extension prostheses
Single implants may be placed at the distal extension of the denture base to minimize the potential for dislodgement of the bilateral or unilateral distal extension partial dentures. The premise is that this will minimize the risk of potential problems of patient discomfort associated with prosthesis retention and stability resulting from residual ridge resorption.
Aim of the study: Evaluation of two different abutment designs on marginal bone loss and bone density around implants supporting mandibular distal extension removable partial overdentures.
Materials and Methods: Thirty partially edentulous patients with unilateral distal extension and modification area in the other side (Kennedy class II modification 1) were selected for this study. Patients were divided into two groups; Group I: received a distal extension removable prosthesis supported by one implant with conventional dome shaped abutment. Group II: received a distal extension removable prosthesis supported by one implant with a ball and socket abutment. Radiographic evaluation of marginal bone loss and density around all implants in both groups was carried out using digital radiography ( Digora) for one year period every three months interval.
Results & Conclusions: After 12 months, Group I showed statistically significantly higher mean amount of marginal bone loss than Group II. A constant increase in bone density values was denoted in both groups through out the whole study period although there was no statistically significant difference between bone density values in the two groups. It can be concluded that the ball and socket abutments showed less marginal bone loss around implants when compared to conventional dome shaped abutments for implant supported mandibular distal extension partial overdentures
Application Of Spectrophotometric And Chromatographic Methods for Stability Indicating Determination of Leflunomide
Leflunomide, an amide containing compound, pyrimidine synthesis inhibitor a leading drug in treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. Four stability indicating methods are presented in this paper for the selective determinations of leflunomide in presence of its alkaline degradate. The resolution of the drug and its alkaline degradate has been achieved using derivative spectrophotometry including second, third and fourth derivatives. The derivative amplitudes are measured at 256.4 nm, 269.8 nm, 226.6 nm for D2, D3, and D4 respectively. The proposed methods were found to be linear over the range of (2.0-24.0 gml). The fourth method is based on the chromographic separation on a C18 column using a mobile phase of 0.01 M aqueous potassium dihydrogen phosphate adjusted at pH 3.5 with orthophosphoric acid, acetonitrile in a ratio of (30:70), a flow rate of 1 ml/min and UV detection at 262 nm. The proposed methods were validated with regard to accuracy, precision, selectivity, robustness, application to pharmaceutical preparation and further validated by applying standard addition technique
