    Sanitizing Bodies: Biomedicalization and the Transformation of Menstrual and Childbirth Impurity in Banaras, India

    Biomedicalization is a multi-sited and complex process in which previously non-medical \ud conditions are pathologized and treated with increasingly technoscientific interventions. \ud Part of this process includes the construction of patient’s bodies as sites of biomedical \ud knowledge and intervention. My thesis investigates how the biomedicalization of female \ud reproduction affected understandings and practices regarding menstruation and \ud childbirth impurity in the city of Banāras, India. The “sanitization” of female \ud reproductive bodies, or loss of ritual pollution, witnessed in the context of Banaras is \ud discussed and I suggest that the reconstruction of female bodies as sites of biomedical \ud knowledge informed and even challenged former understandings of the ritual pollution \ud and stigma associated with the processes of menstruation and childbirth. I compare my \ud findings to the critiques of medical anthropologists regarding the medicalization of \ud childbirth in the U.S. and consider the localized, complex, and at times, contradictory \ud affects of biomedicalization

    Art & Experiential Education: How a Deweyian Perspective on Art as the Key to Holistic Learning and Growth Can Inform Contemporary Art Education

    Dewey's conception of the role that experience should play in learning and development has\ud implications for art education. This essay explores Dewey's philosophy of experiential education\ud and the ways in which his theory resonates with artistic experience and practice. It overviews the\ud history of art education in the United States, as well as various arguments for and trends within\ud it; and contains three case studies - Montessori schools, Waldorf schools, and Black Mountain\ud College - whose practices, pedagogies, and underlying philosophies are examined from a\ud Deweyian, experiential perspective. Throughout this investigation, implications for\ud contemporary art education are considered. Dewey's writings and the case studies together\ud reveal that a holistic art education in which artistic, aesthetic activity and experience are\ud integrated into all aspects of the curriculum and classroom environment and emphasized by\ud virtue of their ubiquity, students may develop a perceptual awareness and aesthetic sensibility\ud that benefits them in their learning and their daily life

    Tragedy

    In this course we will be reading two of the surviving works of fifth century Greek tragedy, Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound and Sophocles’ Philoctetes, with selected critical essays and background reading in other plays by the two tragedians. Class time will be divided between translation and discussion, with attention not only to themes specific to each tragedy but also to such common topics as: the playwright’s treatment of the inherited myth; the way in which the drama tells its the story; the role and nature of the chorus; characterization and the connections between characters; the relationship of divine and human; the role of prophecy; choice, justice and retribution; political resonances; performance issues; and the language of dialogue and of choral ode. Class will also include practice reading aloud in the meter of dialogue and in some of the simpler choral meters, preparation of a passage for the spring Oralitea, and discussion of different translations of selected passages

    Enantiomerically Pure Planar Chiral N-Oxazolidinoyl Diene Tricarbonyl Iron(O) Complexes: Their Synthesis and Functionalization

    Broadly, the goal of this research was to observe the scope of the molecules we could make, how effective the syntheses were, and what the broader outcomes were.\ud One objective of this research was to observe how oxazolidinoyl iron tricarbonyl diene scaffolds could be used for the diastereoselective synthesis of molecules. To determine the substrate scope, we wanted to manipulate the group functionalization at the R1 and R2 side chain. We were able to incorporate the desired aldehyde both at the R1 and the R2 position, although subsequent manipulation was only successful at the R1 side chain. In addition to the aldehyde, we observed the successful incorporation of alcohol (protected and de-protected), ester, amide, vinyl and many other functional groups.\ud Another objective of this research was to determine how effective the production of these molecules were, which involved looking at reaction yields, but most importantly, the diastereoselectivity of complexation and nucleophilic addition reactions. The yields for the Stille and complexation reactions, when the chiral auxiliary was the Evans oxazolidinone, were higher than those seen in the sulfoxide series (70-99% versus 55- 75%). To observe what affected the complexation diastereomeric ratios, we wanted to manipulate the selective synthesis of the diene unit by modifying the size of the R1 and R2 side chains. In the first chapter of this thesis, the iron complexation diastereoselectivities were shown to increase as the size of the R2 side chain increased. This corroborates the assumptions we made when the crystal structure for the oxazolidinoyl iron tricarbonyl diene system was resolved: it seems that in order to avoid non-bonding interactions between the R2 side chain and the oxazolidinone isopropyl group, the R2 side chain is distorted out of the diene's plane, which restricts its available conformations and thus enhances the complexation facial bias. All nucleophilic addition reactions on the oxazolidinoyl iron tricarbonyl diene complexes were perfect (100:0). The last objective of this research, and just like in any research, is to observe what we can do with this chemistry. Although several attempts were made on producing macrocyclic rings through Diels Alder reactions, none were successful. Despite this, we were able to determine a few viable synthetic routes to natural structural motifs

    Magnetic Field and Ion Density Correlation Analysis of SSX Plasma

    Chaotic and unpredictable behavior are both hallmarks of turbulence. Turbulence may be understood in a variety of ways, but traditionally is understood statistically. By using a statistical metric, such as the autocorrelation function or power spectrum of a turbulent signal, we may begin find structure or order a signal that is seemingly random. Conversely, we may attempt to reproduce this order by combining a large number of periodic wave signals at various frequencies. The idea that such linear combinations can reproduce some aspects of turbulence is the basis of the quasi-linear premise. If we accept the quasi-linear premise, then we break down a turbulent signal into the waves which compose it. The distribution of these waves could potentially inform us of the fundamental characteristics of the signal itself.\ud It is this lofty goal we have in mind when we consider turbulent signals produced by plasma created at the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX). In considering these plasmas, we accept the quasi-linear premise and assert that the turbulent behavior of the plasma can be modeled, in part, by a collection of randomly phased waves of various amplitudes. The waves supported by the plasma are obtained by solving the equations of linearized magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave theory. They are identified within the plasma through their characteristic fluctuations in magnetic field magnitude |B| and ion density n. More specifically, the wave modes behave uniquely with respect to the relative phase of |B| and n, so we determine the wave mode composition of SSX plasma through correlation analysis of time series of |B| and n. However, analysis of the time series tells us very little about the higher frequency modes of the plasma, so we also perform correlation analysis spectrally by considering the Fourier transforms of the original |B| and n signals. This allows us to determine the wave mode composition of the plasma at various frequencies, including ones that have relatively little power compared to the rest of the signal. Though our analysis is based on a strong assumption, the quasi-linear premise, it will give us new perspective and insight on the character of SSX plasma that would otherwise not be immediately obvious
