    Differential Geometry

    No full text
There are two sets of contrasting perspectives in di erential geometry: local vs. global and intrinsic vs. extrinsic. Local, or descriptive, geometry puts forth language to describe properties the geometry of a curve or (more interestingly) a surface in a neighborhood of a point. There are two ways to develop this language: extrinsically (using the way the surface is embedded\ud inside of R3) or intrinsically (using only quantities that can be measured on the surface itself). We will take both approaches, and show that they are equivalent approaches to the de nition of curvature | this is Gauss' famous Theorema Egregium.\ud Global geometry asks how local properties influence the behavior of the entire surface. We will see a few examples of this to whet your appetite, including the Fary-Milnor Theorem about the total curvature of knotted curves and the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, the Coolest Theorem in Undergraduate Mathematics:TM What does it say? Composers, Players, and Listeners in the 17th and 18th centuries

    No full text
A study of music and musical life in Europe from 1600 to 1750. The course traces sharp changes in musical style and the equally striking changes in roles for soloists, composers, and audiences in an international context of patronage and publishing. Composers from Monteverdi to Bach are covered. The course unfolds in three phases: (1) Musical Forms and Expression, (2) Musical Institutions, and (3) Musical in the Capitals of Europe

    Foundations in Social Theory

    No full text
Before one can practice sociology, it’s necessary to get a sense of the foundations on which the discipline is constructed. This course is designed to provide this. It more specifically examines the development of sociological theory as the process of different theorists coming to terms with large social changes occurring during the development of industrial society. The course covers two semesters. In this semester, the focus is on understanding the nature of economic and political systems, and the relationship between these. The spring semester covers issues relating to culture, systems of meaning, and interaction

Neuroplasticity after Sexual Experience in the Nucleus Accumbens of Syrian hamsters

    No full text
Research over the past three decades has demonstrated that many neural changes occur in response to rewarding stimuli and behavior. However, most of this research has focused on the changes that occur following drug use and their role in addiction. Less research has investigated the neural changes in response to everyday rewarding behaviors such as eating, exercising, and sexual behavior, and even less has explored whether these changes differ in male and female brains. The goal of this study was to investigate the changes in brain circuitry that occur in Syrian hamsters after exposure to sexual experiences and to identify any possible sex differences involved. Specifically, levels of delta FosB, a transcription factor that is important for long-term neural plasticity following rewarding experiences, was measured in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc) as a way to quantify these neural changes. This study also aimed at investigating whether the efficiency with which hamsters mate is improved with experience, as measured by the time the hamsters are actively having sex and the amount of sex-related behaviors they perform. It was expected that sexual experiences would lead to an up-regulation of delta FosB in the NAc, that this up-regulation would not differ between the sexes, and that mating efficiency would improve with experience. The results demonstrated that sexual experience led to higher delta FosB levels in the NAc than controls, and that there were no differences in delta FosB levels between males and females of the same group. This study also found that mating efficiency was not improved with experience. The results obtained in this study suggest that the normal rewarding behavior of sexual experience leads to neuroplastic changes in the NAc of Syrian hamsters and that male and female Syrian hamsters likely have similar neuroplastic changes following sexual experiences. This research has the potential to provide a better understanding of how drugs of abuse take advantage of reward pathways, and eventually lead to better treatments for addiction

    Morphology of the Maung Language

    No full text
This thesis aims to elucidate phenomena in the morphophonology of Maung, an Australian\ud language with an estimated 260 speakers. Using cross-linguistic typological patterns as a\ud framework, this paper discusses phonological phenomena that occur when two-consonant and\ud two-vowel clusters form across a morpheme boundary. Major topics include consonant cluster\ud reduction, sonority of onsets, and nasal place assimilation. Additionally, phonological processes\ud are prioritized in a manner conducive to future Optimality Theoretic analysis

Nonmanual clash of the lower face nonmanuals in American Sign Language

    No full text
Nonmanuals in American Sign Language (ASL) provide syntactic, lexical,\ud prosodic, and affective information. While, in general, nonmanuals with different\ud functions are expressed through different articulatory channels, allowing them to\ud be layered and produced simultaneously, there are nonmanuals with different\ud fimctions that involve the same articulator. Since a given articulator cannot be\ud used in two ways at once, we have the potential for what I am calling, in this\ud context, a "clash". The simultaneous articulation of certain nonmanuals of the\ud lower face, those that are modifiers or obligatory parts of lexical items, has the\ud potential to result in a clash. I present the theoretical potential for this particular\ud clash, detailing the forms in which it can theoretically appear. This clash and its\ud resolution are then examined in a pilot study, conducted with a native signer. In\ud the pilot study, the signer used four methods to avoid or resolve a clash: a verb-sandwich\ud construction, displacement of the lexical nonmanual, dropping of the lexical nonmanual\ud and paraphrase of the elicited sentence. These methods are examined within the framework\ud of autosegmental phonology, while compared to similar processes in tone languages
