Being Beyonce, Nicki, and Rihanna: How Identification Affects the Perception of Black Women's Performance

    No full text
Black women are at the intersection of two marginalized identities: their gender and\ud their race. This intersection makes the organizations and movements addressing black \ud women’s issues rare because these unique issues are different from both the issues \ud facing black men and the issues facing white women. This thesis examines the reactions\ud that women of differing racial groups have to music videos of black women. To begin to \ud answer the question, “why do women belonging to different racial categories react \ud differently to black women in music videos”, three focus groups each containing women \ud belonging to three different racial categories, black, non black person-of-color, and \ud white non person-of-color, were conducted. Reactions were analyzed in conversation \ud with literature concerning controlling images, the dehumanization of black women, \ud intersectional identities, and the consequences of each. This study concludes that the \ud defining difference that affects these reactions is the level of racial identification that\ud the participants felt with the artists. The author concludes that the identification women\ud have with black women has real consequences, from education and other social \ud matters, to imprisonment and health outcomes. The author therefore suggests that \ud more research should be done to determine the best ways to mitigate this effect and to \ud address the issues specifically facing black women
