新潟大学Niigata University博士(学術)Purpose: This study aimed to objectively verify the effectiveness of Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) as a complementary and alternative therapy based on its effects. Design: This was a cross-sectional, observational, and nonrandomized comparative study conducted. Materials and Methods: Changes in autonomic nerve activity, visual analog scale (VAS), interviews with patients, and general condition of patients and healthy individuals were analyzed. Additionally, differences in the patterns were analyzed between the two groups. Result: 10 patients and 9 healthy individuals were included in this study. The low frequency to high frequency (LF/HF) ratio showed a downward trend in the patient group. High frequency in normalized units (HFnu) showed a significant increase in the patient group. A comparison of the change patterns of HFnu values between the patient and healthy groups showed significant changes in the patient group. Discussion: These results demonstrate that AAT can relieve mental distress in patients with terminal cancer. These findings indicate that AAT is a complementary and alternative therapy that can improve the Quality of life (QOL) of patients with terminal cancer and support palliative care. Conclusion: AAT has the effect of reducing pain and maintaining and improving the QOL of patients with terminal cancer, even in the short period before death.Hiroko Fujisawa, Kensuke Yamamura."The Impact of Animal-Assisted Therapy on Changes in Autonomic Nervous Activity in Terminal Cancer Patients",International Medical Journal Vol.31, No.6, pp.169-173 , December 2024,https://seronjihou.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/316169.pdf新大院博(学)第41

新潟大学Niigata University博士(医学)Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) causes cellular senescence due to oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and ectopic fat deposition in the liver. Recently, dasatinib, an antitumor agent, and quercetin, a dietary supplement, were combined as a senolytic drug to eliminate senescent cells. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effects of dasatinib and quercetin administration on removing senescent cells and their therapeutic effects on MASLD in a medaka MASLD model. Dasatinib and quercetin were administered to a medaka MASLD model, which was fed a high-fat diet by dissolving them in aquarium water. The results revealed that senescent cells in the liver were increased in the HFD group but improved in the treatment group. Hematoxylin and eosin staining also showed that treatment improved fat deposition in hepatocytes. In addition, TGFβ1, a driver factor of fibrosis, was reduced in the treatment group. Dasatinib and quercetin eliminated senescent cells in MASLD, attenuated fat deposition, and suppressed fibrosis gene expression. The results indicate that dasatinib and quercetin as senolytic drugs are novel therapeutic agents that reduce MASLD.Yakubo, S.; Abe, H.; Li, Y.; Kudo, M.; Kimura, A.; Wakabayashi, T.; Watanabe, Y.; Kimura, N.; Setsu, T.; Yokoo, T.; et al. 新潟大学博士(医学)Background Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea are often asymptomatic but can cause severe complications, including infertility and vertical transmission in cisgender women, particularly female sex workers (FSWs). Sex work is strongly associated with syphilis, with FSWs representing 38% of syphilis cases among Japanese women in 2021. Despite doxycycline’s proven effectiveness in preventing bacterial STIs, its efficacy in high-risk cisgender women remains inconclusive, highlighting the need for targeted STI prevention strategies in this population. Objectives We investigated the effectiveness of doxycycline pre-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPrEP) in preventing STIs and its impact on vaginal flora among FSWs. Participants and methods This retrospective study included 40 FSWs aged ≥18 years who initiated doxyPrEP (100 mg/day) for STI prevention at a private clinic in Tokyo, Japan, between 1 October 2022 and 14 November 2023. Incidence rate ratios (IRR) for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, bacterial vaginosis (BV), and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) were estimated using fixed-effects Poisson regression models. Adherence, side effects, and satisfaction were evaluated through follow-up clinical evaluations. Results Overall STI incidence significantly declined from 232.3 to 79.2/100 person-years following doxyPrEP initiation (IRR = 0.33, P = 0.020). The reduction in chlamydia showed marginal statistical significance (IRR = 0.35, P = 0.056), and syphilis cases dropped to zero. Gonorrhoea, BV, and VVC incidence showed no significant changes. Follow-up clinical evaluations indicated high adherence to doxyPrEP, no serious adverse events, and high satisfaction with doxyPrEP. Conclusions DoxyPrEP significantly reduced the overall STI incidence among FSWs without increasing other vaginal infections.Seitaro Abe, Daisuke Mizushima, Naokatsu Ando, Akira Kawashima, Haruka Uemura, Satoshi Shibata, Hiroshi Moro, Toshiaki kikuchi, Hiroyuki Gatanaga, Shinichi Oka, Daisuke Shiojiri, Doxycycline pre-exposure prophylaxis prevents sexually transmitted infections without affecting vaginal bacterial flora in female sex workers, JAC-Antimicrobial Resistance, Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2025, dlaf054, https://doi.org/10.1093/jacamr/dlaf054新大院博(医)第1282

新潟大学博士(歯学)Evaluating masticatory behavior before and after surgical orthodontic treatment is of paramount importance for the successful postoperative oral rehabilitation of patients with jaw deformities. In this study, masticatory function was evaluated by measuring masticatory behavior quantitatively in patients with jaw deformities before and after surgical orthodontic treatment. The untreated group included 42 patients with jaw deformities. The post-treatment group included 55 patients whose jaw deformities had been surgically corrected at least one year previously. The control group included 53 adults with individual normal occlusion. Masticatory behavior was measured using Bitescan®, and the occlusal contact area and maximum occlusal force were measured using Dental Prescale II. Compared with the other two groups, the post-treatment group had the longest eating time. The right−left imbalance of mastication was worse in the untreated group than in the other two groups. Both the occlusal contact area and maximum occlusal force of the untreated and post-treatment groups were significantly lower than those of the control group. This study revealed that postoperative masticatory behavior was not sufficiently improved, suggesting the possibility of insufficient adaptation to postoperative occlusion, a state of recovery of masticatory muscles, and a reliance on habitual masticatory behavior.新大院博(歯)第603
