The bryozoan collection of Prof. Dr Ehrhard Voigt (1905–2004) at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt am Main, Germany is a world-renowned collection of great scientific value. It is the world's largest collection of fossil bryozoans from the Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene and a unique archive documenting the evolution of this phylum of marine invertebrates during this time interval in the Boreal Chalk Sea that extended from the British Isles to the Aral Sea in Central Asia. The Voigt Collection contains over 300,000 specimens and was relocated to the Senckenberg Institute in 2005 according to the bequest of Ehrhard Voigt. As a result of a DFG-funded project, we present here a three-part type catalogue of the holotypes and neotypes of 256 bryozoan species in the Voigt Collection, of which this is Part 2. In total over the three parts, 247 species are re-illustrated but the name-bearing type specimens of 20 species are missing and no material could be found for 9 species. Two species, described as ctenostome bryozoans by Ehrhard Voigt, are questionable, while a further three 'ctenostome' species and one 'ctenostome' genus are considered as ichnotaxa.

Wildlife– A Barely Visible (F)actor in the Landscape. Agro-Sylvo-Pastoralism in the Morvan and Agroforestry in Sumatra

    No full text
While the Morvan and southern Bukit Barisa (Sumatra) are very different in sociological and ecological terms, they are both medium elevation mountainous massifs where local forests are subjected to similar stresses deriving from single-crop cultivation that have depleted both the complexity of the landscapes and biodiversity. The relations of the occupants of these places (inhabitants as well as professionals – farmers, foresters – and occasional visitors – city-dwelling hunters, tourists, etc.) with wild animals are affected by this breakdown in rhythm and balance, but they can also contribute to remedying this state of affairs. From among the very numerous types of forestry systems that exist on these two territories and the thousands of “wild” species, we here focus on two “special” moments: incursions by small and medium-sized wild animals into the agrosilvo- pastoral farms (Morvan bocage in the Anost and Château-Chinon municipalities largely surrounded by forests, and into agroforests of the Liwa plateau and the piedmont of the Sumatran cordillera), and the encounter with the emblematic figure of wildness embodied by wild boar (Sus scrofa in the Morvan and Sus barbatus in Sumatra), with its connotations of purity and impurity. A study of these two “moments” shows how land tenure issues and the “denaturalization of wildlife” are symptomatic of a crisis in forest governance and of local forestry systems. This contribution, which is the outcome of several years spent in both localities, lies at the crossroads between humanist thinking in geography, and mesology. It explores representations of landscapes and changes in the latter, in particular when wild animals are present, affecting how these spaces evolve by influencing the actions taken. For that purpose, we use a combination of several media, recorded during shared moments with the inhabitants both male and female: local and national languages, terminology specific to certain categories of population, narratives, itineraries with commentary, landscape interpretations – all doors that open out on to the diversity of living environments, despite the singleness of the shared ecosystem they all face

    Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with Hypereosinophilia

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with hypereosinophilia is a rare disease, with the majority of reported cases being B-lineage ALL. Although eosinophilia is considered a reactive, non-neoplastic epiphenomenon, it adversely affects patient outcomes, both in children and adults. It is a distinct clinical entity by World Health Organization (WHO) 2008 and commonly associated with a unique cytogenetic abnormality

Complementary Therapies in the Swiss Health System. Example to be followed or Unique Case

    Get PDF
Complementary therapies have been practised for a long time in Switzerland. In 2009, a Popular Initiative requested they be reimbursed by the Basic Medical Insurance. The new Law provides solid ground to improve training and increase the number of clinical trials. Integrative Medicine Centers are established in various cantons and new practices implemented. These positive developments are now colliding with the conflicts of interest inherent to the health sector. The extension of chronicle diseases and the demographic trends require the organization and funding of the health system to be revised. In this context, Integrative medicine must prove it is more efficient and cheaper than the actual system. Its future lies in the hands of committed stakeholders and the Swiss direct democracy
