The Manshū Nippō and the Issue of Chinese Reunification at the turn of 1929
The Manshū Nippō, alternately named Manshū Nichinichi Shinbun in 1907-27 and again in 1935-44, was for several years the largest newspaper circulated in Northeast China. It was based in Dairen/Dalian and belonged to the media network of the South Manchuria Railway Company, or Mantetsu for short. As a quasi-official press organ, it played a major role in the dissemination of views favorable to Japanese interests in the surrounding region. Despite being a prime source for the study of imperial Japan’s relations with China from the standpoint of public communication, the ManNichi has attracted so far little attention in the scholarly literature. In particular, with the exception of the second half of 1929, there a lack of discourse analysis on the crucial period between June 1928 and the summer of 1931. It means the interval from the conclusion of the Northern Expedition, waged by the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) against the “warlords” who controlled central and northern China, up to the months preceding the outbreak of the Manchurian incident.
The purpose of this essay is to clarify how the ManNichi, within that span of time, dealt with a turning point in Chinese politics: the “change of banner” which on December 29, 1928, marked the formal submission of the Northeast, or Three Eastern Provinces, to the Nationalist Party and the central government it had recently established in Nanjing. More precisely, the articles examined here cover a period of about one month between the announcement of the flag replacement and the aftermath of a closely related incident that upset the factional balance of power in the “Fengtian clique,” that is the shooting of Yang Yuting and Chang Yinhuai by order of Zhang Xueliang on January 10, 1929. Through a comprehensive survey of editorials, opinion pieces and factual reports, this study aims to ascertain the character of the resulting narrative in comparison with the editorial views of the two leading newspapers of Japan, as well as with opinions that appeared later in the ManNichi, after a change of government in Tokyo.
The findings prove that the ManNichi fully supported the dualistic policy of the Tanaka cabinet toward “Manchuria” and “mainland China,” which it considered functional to the protection of Japan’s vital interests in the Northeast. However, the relative influence of various imperial agencies in the process of discourse formation below the surface remains unclear

Bilancio consolidato. Discipina nazionale e IFRS, III edizione
Struggling with the Essentials: A Debate between Avicenna and His Contemporaries on Essentiality and Necessity in Demonstrations
Central to Avicenna’s (Ibn Sīnā, d. 428H/1037) logic are the definitions of essentiality and necessity and the assessment of their roles in demonstrations. Avicenna’s reworking of Aristotelian logic puts particular emphasis on the distinction between essential and accidental, necessary and contingent attributes. Most crucial in this respect is Avicenna’s classification of essential and accidental attributes based on their different degrees of separability from their subjects, namely separability in estimation (tawahhum) and in existence (wuǧūd). This taxonomy addresses interpretative challenges encountered by earlier exegetes, particularly regarding the distinction between essential constituents (ḏātiyya muqawwima) and non-essential implicates (lawāzim). This paper aims to reconstruct the debate between Avicenna and his contemporaries on this subject, drawing from primary sources such as Avicenna’s reworking of the Posterior Analytics (Kitāb al-Burhān) in the Kitāb al-Šifāʾ (chapter II.2) and his Letter addressed to Vizir Abū Saʿd. These writings preserve traces of the elaborations on the subject by the philosophers of the Peripatetic school of Baghdad and by intellectuals more or less directly affiliated with it (including Abū l-Qāsim al-Kirmānī), thus enabling us to reconstruct the fundamental lines of an otherwise lost debate
Differential Network Analysis for Count Data with Application to Basketball Data
We introduce a novel methodology for differential network analysis in two-sample problems, specifically designed for count data using Poisson regression models. The objective is to identify differences between networks under distinct conditions. We conduct node-level screening to assess whether node-conditional distributions differ across conditions. These distributions are modeled using Poisson generalized linear models, and equality is tested via likelihood ratio tests, ensuring false discovery rate control across nodes. Through a simulation study, we show that our approach has a strong performance in accurately identifying differences while maintaining false discovery rate control. Finally, we apply the method to analyze variations in the basketball statistics of the two NBA finalist teams from the 2009–2010 season: the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics
Simple Strategies in Multi-unit Assignment Problems
This paper examines strategic behavior in multi-unit assignment problems, employing simple manipulation strategies. Assuming responsive preferences and priorities, we demonstrate that dropping strategies are exhaustive in the immediate acceptance mechanism, while truncation strategies fall short. This finding clarifies the trade-offs among stability, simplicity, and manipulability in assignment mechanisms, with implications for real-world applications, such as course allocation
Markov switching multiple-equation tensor regressions
A new flexible tensor model for multiple-equation regressions that accounts for latent regime changes is proposed. The model allows for dynamic coefficients and multi-dimensional covariates that vary across equations. The coefficients are driven by a common hidden Markov process that addresses structural breaks to enhance the model flexibility and preserve parsimony. A new soft PARAFAC hierarchical prior is introduced to achieve dimensionality reduction while preserving the structural information of the covariate tensor. The proposed prior includes a new multi-way shrinking effect to address over-parametrization issues while preserving interpretability and model tractability. Theoretical results are derived to help with the choice of the hyperparameters. An efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm based on random scan Gibbs and back-fitting strategy is designed with priority placed on computational scalability of the posterior sampling. The validity of the MCMC algorithm is demonstrated theoretically, and its computational efficiency is studied using numerical experiments in different parameter settings. The effectiveness of the model framework is illustrated using two original real data analyses. The proposed model exhibits superior performance compared to the current benchmark, Lasso regression
The aim of this contribution is to address the provisions of Directive 2024/1385 on the issue of cyberviolence by comparing them with other existing and future instruments of the EU law, in order to assess whether and how the Directive is to be in continuity and coordination with these instruments and whether the joint work between them can represent a satisfactory result for protecting against gender-based cyber violence. To this end, we will focus on the existing instruments such as the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (Directive 2010/13), the Digital Services Act and the AI Act, as well as on the GDPR. As regards the instruments currently being reviewed the paper will examine Directive 2011/93 on combating sexual abuse and exploitation of children and child pornography, without neglecting the reference to soft law instruments. With reference to the behaviors covered by the VAW Directive, the chapter will delve into hate speech on the basis of gender and the so-called deep fake. It will also address the importance of preventive measures in the VAW Directive and then conclude with some observations on the need for greater coordination between present and future legal instruments
