Corporate Sustainability: Reporting and Management Accounting

It highlights the role of corporate governance in embedding sustainability into the identity, strategy, business model, and decision-making. Special focus is given to sustainability reporting, key for transparen- cy, accountability, and informed stakeholder decisions. Lexical Priming: Evolution, Evaluation and Applications to English and Japanese
No full textThis pioneering volume builds on Prof. Michael Hoey’s seminal work on Lexical Priming (LP) theory by applying it to specific varieties of Japanese, alongside English, as a first step in corroborating and expanding the validity of LP theory.
The book sets the scene by surveying LP research on specific discourse-types, inspired by Hoey in 2005, and by elucidating the ways in which corpus research, discourse, and psycholinguistics might be taken together to better understand language acquisition and production in ways neither corpus linguistics nor cognitivism alone could envisage. Drawing primarily on a web corpus of Japanese from Q&A fora as well as from data from English language sources, including Hoey’s own studies, his unpublished lecture slides given to us, and more recent corpora, we expand Hoey’s notion of priming and seek to confirm the wider applicability of LP theory. We begin by discussing the many claims of LP, regarding collocation, meaning, grammar, polysemy, cohesion, and creativity, in light of empirical corpus evidence from Japanese and English discourse-types. We also then show how LP theory has considerable explanatory value in fields not previously envisaged, principally evaluation (including evaluative cohesion), modality and politeness, all cognitive phenomena which leave their mark in the linguistic trace we call corpora.

Ski Tourism Shapes the Snow Microbiome on Ski Slopes in the Italian Central Alps
Get PDFWinter sports exert significant anthropogenic pressures on the snow microbiome, affecting the entire alpine ecosystem. The massive usage of artificial snow, human occupation, and the release of xenobiotics like microplastics or ski wax components on ski tracks can profoundly alter snow microbial ecology. Here, we reconstructed the temporal dynamics of the snow microbiome at three sites in the Italian Alps: inside and outside a ski track at the impacted site of Santa Caterina Valfurva and near Cancano lake as an unimpacted control. Using epifluorescence microscopy, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and inferred metagenomics, we found that the snow microbiome inside the track presented a higher load of prokaryotes and viruses. Notably, N2-fixing microorganisms from cryospheric environments and host-associated taxa, like Terrisporobacter, Clostridium sensu stricto, Enterococcus, and Muribaculaceae, and the opportunistic pathogen Citrobacter characterised the impacted site. These microorganisms could originate from the river water used to produce artificial snow during winter. Our findings highlight the complexity and multifunctionality of the snow microbiome, where microorganisms with different ecological propensities can coexist, and the detectable impact of ski tourism, which enriches host-associated and xenobiotic-degrading microorganisms. This underscores the need for systematic monitoring and protection of the snow microbiome in the Alpine environment from anthropogenic threats
Faster chemical mapping assisted by computer vision: insights from glass and ice core samples
No full textRecent advances in high-repetition-rate lasers and fast aerosol transfer facilitate laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) mapping rates of up to megapixels per hour, however, practical limits in time and resources still hamper mapping the chemistry of square centimetre or larger areas of target samples at high resolutions. This is especially relevant for the analysis of deep sections of polar ice cores, motivating exploration of approaches to improve the efficiency of LA-ICP-MS data collection for large-area mapping. Assisted by computer vision, and demonstrated on glass and ice samples, we show how an informed experimental design coupled with computational post processing can contribute to large reductions in measurement times and lead to associated increases in measurement areas. Using various inpainting techniques, we demonstrate how the collection of data can be reduced by up to two thirds while still capturing spatial variability. Although motivated by ice core analysis, these approaches are generalisable to other target matrices and represent a new approach to large-area LA-ICP-MS mapping

No full textThis article reconstructs, through extensive archival documentation, the process of political and cultural mobilization that, between the 1960s and 1980s, led to the reinvention of the Venice Carnival and its transformation into a strategic lever for economic development. The analysis shows how the demographic and productive decline of the historic center encouraged local institutions to identify winter tourism as a tool to revive the lagoon economy, in line with the recommendations of the COSES. Policies aimed at promotion and public–private cooperation helped to de-seasonalize tourist flows and integrate the city into global tourism circuits, while also fostering, in the medium term, the emergence of overtourism dynamics and an increasing dependence on a tourism monoculture
Exploring Korean Confucianism Studies at Keijō Imperial University: The Legacy of Fujitsuka Chikashi (1879–1948)’s Work and His Academic Networks
No full textThis article explores the complex relationship between the study of classical Chinese philosophy in Japan and Korean Confucianism, focusing on Fujitsuka Chikashi (1879–1948), a professor at Keijō Imperial University. Despite his important contributions, Fujitsuka's role has been less examined compared to contemporaries like Takahashi and Abe Yoshio. Serving as a professor of Chinese philosophy (J. Shina tetsugaku) from 1926 to 1940, Fujitsuka concentrated on the interactions of Kim Chŏnghŭi (1786–1856), a key figure in Korean Confucianism, with prominent Qing scholars. This study highlights how Fujitsuka, along with Takahashi, facilitated academic exchanges between Japanese and Korean Confucian circles, thereby influencing the exploitation of Korean Confucianism in Japanese academia in a colonial context. Their sporadic research on Korean Confucianism at KIU played a significant role in shaping Japanese perceptions of Confucianism. The establishment of a formal network of Confucian researchers at KIU not only legitimized Korean Confucian studies among Japanese scholars but also contributed to the emergence of a new academic flow. By examining the dynamic academic environment at KIU, particularly the cluster of Fujitsuka and Takahashi, this study reveals how their individual research merged into a wider Confucian discourses in Japan, that bridged Chinese, Korean, and Japanese Confucian traditions. This collaboration began to align with imperial ideologies, particularly the Pan-Asianist concept of Kōdō Judō (Imperial Way Confucianism). Furthermore, the article contextualizes the connections of Japanese scholarship on Korean Confucianism within the broader discourse of Confucianism in Japan during the colonial period. The Shibunkai, a pivotal organization, exemplifies how Japanese Confucian groups sought to align their studies with imperial ideologies, ultimately reshaping the academic landscape and facilitating Japan's cultural hegemony
