Sufism in the Unated Arab Emirates

    No full text
This essay aims to provide a brief overview of Sufism in the United Arab Emirates, both in its historical and contemporary contexts. Consideration has been given firstly to the increasing support of local leaderships for the Sufi orientation of Islam as an antidote to the spread of Salafism and political Islam; and secondly to the unfortunately scarce written documentation of the presence and revival of the schools to date. In many cases, the contribution of daily press and social media has proved crucial

Japan’s international cooperation on smart city development in Asia: International effort beneath the smart rhetoric in India and in Thailand

This article examines smart cities as a locus for international power struggles, emerged at the gap between their discursive and materialised realities. While the body of research on smart cities is growing, most studies focus on their development within individual nation-states. However, the rapidly growing smart city-related market in Emerging Asia does not allow us to overlook its heavily invested nature. In this context, the article analyses smart city projects in India and Thailand, supported by Japanese international development cooperation. The comparison of these case studies reveal that negotiations occur in discursive terms, with neither party ultimately committed to materializing the agreed-upon socio-technical future. The article argues that, in Japanese international cooperation, the concept of smart cities is more of a showcase than a reality, masking the power struggle between donor and host countries to advance their national interests within the imagined geography of the Indo-Pacific. This international perspective adds new insights to existing research on domestic smart city efforts. Smart cities cannot be taken at face value; additionally, its ideological efficacy must be properly acknowledged. The article emphasises the importance of distinguishing between the imagined, technology-driven future and the real impact on local communities

La rivoluzione del petrolio: miti e realtà dello «shock petrolifero» del 1973

The article presents a synthetic account of the main factors leading to the 1973 "oil shock". It begins with the actions taken by the Arab countries during the October War (or Yom Kippur War), and then moves on to Opec's role in raising prices and show that the events of 1973 were not the result of an exogenous "supply-side shock" that set in motion some unpredictable events, but rather a specific articulation of the crisis in the postwar global economic order, in which the agency of the oil-producing Third World states played a leading role

The reduction of the Arbëresh lexicon and its l effects on syntax

The aim of this paper is to show how the loss of a great number of lexical items in Arbëresh (a minority language genealogically and typologically related to Albanian and spoken in Southern Italy) has led to lack of the corresponding syntactic structures they project. This is the case, for examples, of the conditional complementizer particles po, në, nëse, sikur, all corresponding to the English ‘if’. They are used in standard Albanian to introduce conditional subordinate sentences, some of which show the regular Subject-Verb-Object word order; others, instead, displaying V-second effects, caused by the movement of the verb to a position preceding the subject. These lexical items have completely ceased to be used in the Arbëresh dialects. Therefore, the syntactic structures typical of standard Albanian do not have their counterparts in the Arbëresh dialects, which only have a structure like that of Italian, i.e. they have only a single conditional conjunction (corresponding to the Italian se ‘if’) projecting an unmarked embedded SVO sentence. Based on the distribution of topics in relation to these particles, I will argue that all these complementizers occupy an intermediate position in the left periphery of the clause. In particular, I will assume that they are associated with the CP domain, which is splitted into various positions in the sense of Rizzi (1997)

Gibraltar, Ceuta, Melilla y el Sáhara Occidental: cuatro desafíos euro-españoles

    No full text

What drives sustainable procurement? Insights from the theory of planned behavior

A fundamental research question is what leads some organizations, but not others, to be sustainable in their procurement operations. Extant theoretical frameworks, while valuable, do not fully reflect the nuances of decision-making in procurement operations. We aim to illuminate the role of individual attitudes, capabilities, and behavioral intentions in actualizing sustainable procurement. We find that sustainable purchasing behavior is predominantly shaped by behavioral intention, that is, willingness to pay for sustainability. This behavioral intention is significantly influenced by individual attitudes and capabilities in addition to awareness of consequences and perceived corporate social responsibility engagement but, interestingly, not by individual subjective norms

A deep learning framework for multiplet splitting classification in 1H NMR

One-dimensional 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) stands out as the quickest and simplest among various NMR experimental setups. Unfortunately, it suffers from lengthy annotation times and does not always have a clear and unique interpretation. From NMR discovery, efforts have been dedicated to introducing an automated approach to streamline the characterization of chemical compounds while ensuring consistency of the results across the scientific community. Nonetheless, this remains an ongoing challenge that has garnered renewed interest with the emergence of deep learning techniques. Here, we present MuSe Net, a novel supervised probabilistic deep learning framework that can emulate the tasks performed by an expert spectroscopist in annotating one-dimensional NMR spectra generated by small molecules. Considering only the spectrum, MuSe Net detects and classifies multiplets with up to four coupling constants for their splitting phenotype, providing a segmentation of the spectral range. We exploit uncertainty quantification to produce a confidence score to both assess classification reliability and to detect signals that do not fit into any other phenotype class. The results of the evaluation against 48 experimental 1H NMR spectra of small molecules annotated by experts demonstrate that MuSe Net can deal with anomalies and unclear signals while correctly classifying multiplets and detecting overlapping peaks

OVOSE: Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation in Event-Based Cameras

    No full text
Event cameras, known for low-latency operation and superior performance in challenging lighting conditions, are suitable for sensitive computer vision tasks such as semantic segmentation in autonomous driving. However, challenges arise due to limited event-based data and the absence of large-scale segmentation benchmarks. Current works are confined to closed-set semantic segmentation, limiting their adaptability to other applications. In this paper, we introduce OVOSE, the first Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation algorithm for Event cameras. OVOSE leverages synthetic event data and knowledge distillation from a pre-trained image-based foundation model to an event-based counterpart, effectively preserving spatial context and transferring open-vocabulary semantic segmentation capabilities. We evaluate the performance of OVOSE on two driving semantic segmentation datasets DDD17, and DSEC-Semantic, comparing it with existing conventional image open-vocabulary models adapted for event-based data. Similarly, we compare OVOSE with state-of-the-art methods designed for closed-set settings in unsupervised domain adaptation for event-based semantic segmentation. OVOSE demonstrates superior performance, showcasing its potential for real-world applications. The code is available at https://github.com/ram95d/OVOSE
