Blank(et) Spaces: Weaving a Transfeminist Geography of Precarity in Academia
The paper presents a collective autoethnography of fourteen transfeminist scholars from diverse geographical backgrounds, exploring the experience of precarity within the Italian academic landscape. We have developed a supportive network, a virtual space where we could share our struggles in the competitive and isolating neoliberal academic system, away from its toxicity that often leaves us exhausted and burdened. Responding to the call from the transfeminist journal Lüvofor contributions on feminist and decolonial geographies, we engaged in a reflexive process that led us to imagine ourselves as islands within an archipelago, ultimately transforming into a patchwork blanket that is a metaphor for our solidarity and interconnectedness. We examine themes ofloneliness, anxiety, and hypermobility, revealing how these experiences intersect with gender dynamics and academic hierarchies. Our work is about care and community, as we wove together our stories to challenge the neoliberal structures of academia. Through this collective work, we aim to illuminate the complexities of our experiences and foster alliances. We hope that others will join us in our struggle
Emergy analysis for addressing the complexity of climate actions
In this Commentary, we advocate the use of emergy(spelled with “m”) analysis to address and quantify –alongside with the scientific ones – the legal andsocial aspects that take part in the planning ofclimate policies and actions. Emergy analysis issuitable to approach the complexity of both localand global climate-related issues, offering apeculiar epistemology that overcomes theanthropocentric nature of current measures. At thesame time, it allows the assessment of both natureand human-based flows of resources within athermodynamic quantitative framework
Towards a disease digital twin: Howard T. Odum's legacy for cancer biology and medicine
Complex systems – such as ecosystems – display non-linear, self-organizing behaviors that go beyond simple
cause-effect relationships among individual components: the presence of feedback networks enables responses
and adaptations that can only be understood by "zooming out" to wider perspectives. In this regard, moving from
general systems theory and thermodynamics, H.T. Odum made lasting contributions in developing a quantitative
approach for understanding the nature of these fundamental relationships and the dynamical representation of
their emergent properties. Among all the realms in which his work was source of novel and influential ideas (e.g.,
ecology, energy, economics), a new possibility, still underexplored, appears applying the energy system language
to study complex biomedical systems. In this framework, complex diseases such incurable cancers and as self-
immune diseases arise as systemic features, manifesting the malfunctioning of regulatory control processes
and the interactions/crosstalk between cells and their micro-environment. We provide a conceptualization of
how Odum’s heritage can help to address the complexity of these malignant, complex ecosystem, laying the
foundation for an analytical, dynamical representation of a Disease Digital-Twin, focusing on the evolutionary
scenarios for classes of diseases, at different hierarchical and timescales. Finally, we discuss how using data
coming from innovative experimental techniques (small Tumor Ecosystems) provides powerful tools for developing
a holistic framework for patients’ treatment and general individual health care

The ethnographic analysis of a recent incident –the death of an indigenous teacher in a road accident– reveals the everyday impact of the mechanization of indigenous life in Lowland South America and, in particular, the dilemmas involved by growing use and dissemination of motorcycles among the Chacobo (Panoan) of Bolivian Amazonia. The accident becomes a social drama that needs to be interpreted in terms of several contexts of Chacobo culture and, at the same time, reveals broader social, economic, technological, symbolic and environmental transformations that are currently shaping indigenous life in Lowland South America

L’étude en cours des données issues des notes et de la documentation collectées par Olivier Pelon lors de ses sondages permet déjà de suggérer que l’habitat de la fin du Prépalatial et du début du Protopalatial identifié par les fouilleurs dans l’ensemble désigné par le terme « Maisons Sud » s’étendait davantage à l’ouest (sondages Iα, Iβ et Iγ et réexploré dans les sondages Iε, Iθ et XVIII 5). Plus loin au sud-ouest, il faudra encore déterminer si le sondage Iδ a mis au jour des restes du même habitat, ou s’il s’agit là de vestiges distincts éventuellement en relation à l’occupation sous et/ou au sein du Bâtiment Dessenne. Il faudra également vérifier si, comme c’est le cas pour le
matériel issu des anciennes fouilles dans les Maisons A et B, l’occupation de l’habitat ancien au sud du Palais de Malia semble s’achever au cours du Minoen Moyen IB. Comme l’a révélé l’étude du matériel issu des fouilles anciennes, le matériel plus tardif, Minoen Moyen II, semble en effet être mieux représenté dans la zone de la Maison C et du Redan Sud‐Est, c’est‐à‐dire au sud‐est du Palais
The evolution of the Polar-AOD network: towards a comprehensive repository supporting efforts for integrated polar observing systems
Atmospheric aerosols play a crucial role in Earth's atmospheric environment and are among its most variable components. In polar regions, aerosols originate from both natural and anthropogenic sources. In the Arctic, the majority of the aerosol mass consists of oceanic sea-salt, mineral dust, non-sea-salt sulphate, and products of biomass burning (Tomasi et al. 2015). In contrast, anthropogenic aerosols are dominated by black carbon (BC) and nitrate, which are signatures of traffic and industrial emissions (Quinn et al. 2007). Polar aerosols can have significant regional effects by interacting with incoming solar radiation and by altering the albedo of the surface-atmosphere system (IPCC 2023). To address and study these effects, the Polar-AOD project was proposed for the first time in 1999 by Claudio Tomasi from the National Research Council of Italy. This initiative aims to characterize the means, variability, and trends of aerosol properties in polar regions. Its primary goal is to connect observational stations measuring aerosol properties along the atmospheric vertical column. These observations provide critical data to quantify aerosol physical and radiative properties at high latitudes, including seasonal background concentrations derived from aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements, spectral characterizations, and the influence of natural and anthropogenic processes on the radiative balance of the surface and atmosphere. This project fosters collaboration among scientists in the field of photometry at both poles. It also incorporates the stellar and lunar photometry data, which help to address historical gaps in AOD climatologies during the polar night. By filling these gaps, the Polar-AOD project contributes to a comprehensive understanding of aerosol behavior and its impacts on the polar regions. To support this effort, a new web platform has been recently developed to store and share data and metadata from photometric measurements, forming a polar AOD archive. This archive, managed by CNR through GeoNetwork, enables the organization and search of spatially referenced resources while allowing each scientific group to manage its own data, choosing to share metadata only or both data and metadata for specific sites or campaigns within the Polar-AOD network. The new data portal will be presented, along with the maps of the stations and instruments, and the Polar-AOD metadata catalogue
