Family reunification policies in Italy Ambivalences, discrimination, resistance
The Chapter analyses the migrant family reunification phenomenon and deepens how the migrant family is constructed in the political and administrative discourse, both at EU and Italian level, in order to understand the effect of the family reunification policies on family structures and their material conditions and social life. Italian migration and reunification policies – which implement European directives but, at the same time, constituted a model for the European legislation – select the family members of migrants admitted to reunification, on the basis of their productive capacity for the economy of the country of destination, identified in the spouse, the minor children and, only in exceptional cases, the parents. In doing so, the reunification policies act a process of institutional and legislative “nuclearization” and “vulnerabilization” of the migrant family. This has negative repercussions on the reunited family in emotional and relational terms, as well as in terms of conciliation between working times and family times. Moreover, by imposing material requirements – especially relating to job, wage and housing dimension –, reunification policies are configured as policies for the regulation and discipline of migrant work and, consequently, work as a whole. Here, then, these policies configure boundaries and constraints within which the migrant families are situated, outlining a civic stratification scenario and a socio-working disciplinary device, highlighting the destination society’s ambivalences, as well as tensions and contradictions between (labour) market, State and the society itself. That is, the dimension of state policies clashes, on the one hand, with that of the needs of the market and, on the other hand, with that of the symbolic meanings, expectations and moral values of society. Within this dialectic, made up of ambivalences and contradictions, the trajectories and the forms of resistance of migrant workers and reunited families take shape. Therefore, the process of family reunification is configured as a multifaceted prism, in which lights and shadows coexist, but also as a field of struggle in which different social actors collide, with their own interests and agency: State, (labour) market, society and migrant families
Exploring disease prevalence in Italy: a web application utilizing sample-based predictions from a Bayesian spatio-temporal model with external validation
Disease prevalence data is an invaluable resource in population
monitoring due to its easy representation and immediate interpretability.
However, accessing such information can often be challenging.
Although, sampling methods provide an efficient alternative for inferring
population prevalence and collecting correlated risk factor information,
challenges arise due to potential under representation, necessitating robust modeling approaches. Hierarchical Bayesian models may offer flexible solution to integrate prior knowledge and considering individual and environmental factors in disease prevalence estimation. However, interpreting complex statistical models poses challenges for non-experts. To address this, a user-friendly web interface leveraging Shiny is proposed, facilitating comparison and validation of disease prevalence estimates.
This infrastructure aims to enhance accessibility and reliability, with potential for broader applicability and future improvements
Police Militarization and Local Sheriff Elections
We investigate how transfers of military equipment in the United States through the 1033 Program impact the electoral performance of sheriffs that receive a significant share of equipment while directly accountable to voters. To address this question, we have compiled a unique dataset covering 7281 sheriff elections in 2714 counties between 2006 and 2016. Our findings indicate that an increase in military transfers to the sheriff’s office, from no transfers to the 25th percentile, increases the probability of the incumbent being reelected by 5.8–12.5 percentage points. This is due to an increase in the number of votes cast for the incumbent while there is no effect on the total number of voters participating in the election. Our heterogeneity results demonstrate that voters tend to reward military equipment transfers, especially when local newspapers are present and in Republican-leaning small counties, providing novel insights into voter responsiveness in local elections
Modeling nitrogen recovery and water transport in gas-permeable membranes
This study presents a new modeling approach for nitrogen recovery in gas-permeable membrane (GPM) contactors, including both ammonia and water transport dynamics. A distinct feature of the model is its capacity to model water transport across the membrane, which has been overlooked in most publications. Osmotic pressure differences are used to predict the behavior of ammonia and water transport in the GPM contactor. Experiments carried out to develop, test and calibrate the model examined the dynamics of ammonia and water transport through the GPM contactor at various nitrogen concentrations. Specifically, the GPM contactor was tested for nitrogen recovery from high-strength synthetic wastewaters (2.4–10.6 g N/L) at 35 °C and at pH 9. The initial volume of the trapping solution (diluted H2SO4) was 10 times lower than that of the synthetic wastewater, aiming to concentrate the recovered nitrogen. The estimated ammonia transport constant (Km) ranged between (1.2 - 2.1)·10–6 m/s and water transport constant Kw between (2.8 - 8.2)·10–10 m/(s bar). Numerical determination of the model parameters revealed high R2 values, demonstrating strong agreement with experimental data
Introducing Twin Transitions in Family Businesses: A Triple‐Bottom‐Line Perspective
This paper explores the twin transition in family businesses, examining the parallel development of digital technologies and sustainable business practices, both of which are part of the current European agenda for a more sustainable future. While not widely recognised for their investments in disruptive innovation and digitalisation, family businesses (FBs) are more inclined to perform incremental changes, often driven by a longstanding commitment to sustainability and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. This contrast makes them an ideal subject for a more in-depth exploration of these transformative trends. The aim of this study is to adopt a broader perspective in twin-transition analysis, incorporating social and economic performance alongside environmental sustainability in relation to digital transformation. Therefore, we establish a connection between the triple-bottom-line (TBL) approach and digital innovation in the unique reality of FBs. Our research approach is based on interviews conducted across multiple studies that explore FB dynamics and digitalisation in different industries and countries, supplemented by insights from secondary data. We analyse data through a directed qualitative content analysis. By adopting a broader perspective on sustainability—shifting from an exclusive focus on the environmental dimension to a TBL approach—our findings position FBs as key players in the twin transition, excelling at both addressing sustainability challenges and fostering digital innovation. These companies should prioritise aligning their strategies with equitable, viable and bearable principles in line with the TBL approach by fostering socio-emotional wealth, engaging younger generations in digital innovation and implementing work–life balance initiatives that enhance employee satisfaction and sustainability. Most of these strategies can also be replicated by non-family businesses, establishing FBs as exemplary leaders in the twin-transition journey
Accessible authentication methods for persons with diverse cognitive abilities
The technological world offers a plethora of resources that could be potentially engaging for users with diverse cognitive abilities. However, access to these resources is often secured by authentication mechanisms that can pose accessibility barriers. To comprehend how these mechanisms could be better designed to enhance accessibility, we conducted a literature review and subsequently conducted a study, gathering empirical data through online questionnaires administered to 34 users with diverse cognitive abilities. Our investigation and analysis focused on their experiences with various authentication methods, aiming to identify the challenges they commonly encounter. This paper's primary contribution lies in presenting evidence that many conventional authentication approaches lack accessibility. Additionally, we advocate for the adoption of biometric authentication systems as a promising direction, emerging as the most accessible solution based on our study results. Furthermore, drawing insights from existing works, we extracted and synthesized a set of guidelines that we believe IT experts should consider when developing an accessible authentication system. We validated these guidelines through our questionnaire, emphasizing which ones our user group deems most relevant

When Customer Involvement Promotes Innovation Performance: The Moderating Roles of Coordination Mechanisms with Customers and External Collaboration Strategies
This study examines the bright and dark side of customer involvement in new product
development activities by analysing how the firm’s coordination mechanisms with
customers and its external collaboration strategy affect its innovation performance.
While the innovation literature typically considers customers pivotal sources of
innovation, we show that the relationship between customer involvement and
innovation performance, measured by new-to-the-firm and new-to-the-market products
and processes, is not linear and that there is a tension between involvement and
dependence. We test our hypotheses using a unique dataset of 339 Italian knowledge
intensive business services firms and find that firms that are able to leverage customer
knowledge in the context of innovation use coordination mechanisms that strengthen
the willingness of customers and organisational members to acquire and share
knowledge, and develop external collaboration strategies that improve the variety of
accessible knowledge for the firms
Jimmy Carter, Zbigniew Brzezinski e i paradossi del “totalitarismo sovietico” (1977-1981)
This essay moves from Jimmy Carter's Annapolis speech of June 1978 to question the meaning of the recovery of the language of "Soviet totalitarianism" in US presidential rhetoric, carried out by Carter for the first time on that very occasion. Investigating the origins and implications of Jimmy Carter's lexical choice allows us to shed light on an important passage, not only in the history of the foreign policy foreign policy and political communication of a specific administration, but of the broader cultural history of the United States
