    MANIPULATION OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS USING CONDITIONAL VAE ON FACE POINT CLOUDS GENERATED BY MEDIAPIPE

    A large-scale face point cloud tabular data was created by converting two-dimensional facial images of a straight face and a smiling face into a 3D point cloud using MediaPipe. Two types of Conditional VAE (Normal Conditional VAE and Hyperspherical Conditional VAE) were used to mutually deform the created tabular data between the two facial expressions of a straight face and a smiling face, and a comparative evaluation was performed. The results showed that the method using Hyperspherical Conditional VAE was superior from both the neural network and human perspectives

    ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ASSAY SYSTEM FOR SPERM-PACKET-INDUCING FACTORS IN EUDORINA

    Eudorina sp. (Eudorina) is a volvocine green algae at an evolutionarily intermediate stage between Chlamydomonas and Volvox, in which gametogenesis is induced by nitrogen depletion or by a pheromone. Although previous studies suggest that gametogenesis (formation of sperm packets) in Eudorina is induced by proteinaceous factors in male culture supernatant, its molecule has not been identified, mainly because the sperm-packet is not efficiently produced in the current assay system for the activity. To establish an efficient experimental system, I first selected male strains that efficiently form sperm packets from progenies of a cross between males and females strains. Next, I examined cell-culture conditions for efficient sperm-packet differentiation and found an improved condition. The inducing activity of sperm packet in male culture supernatant was fractionated by a CM-Sepharose column chromatography, and the activity in the eluted fraction was measured using the new assay system. Result shows that the factor is partially bound to the cation exchange resin, suggesting that the factor has a positive net charge in a neutral pH condition. Further purification will identify the factor for sperm packet formation and reveal mechanisms for gametogenesis in Eudorina

    Angular Leaf Spot of Cucumber is an important disease of cucurbits. The efficacy of Aluminium Potassium Sulfate (APS) was investigated in order to develop an agent that can be used for seed disinfection and at the young seedling stage against this disease. APS was more effective than inorganic copper flowable in the treatment of young seedlings. APS was also more effective than oxytetracycline wettable powder in seed disinfection. The results will make it possible to establish a systematic control for Angular Leaf Spot of cucurbits using seed disinfection with APS and treatment at the young seedling stage.Bacterial Wilt of Tomato is one of the most difficult diseases to control. Examined control methods that can be used during the growing season against this disease. The mixture of Talalomyces flavus wettable powder® (TF WP), compound APS and compound Tm-01 provide greater suppressions against this disease than mixtures of APS and compound Tm-01 or TF WP, APS, Tm-01 alone. The results suggest that the mixture of APS and Tm-01 has an additive effect on TF WP

    Effects of Bilingualism on University Students and its Implications for Teaching and Learning in EFL Contexts.

    This research is a contribution to a continued exploration of second or foreign language learning and its consequences on the personality of the individual learner. It is an exploration that acknowledges bilingualism as fluid, migratory and continuously mutating, with emergent personality simultaneously embodying and transcending the second language input and the various hypotheses which have been identified and postulated by scholars. Specifically, the study explores the presence or absence of personality changes when using a second or a foreign language and provides some accounts for its causes. It also examines the correlation between the participants’ language proficiency and their various experiences during their study abroad programs.Epistemologically, the study employs the quantitative core area of philosophical study and an eclectic mixture of approaches that include a case study, descriptive and comparative methodologies. Subsequently, we are able to investigate the personality changes in terms of mental and physical changes and its attendant causes such as images of language, interlocutors, and the speech contexts. Our data shows that physical changes occur easily compared to mental changes due to the ‘mimicry’ nature of the foreign language. We are also able to demonstrate that language proficiency based on CEFR scales has little effects on personality changes. Rather, opportunities for speaking in English language is a major factor in personality changes.This study is expected to demonstrate to foreign language professors at the university level in Japan, and the university administrators responsible for study abroad programs, the essential features of bilingual students and their expected behavior in the classroom especially after their foreign language study experiences

    Human Activity Recognition with Millimeter-wave Radar Point Clouds Using Feature-fusion based Neural Networks

    This study presents a human activity recognition method based on millimeter-wave radar point clouds. A feature-fuse neural network was proposed to combine different features extracted from two subnet. First, millimeter-wave radar point cloud data is preprocessed into different formats, such as 3D voxels, 2D dual-views picture. Second, the voxels and views are fed into 3D and 2D neural networks to extract spatial and temporal information, respectively. The features extracted from the two networks are fused to enhance recognition accuracy. The research introduces innovative preprocessing techniques for both voxels and bi-views data, specifically dynamic denoising and Doppler information embedding, and demonstrated their practicality. The dataset used for the experiments contains 10 different human activity categories. Unlike other studies, it focuses on recognizing both abnormal and normal activities, particularly those that are similar to abnormal ones. This research aims to explore potential scenarios for home health monitoring and achieved a recognition accuracy of 95.30%, showing an improvement of 2% to 7.8% compared to the respective single networks. The feature fusion network model showed an accuracy rate of 95.40% during the testing for detecting abnormal activities. For challenging activity categories, the feature fusion network is able to distinguish between them more easily compared to a single network

    The author dealt with quantitative evaluation of RMA and subjective evaluation of aerial imaging by Retroreflective Mirror Array (RMA) for the practical application of RMA. it is a device that displays aerial imaging, and the author has been dealing with research towards the practical application of it. for the practical application of it, it is important to evaluate what kind of the aerial imaging by it and to discuss what kind of use cases the aerial imaging is appropriate for based on the results of the evaluation. however, RMA have an internal structure that differ from existing methods for displaying aerial images, and RMA and the aerial imaging by it have not been evaluated, so it is not clear what kind of aerial imaging. In this paper, the author dealt with quantifying the resolution characteristics of RMA using Modulation Transfer Function and analysing a cause of distortion of the aerial imaging by it. as a subjective evaluation of the aerial imaging by RMA, questionnaire survey was conducted among people who experienced the demonstration exhibition using RMA, and the results were analysed. The analysis dealt with quantifying the subjective evaluation using scale values corresponding to degree of Japanese common expressions, and discussed methods for the subjective evaluation of aerial imaging

    Nono-, Micro- and Macro-scale Coupling Evaluations of High Temperature Characteristics of Zirconia Matrix Composites

    In the past decades, ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) have been attracting much attention for high-temperature structural applications. Ceramics are characterized by high hardness, high corrosion resistance, high heat resistance, high wear resistance, and low thermal expansion to be used for turbine blades of aircraft engines and others. It is important to not only improve fracture toughness but also creep and creep-fatigue resistances for high-temperature structures. In this study, SiC particles, SiC whiskers, α-alumina (Al_2O_3) particles, Ni particles, Ti powders, and SUS304 powders were prepared and added to partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) for enhancement of high-temperature strength of the materials through the interaction due to the stress-induced transformation of PSZ and strengthening by the additives. The effects of the additives on the strengthening of PSZ were investigated on nano-, micro- and macro-scale mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Nano- and micro-scale indentation hardness, elastic modulus and damping properties were evaluated using high-temperature nanoindentation equipment. For macro scale properties, biaxial bending tests were conducted at RT and 300℃. The effect of the additives on mechanical characteristics of PSZ were investigated by a coupling of nano-, micro- and macroscale analysis at elevated temperatures
