On the Expression of Results by employing Passive, Intransitive verbs and Related Constructions in Japanese, Korean, Russian and Estonian
本研究では,人為的事態の結果の表現を構文間の連関も考慮に入れ,その使用傾向について多言語パラレルコーパスを用いて通言語的に考察し,日本語は自動詞文の使用が好まれるが,エストニア語は不定人称文,ロシア語や韓国語は受動文の使用が自然であること,その構文的特徴は事態把握の主観性・客観性が影響していることを明らかにした。In this study, we used a multilingual parallel corpus of Japanese, Estonian, Korean, and Russian to examine the tendency to use expressions describing the results of intentional events cross‒linguistically, taking into account the relationships among constructions. The results show that the structural features of these languages are influenced by the subjectivity and objectivity of the construal of the situation. The two main suggestions are as follows.(I) All of these languages use intransitive sentences, but Japanese uses them particularly frequently.(II) The syntactic features of intransitive sentences, passive sentences, indefinite‒personal sentences and the shite‒aru constructions are related to the construal of a situation, and are characterized by whether the patient is the subject or the object, and whether the agent is explicit or not. These results suggest that Japanese is more subjective‒construal oriented than the other three languages
The Pursuit of Perfect English : Japanese Ideology Regarding L1-like Pronunciation
The idea of English as an international language has gained a refreshed momentum in the discussions around English education policy in Japan. To detect a shift in learners’ attitudes towards Japanese English (JE), and to elucidate the ideology they embrace regarding their motivation for improving their proficiency, a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 112 advanced-level learners of English from a university in Tokyo. It was revealed that they (1) display a lingering preference for US English, despite increased exposure to World Englishes; (2) evaluate JE less favourably in competence and status dimensions than other Asian Englishes; and (3) are not content with simply achieving a high level of proficiency, but are still dedicated to acquiring L1-like speech as their ultimate goal. This quintessentially Japanese perfectionism is reflected in the word eigodo, or ‘the way of English’, where do (/doː/) is a stoic value system in the process of mastering artistic skills. The findings demonstrate how culture-specific ideology serves as an underlying mechanism that ensures a reconciliation between a preference for L1 English and an inferiority to other L2 Englishes
Fabrication of BaTi_2O_5-BaTiO_3 composite films by the sol-injecting electrophoretic deposition and evaluation of dielectric properties
Composite films of BaTi_2O_5(BT2) and BaTiO_3(BT) were fabricated by two different electrophoresis deposition (EPD) methods, sol-dropping EPD method and sol-injecting EPD method. The composite film obtained by the sol-injecting EPD method had more uniform thickness and higher dielectric constant than that obtained by the sol-dropping method. Only for the composite film by the sol-injecting EPD method, a peak around 480 ℃ indicating the Curie point for BaTi_2O_5 was confirmed from the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant
INFLUENCE OF VIEW ANGLE IN PERCEIVING PASSABILITY OF AN APERTURE : ENHANCEMENT OF PERCEPTION THROUGH USE OF PERIPHERAL VISION
Humans can compare the shoulder width to aperture and perceive passability, using only vision. However, the actual aperture size cannot be estimated from the apparent aperture size. In previous studies, a method was proposed to estimate the velocity from the background of the aperture and to estimate the actual size of the aperture. This study incorporated the concept of the field of view into the method of previous studies and proposed a new method. It was demonstrated through simulation that the method is effective in velocity estimation and aperture estimation. Additionally, experiments were conducted to verify whether the method is used in human perception. As a result, it was found that the extent of the view angle contributes to clearer aperture perception
