FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF CARBON NANOTUBE/ALUMINIUM COMPOSITES FABRICATED BY SPARK PLASMA SINTERING

    Get PDF
In recent years, carbon nanotube (CNT) has been attractive to be used for reinforcements in metal matrix composites (MMCs) to be applied to structural members because CNT has distinguished characteristics such as lightweight, high elastic modulus, high strength and others. However, wider application of CNT and its composites has not been achieved due to difficulty to disperse CNT in the MMCs to efficiently obtain the expected excellent properties. In this study, CNT was uniformly dispersed using chemical and mechanical treatments, such as an ultrasonic treatment with dispersant in an organic solvent, a dry ball milling and post-sintering hot rolling. CNT/Al composites were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of these treatments on state of dispersion of CNT and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Microstructures of the composites were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) . The mechanical properties were investigated on fatigue properties and anisotropic tensile behavior

An octopi inspired soft arm manipulator actuated by tendon-like string configurations

    Get PDF
Octopi exhibit impressive manipulation abilities and adaptive intelligent behavior. By interpreting their biological structure and their motion generation strategy, a soft robotic continuum arm manipulator inspired by octopi, is presented in this paper. The proposed arm exploits the combination of soft silicone material offering high rates of flexibility and deformability, with rigid supportive disks mimicking the muscular hydrostats present in biological octopi. The arm is actuated by tendon-like string configurations, driving 5 motions in all 3 body planes: Lateral right and left motion in the sagittal plane, ventral and dorsal motion in the coronal plane and helical torsion motion in the transverse plane. By using the compliant body of the proposed arm mimicking the anatomical morphology of the octopi and the 5 motions generated by it, the arm can grasp, move and lift various objects, without previous sensing, and without the usage of suctions cups, making it a powerful low-complexity tool for object manipulation in complex environments

Ryohin Keikaku’s Design Management Development during a Management Crisis : Former Chairman Tadamitsu Matsu’s Strategy

    Get PDF
Developing a relevant design management for a firm has been regarded as an essential strategy when a firm is facing a crisis situation. This article explores how Ryohin Keikaku was able to survive a serious crisis during the early 2000s. Although the company’s Muji brand had been popular among urban consumers, their business model and store operations were fragile compared to competitors such as Uniqlo or Nitori. Mr. Tadamitsu Matsui became CEO in 2001 and started to reform the company’s system by introducing a design management which was capable of linking design, innovation, and an effective business model to expand customer bases. By analysing interviews with three CEOs and reviewing previous studies regarding the company, we examine how Rhohin Keikaku were able to solve various problems and achieve a successful revival

A study of training during tapering in middle- and long- distance runners in Japan

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the training during the tapering period in middle- and long-distance runners in Japan. Method: In this study, 228 subjects (60 junior high school students, 76 high school students, 58 university students, and 34 runners from company teams) were included in the analysis. Changes in the duration of the tapering period, and the mileage, intensity, and frequency of jogging, interval running, and pace running during the tapering period were investigated. For statistical analysis, the χ^2 test and residual analysis were used. Result: 53.0% of the runners, excluding middle school students, answered that the tapering period was less than five days. Regarding training during the tapering period, except for the junior high school students, most of the races decreased the mileage of training and maintained the intensity and frequency of training. On the other hand, junior high school students had significantly more increased training mileage and frequency during the tapering period. Conclusion: Runners in Japan may have a short tapering period. Junior high school students may be using strategies that contrast with those recommended
