Examining the Utility of the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) vs. Cognitive Mapping and Motivational Interviewing (CM/MI) to Provide Person-Centered Care (PCC) for People with Parkinson’s Disease (PwPD)
Get PDFBackground: Parkinson’s disease (PD) limits occupational engagement and quality of life. Clinicians need tools to help understand the lived experiences of people with PD to provide more person-centered care (PCC). The Canadian Occupational Performance Model (COPM) is one tool used with this population, but its predetermined categories may be limiting. In contrast, Cognitive Mapping and Motivational Interviewing (CM/MI) is a non-standardized method that may provide more insight. Objective: To identify the benefits of the COPM to CM/MI in delivering more person-centered care (PCC). Methodology: A qualitative phenomenological self-study was used. Data collection compared the assessments and reflected on determining if data led to PCC. The analysis examined the emerging themes. Findings: The benefits of using the COPM to CM/MI to deliver better PCC were identified. Addressing Psychosocial Client Factors in People with Cancer: An Occupational Therapy Guidebook
Get PDFPeople with cancer have an increased risk of impaired occupational engagement and occupational performance due to the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial impacts of cancer and cancer treatment (Duker & Sleight, 2019; Pergolotti et al., 2016; Polo & Smith, 2018).
The involvement of occupational therapy (OT) in the care of people with cancer remains limited, resulting in a finite amount of literature on OT interventions to address this population (Pergolotti et al., 2016). The primary focus of OT for people with cancer has been on physical client factors and interventions, and people with cancer report that their psychosocial factors are being overlooked (Sleight & Duker, 2016).
OT practitioners have expressed confidence in the use of physical interventions because of its supporting literature (Hunter et al., 2017). Weis (2015) emphasizes that there is a limited understanding of psychosocial interventions for people with cancer. 69% of surveyed OT practitioners reported they desired more evidence-based guidance on OT interventions for people with cancer (Duker & Sleight, 2019).https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2023/1019/thumbnail.jp

Sleep Disturbances and Children: An Occupation-Based Program for Parents and Caregivers of Children with Spastic Cerebral Palsy
Get PDFParents of children with spastic cerebral palsy have barriers to improve their child\u27s quality of life and well-being due to a lack of knowledge regarding the benefits of sleep and rest, as well as the potential causes of sleep disturbances and home-based solutions. The problem is that there is a lack of occupation-based programs for parents that address sleep regulation to improve sleep participation for children with spastic cerebral palsy, which results in difficulties with sleep initiation and maintenance of sleep (Hulst et al. 2020, Löwing et al., 2020, Petersen et al. 2020). The purpose of this program development type capstone project is to create and implement an occupation-based program that increases parents’ knowledge and resources on sleep regulation for children with spastic cerebral palsy to increase sleep participation (Hulst et al 2020). The program educated parents on the occupation of sleep and rest which included the causes of sleep disturbances, positioning, and bed time routines. In the future, occupational therapists can increase advocacy efforts to improve awareness of the value of education for parents of children with spastic cerebral palsy on the occupation of sleep and rest.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2023/1043/thumbnail.jp
