Overuse Injury Prevention Program for High School and College Flutists

    Get PDF
College and high school flutists face significant health risks, including a high prevalence of playing-related injuries and associated psychological stress and social pressures to perform despite the pain. The asymmetrical posture and specific hand and arm positions required for playing the flute increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries due to repetitive, non-ergonomic movements. This program addresses these unique health challenges by integrating occupational therapy (OT) principles, providing comprehensive education, and injury prevention and management strategies. The program seeks to raise awareness of overuse injuries, enhance self-confidence in managing stress, and implement injury prevention techniques. Expected outcomes include a deeper understanding of injury susceptibility, effective prevention strategies, healthy practice routines, and improved overall career longevity and quality of life for college flutists.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1005/thumbnail.jp

Enhancing Art & Creative Expression Engagement in an Inpatient Pediatric Setting

    Get PDF
The purpose of this capstone project is to enhance art and creative expressive engagement within an inpatient pediatric setting. A primary focus for occupational therapy in children’s hospitals is on activities of daily living and other tasks associated with independent living (O’Brien & Kuhaneck, 2020). Creative activities such as art have been historically used throughout occupational therapy, however, the use of art and creative expression has declined in recent decades (Müllersdorf & Ivarsson, 2016). The presented capstone project focused on developing a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, occupation-based, art-focused program in an inpatient pediatric setting for children and families by integrating and applying occupational therapy scholarship of practice, advocacy, and leadership. Based on the current evidence-based literature review, a gap in the literature suggests the need for increasing education on the use of art and creative expression in inpatient pediatric settings. The HeART and CommUNITY Handbook book was created to give education on enhancing art and creative expression for children and families.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1046/thumbnail.jp

Outdoor Recreation for People With Spinal Cord Injuries: An Educational Video Series

    Get PDF
More than 15 million people globally are living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Only half of people with SCI engage in leisure activities and approximately 71% of the population reports dissatisfaction in their leisure participation. There are numerous intrinsic and extrinsic barriers that lead to these significant declines in leisure exploration and participation, including lack of knowledge and inaccurate accessible online information. In correlation with these barriers, occupational therapy practitioners underutilize leisure participation during the rehabilitation process for people with SCI and this is an underreported topic in the literature. Occupational therapy practitioners and people with SCI lack knowledge of adapted outdoor recreational activities that people with SCI can engage in. The purpose of this project was to create an educational video series to promote participation in adapted outdoor recreational activities among people with SCI. An educational video series containing 18 videos was created through the culmination of literature review, communication with stakeholders, and gathering data during capstone site experience. Topics incorporated in this video series include background of SCI and outdoor recreation, precautions, equipment, transfers, participation expectations for cervical and thoracic level SCI, and opportunities for outdoor recreation participation in Colorado. The outdoor recreational activities that are reviewed in this educational video series include archery, cycling, kayaking, and paddleboarding

    Get PDF
Practice Problem: This project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a mentorship-based onboarding program versus a standard program without mentorship. PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was (P), In newly hired APCs did the inclusion of mentorship in the onboarding process (I) lead to higher levels of general self-efficacy compared to standard orientation practices lacking mentorship (C), within an 8-week timeframe (T)? Evidence: Nine articles were reviewed, revealing that standardized mentorship, structured orientation, and tailored support for professional development are critical strategies to boost confidence and retention among healthcare professionals. Intervention: A standardized onboarding program that incorporated mentorship was implemented to boost the self-efficacy of APCs. Outcome: The survey revealed that compared to those in the standard program, participants in the mentorship-based onboarding program showed significantly higher confidence levels. Despite a low response rate, the results suggested that the mentorship-based program enhanced confidence in various areas. Conclusion: The project demonstrated that a standardized onboarding program with mentorship significantly improved the role performance and confidence of APCs, aligning with Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) principles

Advance Care Planning in Rehabilitation: Training Nurses and Social Workers to Facilitate Discussions

    Get PDF
Practice Problem: Patients and healthcare workers fail to hold advance care planning (ACP) discussions. Social workers perceive a lack of time and feel unprepared to hold ACP conversations. PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: Do patients in acute inpatient rehabilitation (P) who receive education and resources about ACP from trained nurses and social workers (I) accept and participate in ACP (O) compared to prior standards of care (C) while on the rehabilitation unit (T)? Evidence: The public and healthcare workers have limited knowledge of ACPs and their role in these discussions. People are more likely to hold ACP discussions when they are outpatients or in care transitions, such as rehabilitation. Intervention: Train a social worker and nurse champion with Respecting Choices’ “First Steps Advance Care Planning Conversations Guide: Adults with Chronic Illness.” Educate nursing staff during staff meetings and shift huddles about advance directives, advance care planning, unit processes, and their role in this discussion. Outcome: Patients were 1.5 times more likely to admit to having advance directives and 1.64 times more likely to ask for more information when asked by trained nurses than when nurses were not trained. Conclusion: Training staff and providing role clarification improved the frequency of advance care planning discussions. The project was limited by several new processes, a small sample size, and its short duration

Use of Adventure to Address Play Deprivation in Children and Teens Raised in Conflict

    Get PDF
Youth raised in conflict often experience extrinsic and intrinsic factors that contribute to play deprivation and occupational injustice. These factors are reviewed through interviews with stakeholders and participants and observed while embedded in an adventure program for foster and adopted youth and in a refugee camp for families and children. Current literature reveals underlying factors that contribute to play deprivation for these youth, including conditions resulting from trauma and developmental delays due to the absence of play engagement. The poster reviews the programmatic components necessary for addressing these factors through whole-person play-based programming. It considers using adventure-based programming to introduce and augment play engagement to address this population- level concern.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesfall2024/1010/thumbnail.jp

This presentation is about an educational program developed to help educate the caregivers about kangaroo care while their baby is in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This program is to emphasis in the occupations of social interaction and family involvement with kangaroo care. Caregivers/parents are able to learn about the what kangaroo care is, the different type methods of kangaroo care, the benefits of kangaroo care, the importance of kangaroo care while being in the NICU. This program development for the caregivers is able to help with their journaling experience while in the NICU and adjusting kangaroo care into their daily routine once they are being discharged from the NICU.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesfall2024/1014/thumbnail.jp

Evaluating the Impact of a One Day Resiliency Training Facilitation Program on Nurses\u27 Wellbeing in an Acute Care Hospital

    Get PDF
Practice Problem: Nursing burnout is a significant problem with far-reaching consequences. High levels of stress, emotional exhaustion, and reduced job satisfaction among nurses contribute to poor patient outcomes, increased medical errors, and high turnover rates. There is a high prevalence of burnout among nurse executives, consequences of which include extreme stress, emotional anguish, and a desire to quit, which points to a larger problem with burnout affecting the nursing profession (Martin et al., 2023). Fostering resilience among nurses can help to mitigate these outcomes by enhancing physical, mental, and social health through building purpose, positive emotions, and effective stress management. Resilience can be fostered through training by encouraging and promoting self-compassion, strength-based development, and mindfulness among nurses (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983). PICOT: In nurses working in an acute care hospital (P), does participation in a one-day resiliency training for healthcare professionals facilitation program (I) compared to voluntary web-based self-check-in (C) result in changes in coping responses of participants as measured using the Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS-SF) scale (O) over six weeks (T)? Evidence: Evidence gathered from numerous literature reviews acknowledged positive effects of well-being programs such as those focused on resiliency to enhance nurses’ general well-being. Intervention: This was an evidence-based practice change project. This project involved pre-test and post-test survey analysis. Education on coping mechanisms was provided via segmented lectures. An immediate post-test survey and subsequent survey at 6 weeks were conducted using the Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form (SCS-SF) to evaluate effectiveness of the intervention. Outcome: While post-test results showed no significant statistical change (t(10)=0.09, p=.929), 27% of participants reported that tools learned were beneficial and 73% of the participants reported the program was very beneficial, which points to the clinical significance of the project. Conclusion: By creating and executing a resilience training program for nurses in direct patient care, the project provides crucial knowledge in enhancing holistic health for nurses and significantly improving patient outcomes
