Returning to Occupations after Surviving Cancer
The presentation covers a program development to help assist cancer survivors transition back to meaningful occupations, including work, with decreased stress and anxiety, to increase their quality of life.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1007/thumbnail.jp
Implementation of Reintegration Program before Discharge for Veteran Population
A poster about creating and implementing a Reintegration program for War Veterans so they can possess the skills to be reintegrated into the community after they are discharged from the long-term care facility.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1032/thumbnail.jp
Exploring the Benefits of BlazePod Technology through an Occupational Therapy Lens
BlazePod technology is an intervention used successfully in Physical Therapy (PT) to address motor coordination deficits, however, there is limited evidence that OTs can successfully use it as a preparatory intervention with individuals who have motor coordination and cognitive deficits and are unable to independently complete everyday occupations such as dressing, bathing, toileting, etc.
The focus of this project was to provide evidence that supports how the occupational therapy profession can utilize BlazePod technology as a preparatory intervention tool to address motor coordination and cognitive deficits that in turn will enhance ADLs and IADLs.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1038/thumbnail.jp
The Role of Occupational Therapy with Neurodiversity-Inclusive Workplace Design
The purpose of this capstone project is to raise awareness and understanding of neurodiversity to foster neuroinclusive work environments. By addressing employment challenges faced by the neurodiverse community, occupational therapists can support neurodistinct adults who often lack accessible services to navigate the job cycle, promote opportunities for neurodistinct individuals to succeed in the workforce, and educate employers on neuroinclusive design.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1055/thumbnail.jp
Manualized Occupational Therapy Intervention for Children and Adolescents with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children can cause physiological and psychological reactions that can lead to impaired executive functioning and self-regulation skills that interfere with occupational engagement. Occupational Therapy (OT) utilizes an occupational perspective to treat children with PTSD. However, there is an absence of a manualized OT intervention in the literature that incorporates an occupation-based approach, utilizes graded occupation as the primary intervention, and tracks treatment progress and outcomes. The purpose of this capstone project was to create a manualized OT intervention protocol for OT practitioners to treat children with PTSD guided by the model of human occupation and evidenced-based principles of behavioral activation therapy. The manualized OT intervention was created in two parts. Part one includes five sections of background information for OT practitioners to inform efficient implementation of the protocol. Part two includes 13 treatment sessions that incorporate the essential components of the OT process to treat children with PTSD. The manualized OT treatment protocol will allow OT practitioners to consistently treat children with PTSD and to study the efficacy of the protocol
OT\u27s Role in Community Accessibility at Public Parks and Playgrounds for Parents with Disabilities
Public parks and playgrounds play a crucial role in fostering parent-child interaction, social inclusion, and community engagement. However, these essential recreational spaces often remain inaccessible to individuals with disabilities (Lynch et al., 2020). Research underscores the benefits of inclusive playgrounds, yet many are not designed to accommodate adults with disabilities, thus creating barriers for parents with disabilities who wish to engage with their children (Dalpra, 2022; Jacob et al., 2017). Although occupational therapy (OT) practitioners are instrumental in ensuring environmental accessibility within home settings, their involvement in the design of public spaces is limited. Young et al. (2019) advocate for the inclusion of OT professionals in the interprofessional design teams for outdoor spaces, highlighting their expertise in inclusion, development, advocacy, and education. Furthermore, increased collaboration between park planners and individuals with disabilities could enhance accessibility and usability, thereby improving participation among adults with disabilities (Perry et al., 2021). This poster will showcase an OTD capstone project advancing the Accessible Playgrounds Project by Through the Looking Glass. This initiative aims to create a publicly accessible national database of playgrounds assessed and rated for accessibility features relevant to parents and caregivers with disabilities. The capstone project comprises three main components: 1) the development of an administration manual and how-to videos for the Modified PARCs assessment; 2) advocacy with San Diego Park and Recreation department, highlighting the self-reported accessibility needs of parents with disabilities to support planning for upcoming park development; and 3) educational programming for parents with disabilities on strategies for identifying park accessibility features to support inclusive play.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1058/thumbnail.jp
Occupational Therapy’s Role in the Success and Positive Outcomes of Youth Within the Foster System
This capstone paper will discuss the development of an occupational therapy program to support the needs of youth within the foster system and prepare this population to live independently. Background information including statistics, the need for occupational therapy, and the program specifics such as rationale, significance, and objective are discussed. The development of an occupational therapy program to aid in the success of children within the foster care system helps close a gap in research that will contribute to this population\u27s success and positive outcomes. The purpose of this capstone was to develop a program for children in the foster system, ages 15-18, to gain the life skills needed for independence in occupational participation of ADLs and IADLs. Foster children tend to have many contributing factors that lead to a decreased quality of life (AOTA, 2021). The training and education that occupational therapists can provide will allow these children to develop strategies and skills that will improve overall mental health status, functional life skill development, feelings of success, and an increase in quality of life
Social and Leisure Participation by People with Dementia: A Caregiver Resource Guide
The purpose of this caregiver education intervention is to increase caregiver self-efficacy and effectiveness in increasing social participation and quality of life for those they are caring for as well as decreasing caregiver stress and burnout associated with providing care for those diagnosed with Alzheimer\u27s. The guide will include education and resources for these caregivers detailing safety precautions, strategies to reduce difficult behaviors impacting social and leisure engagement, and resources to decrease caregiver burden.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1029/thumbnail.jp
Experiences of Working Sandwich Generation Caregivers
This poster presents an insightful exploration into the lives of Working Sandwich Generation Caregivers (WSCs), a group defined as individuals aged 30-65 who simultaneously provide care for both aging adults (over 65 years old) and younger dependents (29 years old or younger), while also managing their careers. The study delves deep into the unique challenges and experiences faced by WSCs, aiming to highlight the occupational, emotional, and physical demands inherent in their roles. Through qualitative research methods, including interviews and occupational therapy assessments, the manuscript offers a comprehensive look at the balancing act WSCs perform daily. It seeks to inform effective support strategies and interventions, thereby contributing valuable insights to the field of occupational therapy and caregiving support.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1033/thumbnail.jp
Ergonomics in Esports: A Video Training Series for Esports Athletes
Electronic sports, also known as esports, refers to organized and competitive video gaming against other players or teams. Unlike traditional sports, esports is sedentary, with athletes spending several hours daily seated at their gaming stations. Additionally, esports athletes lack the knowledge of ergonomic hazards and how to mitigate occupational overuse syndromes and mental health challenges. The purpose of this project was to create a video training series from an occupational therapy perspective to educate esports athletes on the ergonomic hazards of esports to improve participation, occupational performance, and quality of life of esports athletes.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1041/thumbnail.jp
