Occupational Therapy’s Role Within the Foster System
This poster will discuss the development of an occupational therapy program to support the needs of youth within the foster system to prepare this population to live independently. Background information including statistics, the need for occupational therapy, and the program specifics such as rationale, significance, and objective are displayed. The development of an occupational therapy program to aid in the success of children within the foster care system helps to close a gap in research that will contribute to the success and positive outcomes of this population. The purpose of this capstone was to develop a program for children in the foster system, ages 15-18, to gain the life skills needed for independence in occupational participation of ADLs and IADLs. Foster children tend to have many contributing factors that lead to a decreased quality of life (AOTA, 2021). The training and education that occupational therapists can provide will allow these children to develop strategies and skills that will lead to an improved overall mental health status, functional life skill development, feelings of success, and an increase in quality of life.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonessummer2024/1010/thumbnail.jp
A Pilot Study on Implementing an Interprofessional Education Model for Developing Rehabilitative Science Student Core Competencies
Introduction: Inclusion of interprofessional education (IPE) in academia is required by education accreditation agencies for occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) in the United States. Limited information is available on models of IPE to guide faculty. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the feasibility of implementing a recently designed IPE model with OT and PT graduate students. This IPE model aligned Interprofessional Education Collaborative core competency domains with novel learning activities, such as an escape room, simulated medical chart, and two simulations.
Methods: Data were retrieved from 52 auto-enrolled students (n=14 OT) and (n=38 PT) in a 15-week course held in 2019. Students completed the Interprofessional Education Collaborative Self-Assessment Tool on the first day (pre) and last day (post) of the course. Inclusion criteria required all archived assignments to be completed thoroughly. Data were analyzed using a non-parametric statistical test with a significant threshold set at p \u3c 0.05.
Results: Results indicated total post-scores were significantly higher compared to pre-scores, z = -5.08, p \u3c .001. Further, sub-group analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test showed significantly higher post-scores compared to pre-scores for interaction component (z=-5.27, p \u3c .001) and values component (z=-2.50, p =.012). Comparison between OT and PT students using the Mann-Whitney U test did not show any significant difference in total scores (U=231.5; p=.853), interaction component (U=221.0; p=.678), and value component (U=238.5; p=.972).
Discussion: This IPE model is feasible for a larger study and, after participating, students will move forward in the curriculum with better IPE foundational knowledge

A Manualized Occupational Therapy Communication Skills Intervention for Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects many individual\u27s participation in daily activities. There is a lack of research in the area of occupational therapy (OT) treatment for veterans with PTSD. However, there has been an expressed need in the literature for a developed intervention for veterans with PTSD that includes communication skills as a component. To date, a manualized communication skills OT intervention for veterans with PTSD has not been created. The purpose of this paper was to develop a resource tool for occupational therapists to utilize as an intervention when treating veterans with PTSD using the framework of the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) as its theoretical foundation.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1007/thumbnail.jp
Learning within the Autism Perspective
The project addresses the needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within school settings, aiming to improve educational outcomes and quality of life. It highlights the role occupational therapists play in fostering collaboration and creating a supportive environment. The program utilizes a variety of activities to positively impact students education and encourage educational participation. Recommendations include further distribution of the activities to different campuses to promote program adoption.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1001/thumbnail.jp
Occupational Impact of Caregivers in Pediatric Palliative Care
The purpose of this study is to understand the occupational impact for caregivers who had a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition who had received pediatric palliative care. A lack of understanding of occupational therapy’s role in end-of-life care ultimately underutilizes and under-prepares occupational therapists to work in this practice area. Becoming a medical family caregiver, neglecting personal needs and desires becomes a norm having a in-direct effect on physical and psychological health and well-being. Findings from this study suggest that it is reasonable to infer that occupational participation among caregivers is influenced by finding time for self and others, professional and personal sacrifices, multileveled support types, finding meaning and purpose, and engaging in the transformation and healing stages.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1023/thumbnail.jp
An OT Program to Support Women with High-risk Pregnancy
This poster is an overview of an occupational therapy program developed at a Women\u27s Health OBGYN Clinic in Texas. The program was designed to address the needs of women with high-risk pregnancy and focused on mental health, physical health, energy conservation, emotional regulation, and social participation. The findings indicate the needs for further research to understand how occupational therapy can support women\u27s health and an expansion of program offerings to increase support for high-risk pregnancy.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1038/thumbnail.jp
Improving Health and Wellness in Patients with Frailty Traits
Frailty is an age-related syndrome characterized by impairments in strength, endurance, mobility, and cognitive function (Panayi et al., 2019). Studies show that frailty increases vulnerability during stressful events such as hospitalization and is linked to poor recovery (Peeler et al., 2022). In addition to poor recovery, frail patients are at risk for increased dependence, reduced occupational performance, and reduced occupational engagement (Kawaguchi et al., 2017). Purpose: This capstone project aimed to improve health and wellness in individuals with frailty traits by implementing a comprehensive program focused on improving strength, functional capacity, nutrition intake, stress management, cognitive health, and social wellness.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1048/thumbnail.jp
Colors of Connection: A Manual for Cultivating Social and Emotional Skills in Children with Disabilities Through Creative Arts
Children with disabilities (CWD) are experiencing occupational deprivation due to limited involvement in extracurricular activities. This deprivation impedes their development of social-emotional skills. In attempt to mitigate this deprivation, the OTD student created and implemented Colors of Connection, a creative arts based, social and emotional learning program into an already existing after school program for CWD.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1054/thumbnail.jp
The Positive Impact of Reducing Polypharmacy on the Quality of Life for Older Adults with Serious Illness
Practice Problem
The rising prevalence of chronic health conditions, the aging of the population, and advances in healthcare technology have contributed to the rampant over-prescribing of medications and the prescribing of potentially inappropriate medicines (PIMS) in community-dwelling older adults. Additionally, reluctance by the medical community to deprescribe and resistance among patients and their caregivers due to misperceptions about withdrawing treatment has further perpetuated the problem.
PICOT
The PICOT question for this project was, in community-dwelling older adults over age 60 receiving palliative care, does the implementation of an interprofessional deprescribing intervention compared to standard care by a home-based medical care program improve quality of life over a 10-week period?
Evidence
The literature clearly demonstrates that polypharmacy and PIMs have been associated with adverse drug events, including drug interactions and side effects, falls, hospitalizations, low quality of life, and increased healthcare costs. The evidence also shows that deprescribing interventions have improved health outcomes among this population.
Intervention
One market was chosen to implement an interprofessional deprescribing intervention involving pharmacists and advanced practice providers. The number of medications taken and quality of life scores were measured pre- and post-intervention. Of the 41 medication reviews completed, there were 78 deprescribing recommendations.
Outcome
Unfortunately, due to numerous barriers and limitations, only two medications were deprescribed throughout the pilot; therefore, the post-intervention quality of life scores could not be measured. The pre-intervention quality of life scores were low compared to the general population.
Conclusion
This DNP project exemplifies the magnitude of the problem of polypharmacy in older adults with palliative care needs and the burden of overcoming the challenges of deprescribing experienced providers. Collective efforts of a multidisciplinary team offer the best chance of successful deprescribing of PIMs and improving outcomes for community-dwelling older adults with serious illness
