Values of Occupational Balance and Harmony Among BIPOC Caregivers
Get PDFBackground. Historically minoritized populations are underrepresented within hospice care. The lack of diversity among hospice care recipients impacts the development of culturally responsive programming within hospice care for BIPOC family caregivers.
Objective. To learn of the values and perspectives of BIPOC family caregivers in hospice care regarding occupational balance and occupational harmony.
Methods. A mixed-methods study that included an online survey and an optional interview. Measurements utilized were the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ-11) and an anonymous survey. Three participants completed the online survey.
Results. Preliminary codes were determined by the student researcher from the online survey responses. Four codes were identified: domains of caregiving, spirituality, spectrum of strategies for self-care, and sense of purpose.
Conclusions. Preliminary analysis suggests that BIPOC caregivers relate to cultural values that align with familism and caregiver burden. Suggestions for future research in occupational therapy should aim to assesses the efficacy of a program to better support resiliency for BIPOC caregivers in hospice.https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1050/thumbnail.jp
Preoperative Warming to Improve Patient Outcomes: Implementation of a Warming Protocol
Get PDFPractice Problem: Inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH) is noted to be the most common surgical complication. IPH is associated with a variety of complications which are known to impact the well-being of the patient, family, and healthcare system.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this scholarly project was scheduled for total hip and knee arthroplasty surgical procedures under general or neuraxial anesthesia greater than 60 minutes (P), how effective is the implementation of an evidence-based pre-surgical warming protocol including forced-air warming (FAW) (I) compared to current practices (C) in improving normothermia readings within 15 minutes of arriving to the PACU, reducing intensity of IPH, and increasing nursing adherence to protocol (O) over 6 weeks (T).
Evidence: The current evidence demonstrates that the implementation of pre-warming patients has been found to consistently reduce the amount of time a patient spent in hypothermia. The research indicated that the use of FAW more effectively maintained normal patient core body temperature and reduced incidents of IPH or length of which patient experienced hypothermia. All the studies showed that despite pre-warming, IPH could not be prevented completely. However, patients that received pre-warming reached normal body temperature in shorter times and experienced decreased magnitude of hypothermia.
Intervention: The implementation involved the creation of a pre-operative warming protocol tailored to patients identified as being high-risk for IPH, incorporating the use of FAW. Staff nurses were trained to utilize this protocol for identifying and administering the most appropriate pre-operative warming interventions.
Outcome: The results from the project indicated a significant clinical improvement in normothermia rates upon arrival to the PACU, with all patients exhibiting body temperatures exceeding 96.8°F upon immediate admission to recovery. Additionally, the findings demonstrated a reduction in the incidence of IPH throughout the perioperative pathway.
Conclusion: The change project was designed with the primary objective of mitigating incidence of IPH through implementing a comprehensive preoperative protocol, specifically using FAW for high-risk patients. The aim was to enhance overall patient outcomes and minimize the occurrence of associated surgical complications. This initiative reflects a proactive approach toward improving perioperative care and ensuring better patient safety and well-being
The Role of Occupational Therapy in Enhancing Adaptive Golf
Get PDFThis project is focused on advocating on behalf of golfers with disabilities by providing an educational resource for golf administrators on enhancing adaptive golf at their facility. The project\u27s deliverable was an in-service presentation highlighting the importance of adaptive golf and its positive impact on community, state, and national individuals. The in-service was delivered through the Southern California Professional Golf Association SCPGA Catalyst webinar series. The topics included grants for adaptive equipment, the financial impact of adaptive golf on the industry, community partnerships, and golf course design modifications utilizing the most cost-effective approaches. Education and Advocacy for Universal design and Accessibility in Housing
Get PDFIn the United States, there is a lack of adequate numbers of universally designed and accessible houses in the housing market for the older population and people with disabilities. Many barriers, such as financial support and lack of knowledge for housing-related professionals, can prevent this population from participating in home occupations. The project developed educational products, including the universal design housing experience booklet, universal design housing checklist, and universal design blueprints. These products were delivered through the blog post on Uncurbed LinkedIn website. The needs assessment was conducted to provide the guidelines for the chapters in the booklet and checklist. The educational products would educate people with disabilities and older populations about financial resources, home environmental barriers, and universal design in housing. The educational products also advocated for universal design in housing and educated housing-related professionals, including architects, interior designers, builders, and realtors, to increase their understanding and knowledge of universal design, universal design features, and the roles of occupational therapists in this field. Therefore, education and advocacy for universal design and accessibility in housing are important to increase universal design housing options.

Medically Complex Child: Best Practice Toolkit for Improving Coordination of Care Between Parents, Providers, and Support Systems
Get PDFChildren with special health care needs face multiple challenges within the educational realm due to missing school days from illness. The purpose of this paper was to explore an electronic toolkit that would allow for improved communication and care coordination between teachers, principals, social workers, school nurses, parents, and healthcare professionals to maximize in classroom learning opportunities. The project was guided by the following PICOT question, for interprofessional staff supporting the medically complex child (P), how does the development of a best practice for coordination of care toolkit (I) compared to no structured program strategy (C) influence the efficacy of interprofessional staff coordination of care between parents, providers, and support systems? Communication and lack of coordination of care between health care providers and school personnel is deficient as evidenced within the literature. Utilization of action plans for chronic health conditions, primarily for asthma and food allergies, have been shown to decrease school absenteeism. Incorporation of existing action plans for chronic health conditions, that are individually modifiable, into an electronic coordination of care toolkit, allowed for improved communication, stronger bonds and relationships developed with the aim of maximizing the full classroom experience for the student, defining best practice
The Perceptions of Different Disciplines on Early Childhood Interprofessional Teams Involving Occupational Therapy Services
Get PDFThis phenomenological study was conducted to explore how professionals identify the roles of occupational therapy practitioners and other pediatric professionals on early childhood interprofessional teams. The use of surveys and interviews revealed three themes: 1) the role of occupational therapy encompasses more than what is perceived to be their role, 2) collaboration must be initiated, as it can be influenced by the setting, and 3) different professionals have the shared goal of promoting child health outcomes, but conflict can arise during collaboration. It was recognized that early childhood professionals would like to collaborate more with each member on the interprofessional team, but external influences and different settings for providing early childhood services may impact the ability to collaborate. This study discusses implications for occupational therapy professionals working in early childhood and the possibilities for future research

Disaster Planning for People with Spinal Cord Injury: An Educational Video Series
Get PDFA spinal cord injury is classified as an impairment of the nerves that compose the spinal cord. A spinal cord injury can affect the motor and sensory pathways below the level of the injury. As a result, people with spinal cord injury experience physical, emotional, and environmental barriers. Furthermore, they experience an increase in health-related issues such as autonomic dysreflexia, changes in the bowel and bladder system, pressure wounds, and difficulty regulating body temperature. However, these comorbidities are often exacerbated during a natural disaster. Additionally, the physical and environmental barriers continue to influence this population in times of disaster. The overall difficulty of navigating a natural disaster puts people at risk for occupational disruption but can be more likely for this population due to the barriers that influence their daily life pre/post natural disaster. People with disabilities are 2 to 4 times more likely to sustain a secondary injury or a fatality. Literature shows that disaster preparation can positively influence response and recovery to a natural disaster. Existing resources on natural disaster preparation fail to include specific considerations of the spinal cord community\u27s needs. To address this problem, an educational video series was created.
