    Impact of Wars and Disasters on Tuberculosis Epidemiology

    Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major public health problems globally. Key risk factors for TB include poverty, living conditions such as overcrowding, and the presence and prevalence of significant biological and behavioral risk factors that impair the immune system or contribute to additional biological risk factors. Wars and disasters increase the risk of developing TB mainly due to population movement and displacement into overcrowded camps and temporary shelters, destruction of infrastructure, breakdown of health services, or discontinuation of ongoing treatment for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection. This leads to a higher risk of TB transmission, reactivation of latent TB infection, worsening of active disease, and increased vulnerabilities. Any factor that increases risk factors for TB is a primary driver of changes in TB epidemiology during wars and disasters. A TB preparedness plan should include a coordination mechanism, pre-assessment of data such as TB prevalence and incidence, drug-resistance status, prevailing major biological and behavioral risk factors for TB, resource requirements, a contingency plan for procurement and supply chain, surveillance, monitoring and evaluation tools, health facility details, effective TB infection control measures, and testing and screening protocols. Strategies to ensure the continuity of the National TB Control Program and to decrease vulnerabilities and risk factors for TB should be developed. Since most wars and disasters cause refugees to cross borders and affect multiple countries, developing an international data-sharing system would be useful

    Gender, Radicalization, and Patriarchy in Turkey: an Analysis of Women’s Motivations and Constraints When Confronted With Isis and the Al-Nusra Front

    This article locates Turkey in discussions of gender and violent extremism (VE), probes women’s diverse roles, motivations, and constraints for and against religious radicalization, and discusses the impact of sustainable patriarchy on their agency. Building on the findings of an extensive field study on women’s recruitment to ISIS and al-Nusra from Turkey, the article disproves women’s widely assumed passivity, demonstrates other roles as sympathizers, recruiters, and perpetrators, and explores potential push, pull, and enabling factors. It also reveals the hindering effects of patriarchy on women’s preventive roles and accentuates the empowerment of both women and women’s NGOs for an effective and gender-sensitive fight against VE. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor ; Francis Group.European Union and Republic of Turkey, (ICSP /2017/386-591

    İç Mimarlık Eğitiminde Deneyim Odaklı Malzeme Öğrenimi Üzerine

    İç mimarın malzeme bilgisi, tasarlanan mekânın işlevselliğini, estetiğini, sürdürülebilirliğini ve genel başarısını doğrudan etkilemektedir. İç mekân tasarımında atmosfer ve konfor sağlayan doğru malzemeyi seçmek, doğru uygulama bilgisini ve malzemenin her açıdan tanınmasını gerektirir. İç mimaride malzeme bilgisinin edinilmesi deneyime dayalı bir metodolojiye yönelmektedir. Böylece deneyime ve duyuya dayalı, gerekli donanım ve mekânları içeren çok yönlü öğrenme yöntemleri geliştirilir. Bu çalışma, iç mimaride malzeme öğrenimine uygulanan deneyim odaklı yöntemlere odaklanmaktadır. Amaç, iç mimaride malzeme derslerinin uygulama açısından etkinliğinin artırılması gerekliliğini vurgulayarak, mevcut yöntemleri iki örnekle inceleyerek öneriler geliştirmektir. Araştırmada incelenen iki bölümdeki materyal dersler, ders içerikleri ve bunların diğer ders ve stüdyolarla ilişkileri incelenmiştir. Materyal derslerinin öğretim yöntemlerinden yola çıkarak Türkiye'de uygulanabilecek yöntemler konusunda öneriler geliştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın literatürdeki diğer çalışmalardan farkı, materyal derslerin neden uygulamalara, mekânlara ve yöntemlere ihtiyaç duyduğunu açıklığa kavuşturmaktır.     Search for Flavour-Changing Neutral-Current Couplings Between the Top Quark and the Higgs Boson in Multi-Lepton Final States in 13 Tev i>pp/I> Collisions With the Atlas Detector

The analysis considers leptonic decays of the top quark along with Higgs boson decays into two W bosons, two Z bosons or a tau(+)tau(-) pair. It focuses on final states containing either two leptons (electrons or muons) of the same charge or three leptons. The considered processes are t (t) over bar and Ht production. For the t (t) over bar production, one top quark decays via t -> Hq. The proton-proton collision data set analysed amounts to (140 fb(-1)) at (root s = 13 TeV). No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed and upper limits are set on the t -> Hq branching ratios at 95% confidence level, amounting to observed (expected) limits of B(t -> Hu) 2.8 (3.0) x 10(-4) and B(t -> Hc) 3.3 (3.8) x 10(-4). Combining this search with other searches for t Hq flavour-changing neutral-current interactions previously conducted by ATLAS, considering H -> b (b) over bar and H -> gamma gamma decays, as well as H -> tau(+)tau(-) decays with one or two hadronically decaying tau-leptons, yields observed (expected) upper limits on the branching ratios of B(t -> Hu) 2.6 (1.8) x 10(-4) and B(t -> Hc) 3.4 (2.3) x 10(-4).We thank CERN for the very successful operation of the LHC and its injectors, as well as the support staff at CERN and at our institutions worldwide without whom ATLAS could not be operated efficiently.     Investigation of Ff-Mas Oxysterole’s Role in Follicular Development and Its Relation To Hedgehog Signal Pathway

    The Hedgehog signaling pathway plays a crucial role in folliculogenesis; however, the association between FF-MAS oxysterol activity in folliculogenesis and the Hedgehog signaling pathway has not been revealed. The evaluation of FF-MAS activity in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with folliculogenesis disorder might provide a new approach to tackle follicular and oocyte maturation failure. The question is: does FF-MAS oxysterol affect granulosa cell (GC) proliferation? If so, is this effect facilitated through the Hedgehog pathway? To answer these questions, GCs were isolated from follicle fluids obtained from patients undergoing oocyte retrieval during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. After the isolated GCs were incubated in different cell culture media, the levels of Hedgehog pathway components (SMO, Gli1) were measured by using immunohistochemical methods, cytoELISA, and qRT-PCR. Meanwhile, cell proliferation rates were determined. Significant increases (p 0.001) in SMO and Gli1 expressions and cell proliferation were observed in the FF-MAS-treated subgroups of both PCOS and male factor participants compared to the FF-MAS deficient subgroup. Remarkably, FF-MAS positively affected the pathway components despite the pathway inhibitor cyclopamine. Although the increase in Hedgehog pathway components was slightly higher in the male factor group (MF), it was not statistically significant. In our study, we demonstrated for the first time the molecular effect of FF-MAS on human GCs in folliculogenesis. Since FF-MAS is already used in assisted reproductive techniques in animals and is known to be synthesized in the human body, it could be considered a new approach in human IVF treatments. © The Author(s) 2024.Hacettepe University Research Foundation, (TSA-2018-17320

    Energy Consumption Comparison of Two Cooling Systems Equipped With the Heat Exchangers in Different Agricultural Postharvest Storage Conditions

    In a hot, humid, and fluctuating climate due to global climate change, agricultural postharvest relies prominently on refrigerating systems. To enhance thermal performance, such as in refrigerating systems, heat exchangers can be used. This work focused on expressing the air temperature, air relative humidity, and energy consumption (EC) profiles of two refrigerating storages using the HFC-32 fixed- and variable-speed compressor (FSC and VSC) systems in four experimental investigations. The profiles were recorded before and after the double-pipe heat exchanger (DPHEx) installations. Both storages had heaters, humidifiers, and hot water pots to generate heat and humidity at 18 °C and 22 °C, a storage temperature range for many postharvest products. From the results, both systems performances in reducing the EC of the FSC and VSC systems were enhanced by using the DPHExs. The EC of the FSC and VSC systems were reduced by 52.33 % and 17.19 % at 18 °C and 50.63 % and 20.00 % at 22 °C, respectively. All experiments with storage using the FSC system resulted in fluctuating profiles. This research information provides basic information for preliminary decisions about using DPHExs in postharvest refrigerating systems and selecting systems targeting the FSC and VSC systems in different situations. The power demand and operating cost relating to agricultural product storage can be calculated by using the EC correlation of each cooling system. Product freshness and abundance depend on fluctuating conditions, postharvest storage conditions, temperature, and relative humidity.
