Single Nucleotide Variants Around the Connective Tissue Growth Factor (ctgf/Ccn2) Gene and Their Association With Multiple Sclerosis Risk, Disability Scores, and Rate of Disease Progression
Background This study aimed to explore the possible association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the upstream (rs9402373) and downstream regions (rs9399005 and rs12526196) of the gene encoding connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) risk and clinical parameters including disability scores and rate of disability progression. Materials and methods In total, 200 patients with RRMS and 305 controls were genotyped using real-time PCR (rs1252696 C/T and rs9402373 G/C) or PCR-RFLP (rs9399005 C/T) methods. Furthermore, the association between these genotypes and clinical parameters including Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score, Multiple Sclerosis Severity Score (MSSS), age at onset, duration of disease, duration of treatment, and presence of contrast-enhancing lesions was analyzed. Results rs9399005 genotypes TT and CT in the dominant model were significant predictors of RRMS vs. control status by logistic regression analysis (OR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.01-2.08, P = .04). Moreover, these genotypes for rs9399005 were associated with a MSSS >= 2.4 (OR = 3.54, 95% CI = 1.56-8.05, P = .003). In addition, MSSS was lower in patients who had at least one rs12526196C allele than in the corresponding patients with the TT genotype (P = .02). Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of the involvement of variants around the CTGF gene in MS risk and disability progression
A Comparison of the Relationship Between Individual Values and Aggressive Driving in Five Countries
Values are supposed to transcend specific situations and contexts. A country-independent relationship is expected between individual values and aggressive driving. The purpose of this novel study was to investigate the relationship between individual values and aggressive driving. The data were collected from five countries, namely, Estonia, Greece, Kosovo, Russia, and Turkey. The number of participants was 124 in Estonian, 272 in Greek, 107 in Kosovar, 132 in Russian, and 87 in Turkish samples. Participants filled out a demographic information form, Driver Anger Indicators Scale, and Short-Schwartz's Value Survey. Results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that values are related to aggressive driving (i.e., aggressive warnings, hostile aggression and revenge) of self and not to perceived aggressive behaviours of others. Value types were not related to aggressive driving, whereas higher-order values were. Conservation was negatively associated with aggressive warnings of self in the Greek sample, and self-transcendence was negatively associated with hostile aggression and revenge of self in Turkish as well as Greek samples. Social focus was negatively and personal focus was positively associated with both types of aggressive driving in the Greek sample. Social focus was also negatively associated with hostile aggression and revenge in the Russian sample. Growth anxiety-free was negatively associated with hostile aggression and revenge of self in Russian and Turkish samples. The relationships between values and aggressive driving (of self) were not country-independent for the five countries, even though the lack of significant relationships between values and aggressive driving (of others) were country-independent.This study is funded by European Commission.European CommissionEuropean CommissionEuropean Commission Joint Research Centr
Theranostic Potential of Graphene Quantum Dots for Multiple Sclerosis
Nanomedicine offers great promise to solve healthcare problems using nanotechnology. Theranostics provide imaging/diagnosis and therapy simultaneously. Novel agents that target both the neuroinflammation and neu-rodegeneration component of multiple sclerosis (MS) are required. Progress has been achieved in developing smart, surface decorated nanoparticles that effectively transport the therapeutic drug into the central nervous system (CNS). Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) can be traced in vivo by fluorescence imaging due to their unique optical properties. They can also traverse the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and deliver drugs into the CNS. More-over, GQDs have low cytotoxicity and higher biocompatibility. Therefore, GQDs can be utilized to design novel multifunctional nanocarrier theranostic tools for MS
Relationship Between Early Respiratory Support and Neurodevelopment in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants
Objective: This study investigated relationship between early respiratory support and neurodevelopmental outcomes in extremely low birth weight infants. Methods: Our study included infants born before 32 weeks’ gestation at a birth weight of 750-1000 g that were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and underwent a neurodevelopmental evaluation at the corrected age of 24 months. Two hundred-twelve infants were divided into 3 groups by determining the predominant type of respiratory support required in the first 3 days of life. Infants who received supplemental oxygen therapy group 1, those who received nasal continuous positive airway pressure and/or nasal intermittent mandatory ventilation were in group 2, and intubated infants were included in group 3. Differences between the groups and relationships between neurodevelopment scores [mental development index (MDI); psychomotor development index (PDI)] were examined. Results: The patients mean birth weight was 887±73 g and mean gestational age was 27±1.9 weeks. MDI and PDI values were below 70 in the intubated patient group (68 and 66, respectively). Patients who received noninvasive ventilation or supplemental oxygen therapy for the first 3 days of life had significantly higher MDI and PDI values. In terms of morbidities of prematurity, intubated infants had higher rates of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, and retinopathy of prematurity. Conclusion: Restrictive invasive ventilation policies can be applied to preterm infants and may improve neurodevelopmental outcomes. The results of this study suggest that every additional day of invasive mechanical ventilation should be avoided if possible
A Big Data Application in Manufacturing Industry-Computer Vision To Detect Defects on Bearings
Ankura;et al.;Hitachi;KPMG Consulting Co., Ltd.;NTT Data Intellilink Corporation;Think in Data Initiative, Association Inc2022 IEEE International Conference on Big Data, Big Data 2022 -- 17 December 2022 through 20 December 2022 -- 186390In the contemporary rotating machinery, bearings are critical and indispensable parts. Early detection of rolling bearing defects carries crucial importance, because undetected defects on the rolling bearings may end in loss of time, resources, money and even lives. In parallel to the accelerated utilization of deep learning applications in the manufacturing industry, different studies have been conducted to determine and evaluate defects on the surfaces of rolling bearings. In this study, a new system, that contains a hardware platform and software components in order to detect surface defects of the metal rolling bearings has been developed. To detect defects, optic image data of the bearings were used, and then computer vision and artificial intelligence techniques were applied to them. In the system, TC-VISION, the source of big data is the platform designed and developed using the optical camera. The results of the applied CNN algorithms performed better than the targeted values with respect to several metrics. The F1 score obtained is close to 100%. The developed system is aimed to be enhanced further in order to develop a fully automated inspection and quality control system for metal rolling bearing systems appropriate for serial production in real industrial environments. © 2022 IEEE.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAK: 3201195ACKNOWLEDGMENT This study was conducted by TEKNOPAR and supported by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) TC-VISION project, with project number 3201195
Evaluation of Umbilical Cord Immune Cells in Pregnancies With Autoimmune Disorders And/Or Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase Polymorphisms
Objectives To evaluate umbilical cord immune cells in pregnancies with autoimmune disorders (AID) and/or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms. Methods Umbilical cords were obtained from seven AID women without MTHFR polymorphisms, eight with AID and MTHFR polymorphisms, nine with MTHFR polymorphisms, and eight with neither. Umbilical cords were assessed immunohistologcally by anti-CD4, anti-CD8, anti-CD14, anti-CD19, anti-CD21, and anti-CD56 antibodies in six umbilical cord zones: 1) arterial wall 2) periarterial zone 3) venous wall 4) perivenous zone 5) intervascular zone, and 6) subamniotic zone. Results AIDs and MTHFR polymorphisms had an effect on the number and composition of CD4+ cells in the venous wall. The presence of a MTHFR polymorphism may affect the number and morphology of CD4+ cells in the subamniotic zone. CD8+ cell distribution is substantially influenced by the presence of maternal risk factors. The co-existence of AID with MTHFR polymorphism has a prominent effect on the number and morphology of CD14+ cells, especially in the arterial wall. CD19+ cells were only observed in the control group in the venous wall, perivenous zone, and intervascular zone. CD21+ cells were only observed in the arterial wall of the control group and the intervascular zone of the AID group with different morphologic features. The number and morphology of CD56+ cells is prominently affected by the presence of maternal risk factors. Conclusions Umbilical cord stem cell and immune cell composition may be affected by the presence of risk factors like MTHFR polymorphisms and/or AID.Hacettepe University's scientific research fund [08 D07 101 014]This study was supported by Hacettepe University's scientific research fund (08 D07 101 014)

Position and Velocity Detection With Radar and Gps Fusion
30th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference, SIU 2022 -- 15 May 2022 through 18 May 2022 -- -- 182415In this paper, the fusion of distance and velocity measurements using radar and GPS is discussed. A Kalman Filter (KF) was designed for the fusion of the measurement results obtained with these different systems. The designed model was used to estimate the position and velocity of a runner. Different scenarios were produced and tested, such as error-free measurements for the entire time interval, unexpected measurements from radar or GPS satellites for a certain period of time. Root Mean Square Error values were calculated and the success of position and velocity estimations were examined. It has been observed that the designed Kalman Filter predictions are more successful than radar and GPS systems. © 2022 IEEE
