Article; Early AccessPhenomenon: As the first stage of a large-scale educational design research (EDR) study focused on the complex problem of providing authentic experiential “hands-on, minds-in” learning opportunities online during a pandemic or other exigency, we conducted a literature review and we interviewed Turkish academic staff and students about their experiences during the first year of the COVID-19 Pandemic. ApproachWe interviewed faculty members, faculty members of medical education departments, and medical students from both public and private medical schools in Türkiye between October 1 and December 31, 2020. Working in pairs, we analyzed the transcripts of 49 interviews using open qualitative coding methods with satisfactory levels of coefficients of agreement. FindingsWe defined six major themes from the qualitative analysis: 1) Fear and concern were the most common reactions when first encountering the pandemic; 2) Teaching methods during the pandemic were primarily unidirectional from faculty to students. This largely one way transmission of information occurred both synchronously and asynchronously; 3) Technological support during the pandemic shutdowns was found to be challenging for both faculties and students; 4) Evaluation of learning during the pandemic was opportunistic and had questionable rigor; 5) Healthy communication was valued by both faculty and students using an array of different tools including social media; and 6) The pandemic had both negative and positive impacts on the educational processes experienced by students and provided by faculty and resulted in recommendations for new approaches to teaching and learning in the future. Medical students were primarily concerned about the susceptibility to COVID-19 of themselves and others, and how the pandemic would affect their progress toward completing their studies. Faculty were primarily concerned about the capacity of online learning to provide clinical learning opportunities and the difficulties of assessing student clinical skills using online modalities. Medical education specialists were primarily concerned about the quality of educational opportunities offered online. InsightsOur findings were similar to other studies conducted in the USA, China, United Kingdom, and other countries. However, the interviews revealed interest among faculty and medical education specialists for further investigation of experiential or active learning models that could be applied in medical education regardless of whether the delivery mode is face-to-face, online, or most likely, blended. In the next stage of our larger scale EDR study, we will design and construct prototype learning environments that incorporate experiential, active, and authentic learning design principles. © 2023 The Author(s). No full text
2023 Medical Technologies Congress, TIPTEKNO 2023 -- 10 November 2023 through 12 November 2023 -- 195703Panic Disorder (PD) is a debilitating condition marked by sudden, intense fear episodes with physical symptoms. Swift and accurate PD detection is crucial for effective intervention. This study aimed to propose an optimal combination of spectral features of the Alpha band to detect PD. For this purpose, 21 PD-diagnosed individuals and 26 healthy controls attended a 5-minute eyes-closed resting state Electroencephalography (EEG) recording session. Welch method was applied to calculate the power spectral density of EEG signals and then the sum, average, maximum, relative power of alpha band, and individual alpha frequency (IAF) were extracted. Relief and nearest component analysis (NCA) methods were performed to select highly relevant features. The maximum average accuracy was reached when commonly selected features between two selection methods were used as inputs of classifiers. Adaboost classifier reached the highest average accuracy with $89.03 ±6.73% rate. © 2023 IEEE

The first part will focus on the formation, development, and sources of international maritime law, as well as the impact of these sources in national legal orders. Subsequently, an investigation will be conducted into how the coastal states of the Eastern Mediterranean give effect to international law within their national legal systems. In the second part, the basic concepts of the law of the sea and the principles for delimiting the maritime boundaries will be explained in light of the historical cases of maritime delimitation. In the third part, the maritime jurisdiction delimitation disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean and their effects on problems such as the sharing of energy resources, environmental protection, and search and rescue activities will be evaluated. Finally, the obstacles to the effective implementation of international maritime law rules in national laws and proposals to overcome these obstacles will be discussed through the Black Sea example

The Eu - Balkans Enlargement Process Deadlock: The Role of Perceptions, Stabilitocracy, and Recommendations

    No full text
The EU enlargement process has its dynamics throughout the years that still keep some of Balkan countries outside of its borders. Starting point for this analysis is perception matters. Hence, it aims to better understand the critical events from the history of interactions between EU and western part of Balkans that shaped the mutual perception that keep Balkan countries located in western part of the region away from the EU. The article will analyze both sides, the EU, and the countries of western part of Balkans. First, it argues that the policy of the EU enlargement with western Balkan has deep roots in history. Hence, we will identify manifests that shaped EU’s perceptions towards that region of Balkans. It will identify building blocks for enlargement resistance. Second, will scrutinize the unwillingness of the Balkan political elites to comply with accession criteria. Further, it will examine the internal regional manifests that contribute to the EU’s perception and undermine development and prosperity. Many regional politicians have mastered to talk the EU talk without delivering any genuine results. It will identify building blocks of stabilitocracy. At the end, it will give recommendations that are implied from the stalled process. Since EU membership is first responsibility than a privilege, priority should be given to what western Balkan countries can do for themselves. Only after they can attract the EU interests to open enlargement again

An Example To Interdisciplinary Applications of Fuzzy Logic in Plant Communities

    No full text
In this work, it is focused on the applicability of classifying and determining plant communities by using fuzzy logic in plant sociology. The advantages of fuzzy logic approach rather than classical methods are also given. Here it is introduced a logical and mathematical description method that can be used in phytosociological analyses. It is proposed that the vagueness of vegetation units can be clarified with Fuzzy Set Theory (FST). Here, plant community type (ct) is expressed as a linguistic variable. A set of its linguistic values (Sct) contains names of syntaxa (as primary terms) and some compound terms. Identifying a plant community is based on its floristic composition and assigning the most appropriate terms in SctS_{ct} to this plant community. It is presented the differences between taxa and syntaxa. And also the mathematical application of the variable ct in expert systems is discussed. Because FSTis based on multi-valued logic, FST is better suited as a conceptual basis for vegetation science than two-valued logic (Aristotele's logic). This new method flips the disadvantages of classical Braun-Blanquet's method into advantages. It is much easier to separate plant communities by combining similar releves with a fuzzy logic approach that provides more detailed information. Moreover, by applying fuzzy logic, it is possible to reveal the ecological structures of species, releves, and plant communities. It becomes possible to analyse plant sociology data and reveal a relationship with ecological conditions applying computer programs developed by fuzzy logic. In a vegetation table prepared via Braun-Blanquet's method, it is likely encountered a whole set of data that contains very poor, vicious, relative, limited, and insufficient explanations. In contrast, in the current work, vegetation table created by getting help from the fuzzy logic approach includes a detailed synthesis table containing the whole data set. In this approach, plant communities can be more rapidly separated and analysed. In the findings of vegetation studies, by mathematical expressions could provide needed clarity. With this study, the applicability of the fuzzy logic approach on plant sociology has been clearly demonstrated. Here it is proposed a novel plant sociology method that makes the results more understandable, objective, and useful

Vector-Valued Shepard Processes: Approximation With Summability

    No full text
In this work, vector-valued continuous functions are approximated uniformly on the unit hypercube by Shepard operators. If lambda denotes the usual parameter of the Shepard operators and m is the dimension of the hypercube, then our results show that it is possible to obtain a uniform approximation of a continuous vector-valued function by these operators when lambda >= m+1. By using three-dimensional parametric plots, we illustrate this uniform approximation for some vector-valued functions. Finally, the influence in approximation by regular summability processes is studied, and their motivation is shown

Le Fanu’s “carmilla”: the Magical Female Body Beyond the Colonial English Rationalism

    No full text
Le Fanu’s “Carmilla” (1872) is a multi-layered novella that can be read from different perspectives because it touches upon political and social issues under the cover of horror fiction. While the political allegory of the story highlights the English oppression of Ireland, its social aspect deals with the “woman problem” of the Victorian age. These two topics are closely related to each other since the ideology of colonisation is also based on the woman (colonised) / man (coloniser) dichotomy. This study focuses on the gender representation of the Carmilla character and her lesbianism that threatens the political and moral order set by the white Anglo-Saxon man. According to Protestant male authorities, her vampiric power must be destroyed for the maintenance of order in society. If Carmilla, of Austrian origin, is taken as the representative of Catholicism and Ireland, the threat hidden within her supernatural beauty and existence becomes more meaningful. In this respect, Le Fanu’s choice of a female vampire is multi-functional because she not only represents “immorality” in the eye of the Victorian reader with her overt lesbian desires, but also helps the author deal with the colonial history of Ireland over the image of a woman’s body. In this article, Carmilla’s fall from grace (her transformation from an angel into a monster in the eye of men) is tracked down and how she comes to represent all the “evil” that runs counter to the principles of the white Anglo-Saxon man who stands for reason and power in colonial narratives is revealed.

Although it is known that vaccination is very crucial for controlling the spread of COVID-19, intentions of individuals to be vaccinated may vary considerably. Therefore, in this study, the aim was to examine the factors related with individuals’ intentions of COVID-19 vaccine. To assess the individuals’ intentions of COVID-19 vaccine, 525 individuals between 18-64 ages who had not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine participated in this study. The study was conducted using an online questionnaire method, consisting of measures of sociodemographic characteristics, variables related to exposure to COVID-19, risk group status for COVID-19, perceived knowledge on vaccines, health anxiety, and self-efficacy levels. Data were analyzed through hierarchical regression analy-sis. Sociodemographic variables, being in the risk group for COVID-19, and individuals' own or a close one’s previous diagnosis of COVID-19 were not associated with their intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19. On the other hand, results showed that individuals' intentions of COVID-19 vaccine were significantly related with increased perceived knowledge about COVID-19 vaccines, having experienced financial loss in the COVID-19 outbreak, and having high levels of health anxiety. Findings of the study may help to design vaccination campaigns in the society. © 2023 Association of Clinical Psychology Research. All rights reserved

Optimization Models and Heuristic Solution Methods for the Integrated Fleet Sizing and Replenishment Planning Problem With Candidate Delivery Patterns

    No full text
In this thesis work, two mathematical models were developed to formulate two basic and extended versions the integrated fleet sizing and replenishment planning problem, and various solution methods were proposed. In the first section of the thesis, a model was created for replenishment planning and fleet size determination under pre-defined replenishment frequencies and vendor management policy. For solving the mentioned model, two different metaheuristic solution techniques, namely Approximate Dynamic Programming, and Problem Space Search, were proposed and tested on datasets inspired by real-life data. In the second section, a more generalized version of the model in the first section is considered, and a mathematical model is developed from a new perspective, with intuitive solution methods proposed. Replenishment patterns were considered instead of pre-defined recurring replenishment frequencies. Additionally, demand seasonality and vehicle renting options were taken into account. To solve the problem, three different versions of the Fix and Optimize heuristic were designed and tested on generated data. The quality of the results and solution times demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed solution techniques.
