Grey Matter Analysis in Non-Severe Covid-19 Points Out Limbic-Related Cortex and Substantia Nigra
Background ; Objective: It is unknown whether occult neurological damage exists in mild COVID-19 patients. Obtaining direct histopathological evidence is difficult and often inappropriate. Radiological tools provide important clues regarding this issue. We aimed to investigate any overt or subtle changes in brain magnetic resonance (MR) scans of patients who recovered from non-severe COVID-19 at subacute stage. Methods: Cortical thicknesses/areas were measured in the olfactory bulb (OB), gyri recti, amygdalae, hippocampi, entorhinal cortices, perirhinal cortices, insulae, and substantia nigrae (SN) and compared with controls. Gross findings have also been reported. We assessed the correlations between radiological and clinical parameters. Results: Twenty percent of the patients had abnormal MR scans (mild ventriculomegaly, a hyperintense lesion, a lacune and hydrocephalus) although their relevance to COVID-19 was unknown. We found increased cortical thickness in bilateral OB, left entorhinal cortex, right perirhinal cortex, bilateral insulae, and bilateral gyri recti (p0.05 for all). Right OB was thinner in patients with anosmia (p=0.015) and ageusia (p=0.004). Left perirhinal cortex and left gyrus rectus were thicker in patients with vertigo (p=0.040; p=0.032 respectively). Sleep disturbance was associated to increased thickness in left perirhinal cortex (p=0.033). Patients with brain fog had smaller SN bilaterally (right p=0.028 and left p=0.011). Patients with anxiety symptoms after COVID-19 had increased right hippocampal area(p=0.023). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was correlated to the thickness of right perirhinal cortex (r=-0.57, p=0.02) while CRP, time since COVID-19 and age were not. Conclusion: These changes in limbic areas, insula and SN necessitate close monitoring of patients for autonomic complications, and secondary neurodegenerative processes
Outcomes of Limb Lengthening With Computer-Assisted Hexapod External Fixators in the Treatment of Fibular Hemimelia
Background:Fibular hemimelia (FH) represents the most common deficiency of the long bones and is associated with multiple deformities. Reconstructive treatment with external fixators in FH restores normal lower extremity alignment and length with plantigrade feet for a balanced and effective gait. The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of lower limb lengthening and simultaneous tri-plane deformity correction with a computer-assisted hexagonal external fixator in children with FH. Methods:A retrospective review was performed for FH cases treated with a computer-assisted hexagonal external fixator in a tertiary referral center. Leg length discrepancy (LLD), interphyseal angles, tibiocalcaneal distances, healing index (HI), and callus shapes were analyzed for radiologic evaluation, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) was used for functional assessment. Limbs with HI 50 days/cm, PedsQL >75, and without regenerate fractures were considered successful lengthenings. Results:Twenty-four limbs of 23 patients were included. The limbs were lengthened for a mean of 7.24 cm (range, 4.7 to 15.6). The initial LLD of 5.6 cm (range, 0.5 to 19 cm) increased to 1.7 cm (range, 0.1 to 6 cm), and the mean interphyseal angle was 12.7 degree (range, 1.5 to 54.2 degree), tibiocalcaneal distance was 0.85 cm (range, 0.1 to 1.7) at final follow-up. The most common regenerated bone morphology was cylindrical, as seen in 11 limbs (45.8%). The average PedsQL score was 83.5 (range, 69.5 to 96.7). Sixteen limbs (66.7%) had successful lengthening at their first, and 4 limbs (80%) had successful lengthening at their second surgeries. Seven limbs had complications requiring surgical intervention (29.1%), with 3 (12.5%) regenerate fractures after external fixators removal. Conclusions:Limb reconstruction with computer-assisted hexapod fixators is a successful and reliable option for the treatment of LLD in FH, and patients demonstrate good functional outcomes. Surgeons should be aware of potential complications and should utilize prophylactic measures when necessary
Narrative act in an architectural design studio: Studio alti | üstü
This thesis investigates the creative potential of narrative acts as a design tool and an object through architectural design studios and opens it to reconsideration and discussion in the context of Studio Alti | Üstü, Department of Architecture, TOBB University of Economics and Technology (ETU). Studio Alti | Üstü is a rethinking environment about today's architectural design education with the visual and textual design tools of the past and present; it is a process-oriented alternative studio that looks at architecture through narratives, established to produce speculations about the future, to expose flaws, mistakes, trial and error methods while revealing the invisible qualities. While developing the design process around a story/fiction with narrative, the studio pushes the boundaries of architectural design and establishes creative and triggering relationships between imagination-image and thinking-making. As a way of generating design ideas, narrative acts also constitute a modality of thinking to reproduce them. Narrative is a fragmented structure; each fragment participates in the construction of design thinking through the production and reproduction of events and relationships. The structural, ideational and discursive nature of narrative is fundamental to the production, interpretation and perception of the thought of architectural design. In the context of Studio Alti | Üstü, all the design fragments, narratives, developed in this process constitute a visual and textual representation of architectural thought through different media such as 3D modelling, animation, collage, comics or a series of orthographic architectural drawings within a story/fiction. Studio Alti | Üstü uses narrative drawing as a dialogue between story and line to embody the unreal/unconstructed/fictional through narrative acts and media. Narrative drawing is an architectural story created through a media, an alternative medium of imagining, describing and realizing indistinct places full of hidden possibilities. This thesis presents a theoretical and practical exploration of narrative acts as a learning and teaching approach in the architectural design studio. It aims to speculate on the future of architectural education with today's design tools and to evaluate the potential of narrative.
Objective: Objective: While TORCH infections caused by Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), Rubella and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) agents are asymptomatic in healthy adults, vertical transmission during pregnancy may result in fetal morbidity and mortality. Currently, there is no clear consensus on routine screening for these infectious agents during pregnancy. In our study, it was aimed to determine the seroprevalence status of toxoplasma gondii, rubella and cytomegalovirus infections throughout the country during pregnancy and to compare them with the data of other countries. Material and Method: The study was planned as a multicenter, retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study. The number of pregnant women who applied to the secondary level state hospital, tertiary education research hospital and university hospitals that year between 2011-19, the number of pregnant women who were tested for toxoplasma, rubella and cytomegalovirus that year, IgM and IgG results, and toxoplasma and cytomegalovirus if available. avidity test results were recorded. Ages of patients who were Rubella IgG negative were included. Results: In this study, in which a total of 15 centers from secondary and tertiary health institutions in ten different provinces of Turkey participated, as a result of the data obtained from a total of 354526 people who applied to these centers and had pregnancy; anti toxoplasma IgG seropositivity was 21%, anti rubella IgG seropositivity was 96.5%, anti CMV IgG seropositivity was 56.2%. In our study, the ages of anti rubella Ig G negative pregnant women were evaluated. The mean age of 2024 Rubella IgG negative pregnant women was 30.6 years (18-54). When examined according to age ranges, it was seen that seronegativity was mostly in the 30-39 age range. Conclusion: Having information about the frequency and prevalence of toxoplasma, rubella and cytomegalovirus infections in pregnant women plays a critical role in determining the burden of disease, planning screening programs and active use of primary health care services. It is important to detect seronegative individuals and vaccinate before pregnancy for rubella infection, in which immunity can be achieved by vaccination.
Deep Learning Based Social Bot Detection on Twitter
While social bots can be used for various good causes, they can also be utilized to manipulate people and spread malware. Therefore, it is crucial to detect bots running on social media platforms. However, social bots are increasingly successful in creating human-like messages with the recent developments in artificial intelligence. Thus, we need more sophisticated solutions to detect them. In this study, we propose a novel deep learning architecture in which three long short-term memory (LSTM) models and a fully connected layer are utilized to capture complex social media activity of humans and bots. Since our architecture involves many components connected at different levels, we explore three learning schemes to train each component effectively. In our extensive experiments, we analyze the impact of each component of our architecture on classification accuracy using four different datasets. Furthermore, we show that our proposed architecture outperforms all baselines used in our experiments.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK); ARDEB 3501 [120E514]This work was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), ARDEB 3501, under Grant 120E514. Investigating the Modification of Jansen's Industrial Zone in Ankara, Turkiye, Through Fringe-Belt Analyses
30th International Seminar on Urban Form Conference (ISUF) -- SEP 04-09, 2023 -- Univ Belgrade, Fac Architecture, Belgrade, SERBIAThe manufacturing and infrastructural areas that emerged during the industrial period and became part of the urban landscape have directly influenced planning criteria regarding their location, magnitude, and relations with transportation. Due to their adverse effects on the city, such as pollution and noise, these areas, which were generally planned on the urban fringe, were sometimes surrounded by green spaces in order to isolate them physically. Because of changing social conditions and urban developments, many industrial areas are now emerging as problem areas in the urban landscape. They cannot retain their original function but have remained part of the city and turned into abandoned areas or urban voids. In light of these, this paper focuses on the former industrial zone of Ankara, which Herman Jansen (1932) planned in line with the Garden City principles. The industrial zone was located along the railway line and in the western part of the city, where it was thought that it would not negatively affect the city, and it was isolated by green spaces. This paper utilises the fringe-belt theory to show the evolution and modification of the industrial zone by using aerial photos, orthophotos, and maps at ten-year intervals. So, it investigates the changes in the identity of this zone. This paper briefly tries to reveal the approaches to the abandoned industrial sites and green spaces surrounding them. In addition, this paper will contribute to the limited studies on fringe-belt analysis in Turkish cities.MorphoLab Res Unit,Serbian Network Urban Morpho
Flexible Metal/Semiconductor Type Photodetectors Based on Manganese Doped Zno Nanorods
High-performance flexible photodetectors are one of the most interesting research areas due to their great possibilities for a variety of applications such as portable and wearable optoelectronics. This study verifies the performance of flexible metal/semiconductor/metal-type photodetector based on pristine and manganese doped ZnO nanorods (ZnO-NRs) prepared in two different concentrations of zinc precursors and manganese dopant at low temperatures. The photodetectors having ZnO-NRs with high aspect ratios were investigated by various material characterization techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance and photoluminescence spectroscopy to confirm the relationship between defect concentrations and photodetector performance parameters. It has been calculated that the detectivity (D*) and responsivity (R) of the ZnO nanorod-based photodetectors increased 20 and 18 folds, respectively by increasing the concentration of zinc precursor. Besides the D* and R values of the photodetectors, prepared by the 16.5 mM zinc precursor, increased 18 and 4.5-fold, respectively, after manganese doping. We confirmed that even a very low concentration of zinc precursor could produce a photodetector with high performance in photo-response characteristics, flexibility, and stability against 10,000 cycles of convex/concave bending.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V.
The thyroid nodule risk stratification guidelines used in the literature are based on certain well-known sonographic features of nodules and are still subjective since the application of these characteristics strictly depends on the reading physician. These guidelines classify nodules according to the sub-features of limited sonographic signs. This study aims to overcome these limitations by examining the relationships of a wide range of ultrasound signs in the differential diagnosis of nodules by using artificial intelligence methods. An innovative method based on training Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) by using Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to differentiate malignant from benign thyroid nodules. The comparison of the results from the proposed method to the results from the commonly used derivative-based algorithms and Deep Neural Network (DNN) methods yielded that the proposed method is more successful in differentiating malignant from benign thyroid nodules. Furthermore, a novel computer aided diagnosis (CAD) based risk stratification system for the thyroid nodule's ultrasound classification that is not present in the literature is proposed.
