    Beyond the Four Walls: Understanding the Impact of Inter-Industrial Learning Experiences

    The traditional learning environment for pre-service teachers most commonly reflects the banking concept, coined by Paulo Freire. The instructor teaches in the classroom and students are expected to learn, applying concepts during lesson planning and certification exams as proof of their learning (Freire, 1996). If authentic learning is occurring and skills are transferable, students should be able to identify educational concepts in other industries as validation that these practices are relevant. In this article, we propose a fresh, engaging approach to teaching pre-service teachers: inter-industrial learning experiences.     Fostering Motivation for Reading Primary Documents in History

    One issue that many middle-level social studies teachers face is motivating their students to read primary documents. Primary documents are great tools that allow teachers to show their students differing perspectives on a topic that they are teaching and can come in the form of speeches, newspapers, letters, books, academic works, and legal documents. Social studies teachers must figure out how to effectively inspire both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation to read in their students to most effectively use primary sources in the classroom. In order to foster motivation to read primary documents, social studies teachers can use strategies like Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI), historical reasoning, designing Document Based lessons (DBL), and designing Inquiry Design Model (IDM) lessons

    Religiosity, Patience, and Mental Well-Being among NCAA Athletes in the United States at State, Secular Private, and Faith-Based Colleges and Universities

    Patience has been defined as remaining calm in the face of frustration, suffering, or adversity for the sake of something beyond the self. This study examines patience, an understudied virtue in the world of collegiate athletics. Drawing from a sample of 415 student-athletes across the United States, we assess patience as a mediating mechanism between religiosity/spirituality and well-being. Regression results suggest that of the three subscales of patience considered, only greater hardships patience was associated with lower depression, anxiety, and loneliness. We also observed that greater intrinsic religiosity and a secure attachment to God predicted greater patience, yet more frequent religious attendance did not. Our results suggest that the more relational and internally motivated aspects of religiosity, rather than religious behavior, are more connected to cultivating patience for student athletes. We discuss the implications of our results and put forward several directions for future research

    BE-63 Impacts of upregulating miR-718 on neural activity

    Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a category of neurodevelopmental disorders that possess a range of symptoms, some of the more hallmark traits involving social delays and strict, repetitive interests and behaviors. There’s no known cause at this time; however, some hypothesize that altered levels of amino acids (e.g. glutamate) and epigenetics could play a major part. Epigenetic factors encompass mechanisms that can alter gene expression without altering gene sequences. These factors include DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA, namely microRNAs (miRNA). MiRNAs repress gene expression by binding to mRNA to cause degradation of the mRNA, preventing expression of the protein. Specifically, miR-718 has been known to alter the autophagy pathway through targeting phosphatase and tensin Homolog (PTEN) mRNA for degradation. PTEN alterations have not only been implicated in ASD, but in some types of cancers as well. PTEN dysregulation can prevent proper transport of glutamine into transport vesicles in neurons by solute carrier proteins (SLC proteins) in a process known as glutaminolysis. Deficits in glutaminolysis could be due to the SLC protein SLC6A20 as it is a suspected target of miR-718. Further, SLC6A20 regulates homeostasis of glycine and proline. Imbalances of glycine can disrupt the proper functioning of a major glutamate receptor known as the NMDA receptor (NMDAR), which is also seen in patients with ASD. This may implicate miR-718 not only in glutamate and SLC6A20 dysregulation, but also improper glycine and NMDAR functioning. Therefore, we sought to explore the effects of upregulating miR-718 on SLC6A20 expression and NMDAR functioning. We hypothesized that an upregulation of miR-718 will lead to a decrease in SLC6A20 and therefore a loss in glutamate signaling. We tested our hypothesis through RT-qPCR and multielectrode array studies. Completed work shows miR-718 does target SLC6A20 mRNA for degradation, and miR-718 upregulation disrupts membrane activity and voltage

    CB-36 An Analysis on Generative AI’s Ability to Maximize Supply Chain Outcomes, Disaster Avoidance and its Environmental Outlook.

    Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is transforming the transportation of goods within supply chains by optimizing shipping logistics, customer demand predictions, and improving overall efficiency. This study explores how Gen AI enhances profitability by streamlining transportation networks which use enhanced data and metrics to foster real-time decision making to adapt to changing transportation conditions. Adoption trends are analyzed, and simultaneously suggest a strong link between Gen AI implementation in transportation ease and financial growth. Companies that opt to utilize Gen AI face fewer inefficiencies compared to those who do not. In addition, companies that enroll in Gen AI in supply chain management are able to predict demand changes and fluctuations, and preemptively ship goods according to predicted consumer behavior changes. Furthermore, the paper examines disparities in access to Gen AI-powered logistics, highlighting how early adopters gain a multitude of competitive advantages while others face transport inefficiencies like congestion and weather complications. The role of Gen AI in disaster avoidance is analyzed, focusing on its ability to predict traffic patterns, predict demand, mitigate road disruptions, and dynamically reroute shipments in real-time. Environmental impacts are also considered, assessing whether AI-driven logistics contribute to a reduced carbon footprint through smarter routing, fuel efficiency, and resource optimization. Lastly, the influence of proprietary supply chain focused Gen AI like Logility, SAP and Oracle is discussed, and their enhancements and offerings are analyzed for market effectiveness. By focusing on the transportation aspect as well as the predictive nature of Gen AI, this paper highlights Gen AI’s ability to revolutionize efficiency in the realm of supply chain transportation management

    HS-43 Treatment of Shoulder Adhesive Capsulitis with Large Volume Hydrodilatation

    INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) commonly known as “frozen shoulder”, is characterized by fibrosis and contracture of the glenohumeral joint capsule, leading to progressive stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion (ROM) in multiple planes which is used to confirm diagnosis. Injections, physical therapy, and hydrodilatation are commonly used treatments, but no consensus exists regarding the most effective approach. This study aimed to assess patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and ROM for patients undergoing our novel large-volume hydrodilatation protocol. METHODS: Seventy-one patients diagnosed with AC or postoperative stiffness underwent a novel ultrasound-guided large-volume glenohumeral joint hydrodilatation protocol, which included an ultrasound-guided suprascapular nerve block at the suprascapular notch of the scapula prior to the procedure. The hydrodilatation included 9cc 1% lidocaine and 1cc triamcinolone, followed by the injection of up to 110cc sterile saline. Immediately post-procedure, patients performed two sets of 10 forward wall crawls and held a 1-minute external rotation doorway stretch for two repetitions in the clinic, with outpatient physical therapy was prescribed as well. ROM was measured immediately pre-procedure, post-procedure, and at the final clinic follow-up. PROMs were assessed 6+ months following hydrodilatation using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain, the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), and the Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE). Any further treatments that patients required were also recorded. RESULTS: Of the 71 patients, 47 were female and 24 were male. Average pre-procedure forward flexion was 107°, which increased to 156° immediately post-procedure (p CONCLUSION: Our novel ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation procedure for AC and post-operative stiffness resulted in significant improvements in ROM and satisfactory 6+ month PROMs. These findings suggest that it could be an effective lasting alternative or adjunct to traditional treatments

    HS-47 Primary leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava: a case series

    Leiomyosarcomas of the IVC are the most common primary malignancy of the IVC; however, these lesions are extremely rare, slow growing, present late and portend a poor prognosis. Our aim is to investigate the presentation, treatment, and outcomes and propose a new standardized anatomic and surgically relevant schematic based separation of lesions. Following IRB approval, a retrospective evaluation of all IVC leiomyosarcomas at a single institution was completed, with six identified diagnoses (2008-2021). A comprehensive literature review was also completed. The median age at diagnosis was 66.5 years (range 39-79); three patients were females and three were males (50%). Notable comorbidities were a history of smoking (33.33%), hypertension (66.67%), and hyperlipidemia (66.67%). All patients in our cohort were symptomatic. Histology from biopsy or resection revealed spindle cells arranged in fascicles, atypia, mitotic figures, and necrosis. When completed, vimentin, smooth muscle actin (SMA), and desmin IHC were positive. The mean tumor size was 8.38 cm (range 3.6-14.5). Tumor location was documented in relation to renal veins: half of the tumors arose inferior to the renal veins (n=3), half were at the level of the renal veins or directly involved the renal vein (n=3). Three lesions were FNCLCC grade 3 (high-grade; 50%), and three were FNCLCC grade 2 (intermediate grade; 50%). Neoadjuvant therapy was received by only one patient; all patients underwent resection. Surgical techniques were noted: complete resection with no reconstruction (33.3%; n=2), complete resection with reconstruction (16.67%; n=1), partial resections with patches (50%; n=3). All resections were R1. Additional organ resection was required in 66.67% of cases (n=4); no notable post-op complications or mortality occurred. Post-op treatment was received by one patient, including chemotherapy and radiation. Recurrences occurred in 50% of patients (n=3). The mean overall survival time for the entire cohort was 57.5 mo. post operation (range 12-179); for those that succumbed to their disease, mean survival was 36 mo. (range 12-72). To date, 50% of the cohort has survived (mean 79 mo.; range 27-129). Although vascular tumors prove to be surgically difficult, radical resection is still the standard of care, with malignancy-free five-year survival rates of approximately 31.4%. Due to the complexity of the surgical technique required, we propose a relevant designation of IVC to centralize the involvement of the renal veins, demarcating the three regions of above the renal veins, at the level of the renal veins, and below the renal veins
