Research Priorities for Drivers of Food Choice for Food System Transformation in South Asia: Proceedings of a Collaborative Workshop
Agrifood systems in South Asia are highly productive, but substantial challenges including poverty, climate change, and environmental degradation complicate progress toward achieving sustainable healthy diets for all. The dynamics of food systems and the consequence of their rapid transformation for food choice behaviors that contribute to healthy and unhealthy diets are not well understood. Food choice is defined as a decision-making process through which individuals and households consider, acquire, prepare, distribute, and consume foods and beverages. Understanding drivers of food choice (DFC) is important for achieving sustainable healthy diets, but evidence is lacking. This article outlines collectively derived priorities for future research on DFC in South Asia. A collaborative workshop was convened in March 2023 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with experts from the region. The workshop emphasized the application of a science of food choice framework to guide identification of priorities for research on DFC in South Asia. Priorities were derived through an interdisciplinary collaborative process to clarify what is known and not known about DFC in the context of Food Systems Transformation in the region with emphasis on a continuum of food choice behaviors (production, acquisition, preparation, distribution, and consumption). Workshop participants identified the following 3 main priorities for future research on DFC that address knowledge gaps that emerged from discussions: 1) intrahousehold dynamics and behaviors, 2) adolescent food choice, and 3) market and food acquisition linkages. Specific research needs to emphasize the importance of multigenerational data, food allocation, perceptions on food safety, adolescent food choice behaviors, and the need for longitudinal data on linkages between market availability and food choice behaviors. Building a body of evidence on DFC and tools for monitoring and assessing food choice behaviors is essential for designing effective policies and programs that allow all individuals to have healthy and sustainable diets in South Asia
Exploring the Public Health Agency of Canada’S and the Ontario Government’s Vaccine-Related Crisis Communication on X During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Crisis communication strategies must be tailored to the unique nature of social media. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, public health agencies have widely used social media to address vaccine hesitancy and misinformation. This research utilized the social media pandemic communication model to describe the key themes disseminated through the Ontario government and the Public Health Agency of Canada’s vaccine-related crisis communication on X (formerly Twitter). Between 27 January 2020 and 6 April 2021, 1271 posts related to COVID-19 vaccination were collected from three official government X accounts——two from the province of Ontario and one from Canada. Posts were analyzed and coded according to their message characteristics, main themes, and sub-themes. Both levels of government expressed similar themes of vaccine safety, benefits of vaccination, and addressed vaccine hesitancy; however, differed in terms of their messaging strategies used
Ideological Influences on Skills and Knowledge in Nonprofit Leadership
Understanding the skills and knowledge required for effective nonprofit leadership can be challenging. This position paper suggests that skills and knowledge come from both formal training programs at colleges, universities, professional associations, and consultant presentations but is also based on the personal lived experiences of leaders. While Ideology such as neoliberalism intentionally or unintentionally influence both formal training and lived experiences, common good ideology, an ideology that grounds the idea that nonprofits exist for the betterment of society, should guide leaders of the nonprofit sector and be an important consideration. Embracing common good ideology better centers equity appropriately for the common good; however, evidence suggests otherwise
Inclusive Leadership Ideology in Crisis Management: A Case Study Analysis on Serving the Homeless during Covid-19
A core value and ethical tenet of public administration is to ensure the protection and care of the most vulnerable in the community. This research shows that inclusive leadership ideology among public managers can actively engage them in using responsive strategies that respect marginalized groups\u27 diverse cultures, languages, identities, and special needs. Using interviews of homeless-serving nonprofit leaders during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, our research demonstrates how leaders navigated critical decision-making in response to the unique service needs of those who were unsheltered and experiencing homelessness. The D-A-I-C model (Shi et al., 2020) serves as a framework to demonstrate how inclusive leadership ideology relates to actions taken during a time of high crisis. Findings show that inclusive leadership ideology removes barriers for vulnerable groups to access information, services, and timely healthcare
CB-32 The Reality of Earning Revenue as an Influencer
Instagram and YouTube are popular platforms where people create content to earn revenue. Many believe that becoming an influencer is an easy way to make a living through ads, sponsorships, and brand deals. However, in reality, most content creators struggle to earn a stable income. This study looks at the challenges of making revenue on Instagram and YouTube, average earnings of influencers, and how expectations differ from reality.
This study explores: What are the challenges of generating revenue on Instagram and YouTube, and how will you gather this data? Research suggests that only a small percentage of content creators make enough revenue to support themselves. Success depends on engagement, content quality, platform algorithms, and brand partnerships.
Why is this research important?
1) It counters popular beliefs about influencers and their earning potential.
It provides a realistic view of how difficult it is to make a full-time living on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, helping to correct misconceptions about influencer success.
2) It explains the strategies needed for success and the duration to achieve it.
Success as an influencer doesn’t happen overnight. This research highlights the key factors such as audience engagement, high-quality content, consistency, and understanding platform algorithms. It also emphasizes that building a strong online presence takes time, effort, and adaptability, helping aspiring influencers set realistic expectations.
3 ) It also explores the reasons why some influencers thrive while others struggle.
Not all influencers achieve financial success, and this study examines the reasons behind that. By understanding these differences, content creators can learn what works, what doesn’t, and how they can improve their chances of success in a competitive digital landscape
CB-27 Speech Enhancement with A Novel Deep-learning-based Model
Speech enhancement is a crucial aspect of audio signal processing, aimed at improving speech quality and intelligibility in noisy environments. Deep learning-based speech enhancement models have shown strong performance in noise reduction tasks. In this study, we extend DeepFilterNet, a speech enhancement model, by integrating AI-driven techniques to further refine speech quality. Our goal is to enhance noise suppression, improve speech clarity, and boost overall performance compared to the baseline model. The significance of this research lies in its contribution to speech enhancement, a crucial aspect of audio signal processing that impacts applications in telecommunications, hearing aids, voice assistants, and human-computer interaction. By refining DeepFilterNet with AI-driven techniques, this study aims to improve noise suppression and speech clarity, making speech more intelligible in challenging environments
