    Ideological Influences on Nonprofit Leadership

    This position paper begins by briefly examining the nature of ideology from Antoine Destutt de Tracy in 1796 to postmodern and hermeneutic approaches, such as Ricoer. The influence of ideology on individuals, organizations, and society is discussed using the thoughts of Karl Marx, Max Weber, and George Herbert Mead. Ideological Influences on nonprofit organizations and their leadership are then examined for these three areas: 1. inclusion considerations, 2. programming, and 3. collaboration. Ideology is shown to consciously or unconsciously influence nonprofit organizations and Mindful leadership is suggested for dealing with its influence. The characteristics of mindful leadership discussed are compassion, self-awareness, equanimity, reflection, focus, deep listening, nonjudgement, and ego regulation. These characteristics are applied to the aforementioned areas of inclusion, programing, and collaboration to illustrate how mindful leaders can create positive and outcomes for their nonprofit organization by fostering a deeper connection between leaders, followers, and the organizational mission

    Don’t Flip Out, Flip Your Class!

    There are many benefits to using a flipped learning method in a middle school classroom. Students are able to take control of their learning in their own time. This alleviates any time constraints on note taking as well as giving them the opportunity to review information. This is especially true in Social Studies classrooms where educators are teaching complex topics using multiple cross curricular standards. Teachers may be hesitant to try this method due to the workload that is required before the lesson begins and uncertainty of whether it is a good instructional model for their particular class. Flipping the classroom so that students are able to participate in hands on activities, and assignments that foster a higher level of learning are worth the effort. While there may be some concerns and disadvantages to implementing a flipped classroom, the benefits are far greater

    The American school system is plagued by violent attacks such as school shootings. Unfortunately, these events are incredibly difficult to predict. The security used for these schools is often found lacking and students aren’t getting the help needed. Part of the issue is the internal struggle of students in tough situations and teachers not being trained properly to help them. School security is more than just something at the gate. It’s about creating a safe environment that students can find sanctuary in. The solution is to provide better training for teachers and updating the physical security of the school

    Introduction: Mental health is now a crucial part of leading a fulfilling life. People without proper mental health maintenance cannot live well. It\u27s not just adults who face this issue; nowadays, these cases are also visible in young people, especially those using social media or visiting specific types of online content. There is a high chance that we can identify this behavior early and prevent them from accessing harmful content or help them get the necessary support from adults. Research question: Is it possible to find the early stage of mental health, especially depression or anxiety, in children or young people based on the social media content they are watching or the type of content they are visiting? Methods: Developing a model that helps to flag the type of content they are watching or visiting and flag them of different levels of affect it has on the people or what way it is affecting them and then based on the data, we will train the model for predicting and also protection model Biggest question: The data privacy. No one wants to share the type of content they are visiting or watching, even if we track them How much concern is it that some one is seeing what you are going through? So we have to go through a vigorous process so that data is protected and not used against certain individuals Basically, it’s a kids YouTube how can parents see what type of content the kids are watching?     Making Movies is History in Our World Films in our world history have impacted storytelling, and economic impacts, and have driven our world to learn our world with visual lessons. I am a person who lives in South Carolina and I made a movie with no budget and just an idea in my head. I have created a movie called “Ruby” and have been working on the film the last year of my life. Professor Peter Caster has been a professor of mine many times teaching me film history and film lessons. This current spring 2025 semester I am taking his Horror film Genre class. This genre is my personal favorite in film and I have directed, produced, and written a short film with no budget. I have taken lessons from film class about how our world around us really does effect on how movies and stories are made. Movies are always relating to the economy around the release of the films. This creative project goes into the field of filmmaking and storytelling making the movie important for showing characters, dialogue, and style of which in 2025 is ways the film is conveying lessons of what is going on in our world. I created the idea in April 2024, while I knew I would submit this film into the symposium because of professor Caster’s advice on doing so. Him and I have been planning for me to finish the film in 2025 and I would take his class of horror class in which my film is a horror film. I have gathered talented people from the Greenville area with no payments at all because all have the passion of storytelling. Making this movie scary and creating caring characters about a message of growth is important portion. Making the film create the ways of a person having to learn a new area and new people is in this story. Making the scary portion creates the entertainment for audiences in today’s climate that box office revenue the past five years includes horror films. The film is completed and for the past year and a half is ready to present this creative project to the symposium that will create the importance of storytelling and even admiring the films creation of people with just a passion, I am very proud of my movie and I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy it and be a little scared

    BE-65 The Effects of Atorvastatin on Viability and Mitochondrial Activity on Human Colorectal Cancer Cells

    Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common cancer worldwide, affecting both men and women. While undergoing cancer treatments, many patients take medications at the same time for a variety of reasons. Statins, which can be included with the type of medications that are taken during chemotherapy, are a specific type of drug prescribed to patients with abnormal lipid or cholesterol levels. In this study, Atorvastatin (Lipitor), a specific type of statin prescribed to patients with high vulnerability to heart attacks, strokes, and high cholesterol levels, is utilized and tested on one human colorectal cancer cell line, HCT116, which was isolated from a male patient suffering from colon cancer. The effects of exposure to low and high doses of Atorvastatin on cell viability were observed to determine if Atorvastatin could be a potential chemotherapeutic agent in cancer treatment. A negative control of DMSO (a solvent used as a cryoprotectant of cell cultures) and a positive control of Doxorubicin (a well known chemotherapeutic drug) were also introduced to the cell line, where cell growth was observed. The HCT116 cell line was divided into four different groups. The groups were treated for two weeks with different diluted concentrations of 10 µM of Atorvastatin, 40 µM of Atorvastatin, 40 nM of DMSO, or 40 nM of Doxorubicin (DOXO). After the conclusion of the two-week treatment period, a Trypan Blue Exclusion assay was performed to observe the number and ratio of dead cells to viable cells. Afterwards, the MTS assay was performed to observe the viability of each cell line, in which the HCT116 cell lines were individually plated in 96-well plates for a 48-hour incubation period, and then absorbance readings at 450 nm were measured on an ELISA plate reader at 30-minute intervals over a period of two hours

    Introduction/Background: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an autoimmune reaction causing chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. The cause is unknown, and treatments are limited. A deficiency in P-glycoprotein (pgp), a protein expressed in intestinal epithelial cells, is linked to human IBD. We used pgp-deficient Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) to investigate intestinal development without a p-glycoprotein molecule. Our laboratory has described several changes in intestinal function in pgp1-/- C. elegans. Here, we look to investigate the possible changes in gene expression leading to these changes. Hypothesis: We hypothesized pgp1-/- C. elegans would exhibit changes within genes used to control intestinal development, inhibiting effective development of the intestine. Methods: Control and pgp1-/- C. elegans were obtained from the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center at the University of Minnesota and cultured on Nematode Growth Medium. Age synchronization was done via bleaching of gravid adults to obtain embryos, which could grow to young adults. qRT-PCR was done using single worm RNA that was isolated and reverse transcribed into cDNA. Gene Expression was measured using TaqMan Gene Expression primer probe sets for skn1, elt2, end1, and end3. Results: Compared with controls, L1 aged pgp1-/- C. elegans had decreased expression of skn1 and increased expression of elt2 and end1. Adults showed increased expression of skn1. No changes were observed in L1 end3 or Adult elt2, end1, or end3. Conclusions: The changes in skn1 indicate changes in the early intestinal development program in C. elegans, reflected in downstream changes in elt2 and end1. These data suggest that pgp1-/- C. elegans have early changes in gene expression leading to previously described changes in the intestine

    Synthetic data has become a revolutionary solution in the artificial intelligence domain, solving data availability, privacy, and model development challenges. The research focuses on the fundamentals of synthetic data within the context of generative AI. It analyzes its role in data privacy and model development. The study focuses on comparative analysis, which examines three primary categories of synthetic data: fully synthetic, partially synthetic and hybrid synthetic datasets, each serving unique purposes in AI development. The work depicts actual applications of synthetic data, mainly focusing on healthcare, where it is most important to keep patient records secure while ensuring confidentiality. Employing cutting-edge generative AI techniques, the research proposes approaches to generating high-fidelity synthetic datasets that retain statistical characteristics and mask sensitive information. The study addresses the technical aspects of data generation and the broader context for AI development, encompassing significant benefits and drawbacks like scalability and privacy preservation, data quality and representativeness maintenance challenges. This systematic review provides knowledge on current approaches, limitations, and future research avenues into synthetic data creation, augmenting the growing corpus of knowledge on generative AI applications. Findings suggest synthetic data as an exciting endeavour for powering AI innovation in addressing critical data confidentiality and availability matters, particularly in highly sensitive domains like healthcare
