Successful Subject Headings for Moving Image Resources

Life in Greece after the Financial Crisis: A Quality-of-Life Perspective
No full textAfter World War II, Greece faced economic struggles which led to its EU accession in 1981. In the following years, the use of credit increased and so did consumer debt. The global financial crisis of 2008 exposed Greece’s weak economy and caused the debt crisis. This led to multiple EU-IMF (International Monetary Fund) bailouts. This study examines how the crisis affected Greek citizens’ quality of life. This study specifically focuses on mental, physical, and socioeconomic health. Overall, mental and socioeconomic health worsened while physical health remained unchanged. All mental health indicators deteriorated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. Socioeconomic health showed increased unemployment, underemployment, and poverty. However, physical health stayed the same, with stable obesity rates and similar levels of substance use. This study has some limitations, including differences in data collection, a short time frame, and no regional analysis. Future research should study the long-term effects of this and compare urban and rural areas. These findings can help policymakers create better support strategies during economic crises
A Score for the Outdoors: A Study of Hayao Miyazaki\u27s Environmentalism and Joe Hisaishi\u27s Score in Princess Mononoke
Get PDFThis honors thesis explores the role of composer Joe Hisaishi’s score in relation to director Hayao Miyazaki’s environmental perspective in Princess Mononoke (1997). Miyazaki’s belief that, regardless of the target audience, a story cannot be told without presenting “the ecological issues”[1] leads to the production of films that have rhetoric in support of environmental appreciation and conservation embedded throughout. When read through an environmentalist lens, Princess Mononoke becomes a critique of “human-centric” thinking, instead supporting an ideology similar to “deep ecology,” which considers humans to be intrinsically linked to nature. Despite Hisaishi and Miyazaki’s close collaboration that leads to a diffusion of ideas between animation and music, there is little scholarly material studying how the soundtracks of Studio Ghibli movies play a role in communicating the director’s intentions to the viewer. Distribution rights for Studio Ghibli films have also increased in the Western world, allowing more people to find it through streaming services or theatrical re-release. Since many are already accustomed to the Princess Mononoke, they will be able to find greater appreciation for the subject.

Examining Racial Disparities in Cancer Incidence and Mortality Across South Carolina Regions
No full textPurpose: To provide updated cancer mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) data across South Carolina (SC).
Methods: State and national incidence and mortality data were collected from the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR) and the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER). MIRs (mortality rate/incidence rate) were calculated for all cancer sites, cervical, colon, female breast, lung and bronchus, oral cancers, and prostate cancers from the years 2016-2021, excluding 2020.
Results: Major racial disparities in MIR were found in SC, with the largest discrepancies seen in cervical, colon, and prostate cancers. Of note, each SC region had white cervical cancer MIRs lower than the SEER average, yet black women in the Pee Dee region saw a 99.8% increase.
Conclusions: These results highlight the poor cancer outcomes and disparities in SC. This research allows public health interventions to be targeted to the regions of our state which need them most
